07:44 am Clothes Maketh the Man (NC-17), by nepthys_uk
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt
Length: 3,200 words
Author on LJ: nepthys_uk
Author Website: Nepthys_uk's Life on Mars fic list

Why this must be read:

My theme in reccing seems to be "people whose work I could happily rec all of", because once again that is the case! Nepthys_uk has been recced before and no doubt will be again. Everything she writes is pure gold and this is no exception. I pondered long and hard while deciding which fic to chose and in the end had to pic this as I've read nothing else like it. Sam has spent the day (or the night) undercover in drag, and it becomes clear that Gene appreciates some aspects of this. I adore the way in which Sam is so profoundly male in this despite the superficial trappings of femininity, right down to the "quit calling me a girl" attitude. Also, this fic is scorchingly hot.

Why this must be read:

Yes, I would happily recommend everything margo_kim has ever written. Why do you ask?
So, um, yeah, it's true; another Life on Mars author who can do no wrong. She has tackled the main pairing of this fandom (Sam/Gene) with outstanding results, as well as getting into some less-written but equally fascinating characters (Geoff/Vince) not to mention the guy everyone loves to hate, DCI Litton. But this particular fic is all Sam/Gene of the most amazing and heart-wrenching variety. Hurt/comfort is always a delicious combination of bitter and sweet, and this is an amazing example thereof. Sam's pretty profoundly messed up, here, physically, and we come to realize that his mental scars go quite deep as well. Gene, who has not been beaten up or tied to a pipe for thirty-two hours, is just as much a mess. I adore the tangled web of love here. It's beautifully written.

10:44 am L'appel du vide (NC-17), by petronelle
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Alex Drake/Annie Cartwright/Gene Hunt/Sam Tyler and sub-combinations thereof
Length: 16,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] petronelle
Author Website: petra's fic on dreamwidth
Why this must be read:
I knew, going into this, that I'd end up reccing petra more than once. The hard part of that is the choice of story to rec, because it's really really hard to choose between a whole bunch of amazing things, and many of them are interconnected so does one start at the beginning? Or just pick something and go with it? This one might seem like an odd place to begin, but I honestly couldn't resist the combination of curtainfic and double penetration. Yes, things get quite explicit here, but things are also extremely grounded in the domestic, which is a great part of petra's appeal to me; she maintains that sense of things happening in a real world in which things get messy and have to be cleaned up (whether that refers to emotional complications or physical locations!). This particular fic has no plot but advances the story of the committed relationship between Sam, Gene, Annie and Alex.

Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing: Bill/Byron
Length: 700 words

Why this must be read:

Watchmen fanfic, like its canon, is full of serious business and angst. This fic, though, is one of the most beautiful examples of adorable fluff, and who doesn't love fluff? Especially if it involves Bill and Byron, who are pretty much the fandom's go-to happy couple.

This one just makes me smile every time I read it.
