Why this must be read:  How much do I love this story? Oh, let me count the ways. It's got it all - angst, romance, hurt/comfort, evil scientists, fast cars and hope. There's always hope. It's a first-time story that will rip your heart out but will also make it soar.

A tiny taste...

Napoleon cradled Illya’s head in his hands. He searched his partner’s face for signs that what he was about to do might be unwelcome but the eyes that looked back were clear, inviting. He shifted his gaze to the full mouth and watched as it quirked into the familiar, lopsided grin. Something throbbed inside Napoleon’s chest. Slowly, Illya licked his lips.

Released, Napoleon leaned in until he could feel the erratic puffs of Illya’s breath against his own lips. Slowly, he closed his eyes and kissed him.

It's an incredibly warm and welcoming fandom, but despite that I was a lurker here until earlier this year. Driving the crack van this month has felt writing a love letter to the fandom, a small token of thanks for all the wonderful fic you all have shared with me. Why this must be read: Because it's (almost) Halloween, and what more could you ask for than a beautiful, moody, gothic, romantic vampire story? It's a tense first-person narrative from Fraser's POV recounting how Ray was attacked and transformed, and Fraser's refusal to abandon Ray to suffer his fate alone. The mood of the piece is fabulous, with a richly detailed story-telling style at once reminiscent of the gothic horror masterpieces and completely believable as Benton Fraser's inner thoughts. It's the perfect thing to curl up with on a crisp fall evening.

I enjoy this fic partially because of the possibilities. I'm not typically into westerns, but this AU creates a Cas and Jimmy so different, yet, still recognizable. Just like any good AU, we see elements of the show in it (Dean stays to take care of Sam, John doing a job to protect others). But I love the complexity that is added when Jimmy and Cas aren't exactly the good guys, when Cas' angel-ness is transformed into human ruthlessness. I like that it's actually very alien to the 'verse we know; and the story recognizes that different situations make people different. The portrayal of Cas and Jimmy is unique and all the more fascinating for it. The story kept me (figuratively) biting my nails the first time I read it, trying to determine what would happen. And the end, well, that throws what you thought about the 'verse for a loop.

Why this must be read: Summary: Neal's actually pretty sure he noticed that right off, the things Andrew and David have in common.

When I went into this fic, I had no idea that it would become something that I read regularly on top of spending hours dissecting the myriad relationships. Technically, this fic is just about perfect when it comes to point of view, pacing, characterization, dealing with extremely difficult material in a sensitive way, and a conclusion that is incredibly satisfying. While Neal is the star (and an incredible star at that) of this fic, the Cook/Archuleta scenes are pure magic that begin in this recced fic and continue into an indeterminate future. Neal's internal and external dialogue brings to light the incredible difficulties that Cook and Archie face as an unconventional couple in the public eye. The following is just a taste but possibly my favorite scene; it gives a taste of the myriad and layered relationships within the fic.

Why this must be read:
Some time after she moved to America, Maria Jackson deals with mysterious temporal events and her mentor Sarah Jane's past.

Written for the [livejournal.com profile] girlsavesboy ficathon, this is a charming treat.  Maria, a character from the Sarah Jane Adventures, moved to America with her Dad mid-way through the show.  In this story, we see her still saving the world from alien invasions.  Although Four is there as well and provides assistance and instructions, Maria was the only one who could save the day.  And she does.  It's a well-written and interesting adventure with a dash of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimeyness.  It's also creepy enough in places for a story to post on Halloween.

Why this must be read: There are so many reasons to read this fic, but mostly I have to go with: Machiavellian!Archie. [livejournal.com profile] astolat takes this simple idea and runs with it to spin out one of the greatest character--driven stories in this fandom. As implausible as the idea is at first glance, she sells it with attention to persona and dialogue along with lovely details along the way that she pulls from "canon." This is a story that never gets old for me because it plays into so many of my personal longings for what I love in a good C/A story, and if you also like quirky first time fics with personality, this is the story to check out.

"Both?"

Why this must be read: Why? For me these two stories are perfect. I love first person POV, I love Katie Steuer’s style and I love that she sees the guys exactly as I see them. The first story takes place right after The Fix and this time it’s Starsky who needs Hutch’s help. In the second one – that takes over right after the first one we learn so much about Starsky’s past that for me it’s my personal canon. It’s the most incredible explanation why Starsky was sent to California when he was a kid.

Raise your hand if you love Yuletide! It's been a fanfic tradtion for, what, a decade now? Well, this story was written in 2009 for Yuletide and it's about a story being written in 2009 for Yuletide... yeah. Deadpool is in it. Thus, the 4th Wall is not only broken, but OBLITERATED and then scattered beyond the fringes of the nastiest corners of the internet.

Deadpool and Cable make their way through the Yuletide archive, visiting a (rather infamous) story from each year in search of a perfect Christmas. It is not only meta, it's nostalgic meta and the end is very touching. This is on my HIGHLY recommended list for anyone, even people who are not really fans of Cable and Deadpool.

Basically, Steve's chronic malaria flares up, and Danny takes care of him. [livejournal.com profile] ariadnes_string does a great job writing these two and is a wonderful hurt/comfort writer to boot. Steve and Danny's friendship really shines through here. It's such a happy reminder of what they're willing to do for one another.

Why this must be read: As every writer will tell you, there are stories out there that they wish they had written. This story here? Is one of maybe five fics on my "wish I had written it instead of that other author" list. The first time I read this epic, it totally blew me away. And it continues to make me green with envy whenever I read it (see "list" above). The epic is about Tony going undercover and ending up in sexual slavery. The main focus, however, is on his recovery and how the team as a family and especially Gibbs as protective papabear deals with the consequences of the op gone wrong. The story is incredibly well written, the team is in character, and you can't help but be sucked right into the plot. If you like long, well written fics, this will be right up your alley. If you like whumped Tony, this will be your new favorite story.
