Fandom: The Vampire Diaries Pairing: Stefan/Bonnie Length: 2300 Author on LJ: hazyflightsAuthor Website fanfic tagWhy this must be read: This is not a ship I would ever seek out, nor one that I'd ever really considered in all seriousness, but this story is brilliant enough to make me think that this might a massive oversight on my part. I read it because I was so starved for Bonnie-fic that I would read anything and this story delivers. It's almost eerie the way Bonnie & Stefan seem to be pulled together, years after Elena has moved on to her human life. It connects them as two supernatural beings, two people who can't move on or escape the darkness of the world around them. Beautiful, almost lyrical writing. An Excerpt: Bonnie thinks good evil, black white, but knows it doesn't work like that. Wishes it really could be that simple. That clean. This is you and this is me and I am right and you are wrong and that is that.

Fandom: Merlin Pairing: Arthur Pendragon/Merlin Emrys Length: 63,850 words Author on LJ: venivincere Author Website: venivincere.comWhy this must be read:Another 2010 Merlin Big Bang Challenge story, this is a tale of epic proportions about a love that is timeless and enduring. Due to the dramatic events of the story, this is not a lighthearted adventure, but rather a story of growth and the struggle to protect each other, their friends, and the people of Camelot. Note the warnings: Character death, not Merlin or Arthur. Spoilers through season two. Religious themes that might offend some people. On LJ: Light of ArthurOn DW: Light of Arthur

Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE Pairing: Napoleon/Illya Length: One-Shot Author on LJ: avery11Author Website: her livejournal. Also I think she is on ff.net? Why this must be read:This is rather short, but absolutely gorgeous. Over dinner, Napoleon finally admits to himself that he has feelings for Illya...but does Illya feel the same way? Another newer story, this one written for the MFU Easter Egg challenge. This is what you'd consider a "first time" fic in every way - both for Napoleon and Illya and also for the author! This is Avery's first slash offering, and she hit this one out of the park. Avery has a way of choosing just the right phrase - she makes this entire story feel rich and luxurious. If you'll indulge me a pun...read it and hunger for more. :) Dessert

Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Pairing: Steve/Danny Length: 78,000 Author on LJ: portraitofafool Author Website: portraitofafool's Master Fic List
Why this must be read:
I'm back from vacation with more recs! One of may favorite fanfic tropes is amnesia. I love it, and I will hunt it down in every fandom I'm in. Where the World Drops Off is probably my favorite amnesia story. Period. In any fandom. Steve lies in a coma for months following a near-fatal car accident. When he finally wakes up, he has no memory of himself or his past. He slowly puts together a new life with the help of his team - especially Danny - and a new friend, his physical therapist, Devion, who is one of the richest, most well-drawn original characters I've ever seen in a fan fic. In addition to dealing with the amnesia, this story does not gloss over the terrible physical injuries Steve receives in the accident, his recovery from them and their lingering effects.
portraitofafool is not tempted to go the easy route of producing a "miracle cure" and having everything back to the way it was by the end of the story as so many disability fics do. While there is a happy ending, nobody is the same, least of all, Steve.
This story is full of great details, such as the book club that Danny, Chin and Kono form while reading to Steve while he is in the coma and that continues throughout the story. I also love that Steve and Mary get to have the relationship they were never able to have before. It's just a wonderful story that will have you laughing and crying and wishing you'd written it.
Excerpt:
He was aware—and always was—that maybe there was more going on with his worries than just a casual fear because it /ate/ at him. He’d asked those same questions out loud a couple of times, but inside it was like a running loop of dialog in his head. It went everywhere with him, standing beside him while making a sandwich; peering over his shoulder while he was tying his shoes. It was there, soaping his wet back in the shower or looking out at him from the mirror as he brushed his teeth. That anxiety never went away, just like his fear of falling asleep. He didn’t know if he could stand that kind of grief again; mourning for something as intangible as memories was like grasping at nothing but air; insubstantial, but vital. Fear stemming from that kind of loss had the potential to be suffocating if not held at bay. That knowledge was even heavier when he had his friends—old and new—all gathered on his back lawn, grilling and talking; sharing drinks and laughs. He’d looked out at them all gathered there and sighed at the possibility that one day that, too, could be taken away from him.

Fandom: Naruto Pairing: None Length: 1,029 words Author on LJ: MoonsheenAuthor Website: Moonsheen on FF.NetWhy this must be read:Making a reader re-exam a character seems to be Moonsheen's specialty. With short vignettes - all written in 2003, Moonsheen gives depth to the ninja in Naruto's world that were rarely given more than a name & a talent in the first series. Shino in Break Out, Ibiki & Anko in Small Talk, and Neji in The Sun each develop in unexpected ways. But it is Fledgling that reveals a surprising Hyuuga Hinata with past, present, & future slice of life shorts exposing the woman she could be. Just wonderful! Moonsheen has moved on to other fandoms but the stories she has left behind are well-worth the read .. especially Fledgling. Enjoy!
