Fandom: SHERLOCK/ADDAMS FAMILY Pairing: John Watson and Sherlock Holmes are friends, but John's not blind Length: 11,100 words Author on LJ: etothepii Author Website: fic tag on LJ works on AO3 Why this must be read: Because Halloween is coming, and The Addams Family, in all its incarnations, is monstrous, creepy fun. This is one in a series, following Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc and followed by Your Body Before Me, but those are not necessary for enjoyment of this, my favorite. John is an Addams. He's Different. His body heals, when he allows it; he can see other things; and he's awfully damn tough to kill. He's also trying to pass as normal. He lives with consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, who's not aware of John's hidden talents. In this story, cousin/niece Wednesday comes to visit, with her possibly supernatural pet tarantula, Horatio. It's brilliant. True to both sources, it's a bit gory (even Gorey), alternately dark and light, funny, and touching in its relationships. John's advice to Wednesday on the fragility of those normal and the parameters of their tolerance for the different is amusing and sad. The humor ranges from cartoonish to subtly witty, and the whole story is a marvel of craftsmanship.

Fandom: WATCHMEN / SANDMAN Characters: Adrian, Death Length: ~1000 Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Author's fic on FFNWhy this must be read: This is part of the author's excellent "Death Through the Fandoms" series, and it's a smart, beautifully written little fic in which Death pays Adrian a visit after Dan and Laurie have left Karnak, and offers him a choice. Both of their voices are spot on, and it's funny as well as intriguing and affecting, Death in Antarctica

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: None Length: ~6K words Author on LJ: musesfoolAuthor Website: (or a link to where more of their fic is archived) Author on AO3Why this must be read: Please. Like you'd find out there's a fic in which Sirius Black falls through the veil and ends up on Serenity, and not read it? Seriously (or siriusly), though, this is a lovely fic with a fun premise. River's voice is so true, and, yes, I sort of really hope this was what happened to Padfoot post-OotP. Enjoy! I know I do every time I reread this. ( "Sirius Black, you're a long, long way from home," she says, uncurling the captain's fingers and smoothing Sirius's shirt, "but you're a good dog." )A Million Light Years From Home

Fandom: NCIS/CSI:NY Pairing: Gibbs/Tony, Mac/Danny Length: about 5,000 words Author on LJ: taylorgibbsAuthor Website: on AO3 Why this must be read: This story deals with a sensitive subject matter, namely 9/11, so please be aware of the potential triggers. The fic deals very respectfully with the subject matter, however. It spans over ten years, showing how all four men deal with their respective losses. It's heart-wrenching and healing at the same time, poignant and touching, which makes it a must read. It was posted shortly before 9/11 this year, and when I watched the memorial on TV, I could actually see the four characters standing in the middle of the crowd. That's how much this story moved me. Fandom: Doctor Who, Hitchhikker's Guide to the Galaxy Pairing: None Length: short Author on LJ: missbaxterAuthor Website: TeaspoonWhy this must be read:Donna is Awesome, and this fic shows why. The Vogons show up to announce the demolition of Earth. And Donna foils them by her office skills (bureaucracy being the Vogon weakness). It's awesome. It's epic. I would quote it, but I would just end up quoting the whole thing because it's awesome. Go read! All in a Day's Work
