02:49 am The Virtual Insanity Affair by Amethyst Hunter (PG-13)
I'm Periwinkle, and I will be your driver for November. I thought I'd start off with something light and humerous.

Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Solo/Kuryakin, with Waverly, Dancer and Slate as characters
Length: Approximately 3200 words
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] amethyst_hunter
Author Website:
As far as I know, her work is on either lyrebird or [livejournal.com profile] muncle

Why this must be read:
Back in the good old days of 1997, before AIM, there was (and still is) Usenet and Internet Relay Chat, which became popular when college students discovered chatting.

Imagine, if you will, that Mr. Waverly has decided that instead of having briefings in his office, he is going to have Virtual Briefings by Chat. As a result, Thrush is now trying to break into the chatroom and access UNCLE's secrets. Illya is assigned to create a virus to infect Thrush, and Napoleon is put in charge of the firewall.

Which is immediately breached by Angelique, leading to some heated words all around.

The entire "affair" is conducted in "chat-speak" and it's fun to read. While Angelique is trying to talk to Solo, side chats are going on, people are being kicked, and emoticons are substituting for words.

(Hi, TS folks! If you're into an intro thing, the motto for the month is "Expect…nothing." Or, to be somewhat clearer, "Expect anything," because I love the breadth and depth and extraordinary range of TS fic, old and new, and anything is fair game, AFAIC: slash, gen, vintage, newly born, kink, not kink, AU or not AU. It's going to be tough to ration myself to just a relatively few recs over the course of the month. :-))

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: gen
Length: ~18,500 words
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: (a geocities casualty as far as I can tell; the Wayback Machine link to the original website is here)
Why this must be read:

A totally delightful TS classic, entirely in the form of emails zinging back and forth between our guys and various supporting players. Great voices, some seriously (seriously) funny stuff, action, suspense, h/c, even (to paraphrase Blair) "a jump off the high dive feet first" into the spiritual/mystical water — the whole enchilada. Even if you never read gen you should try this; the snark alone is worth it.

Excerpt )

Courtesy of the geocities!fail, the presence of this fic on the web is now scarily tenuous. PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT YET, WHILE YOU STILL CAN. You'll have a *blast*. Which, okay, happens to be a pun, under the circumstances… :-)

01:25 pm Hutch Fever by Theresa Kyle (PG-13)
Hello! It's me again Nancys_soul driving the crackvan, buckle your seat belts and get ready for some of the best Starsky and Hutch stories in the fandom.

Fandom:STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing:starsky and hutch
Length:one-shot
Author on LJ:unknown
Author Website:http://www.starskyhutcharchive.net/viewstory.php?sid=378&chapter=1

Why this must be read:You just have to read this story, it's so good! Starsky is unsettled when his feelings for his partner suddenly become X-rated--but Hutch, currently involved with a fetching blonde, remains oblivious. The author is so funny. She has Starsky down to a tee.

At first I thought the wet dream was just from the power of suggestion. It'd been on my mind all day, after that snotty redhead had told me she didn't want to share me with Hutch. My dreams have always been a little on the crazy side. I once dreamed I was being eaten by a giant taco. Another time I could swear I dreamed I was Godzilla in 3D, although Hutch keeps insisting it's impossible to dream in 3D. Well, you get the idea. I was used to nutty dreams.

But most dreams you forget in a few hours. This dream I kept remembering.

And each time I remembered my dream, I came all over the place. With a little help from my hand, of course. Not just once or twice, either. Every single night--and every morning unless I was running late for work.

Weird, huh? It gets weirder.

I started Hutch-watching.

04:56 pm Can't Get Next to You by Yahtzee (Teen)
Fandom: FRINGE
Pairing: Olivia Dunham/Peter Bishop
Length: 13,709
Author on LJ: unknown, to me anyway [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/Yahtzee/
Why this must be read:
This exciting story is one of the first I read in this fandom, and it's still one of my favorites. Set between seasons two and three, with his Olivia still missing, Peter searches for her across multiple universes. Fringe is a series where multiple universes are canon; Yahtzee takes that element and just runs with it.

Hi my name is Kt and I'm your driver for Life on Mars! How fun. Lets get this show on the road then.

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairings: Sam/Maya
Length: 6441
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] loneraven
Author Website: AO3

Why this must be read:
Strangely enough [livejournal.com profile] loneraven seems to be in almost every fandom I've ever even heard of. Seriously. Go check out her AO3 page. You'll be surprised at how many are listed there. For you that are too lazy to look it up, she written in 43 different fandoms. Most predominantly in Dr Who. Loneraven is one of those forgotten fic writers. One fic in each fandom, each fic a little gem that has been unfortunately buried in the mountains of other little gems.

In this fic [livejournal.com profile] loneraven covers what would of happened if Sam had woken up and 1973 had been real. She has skillfully mixed 2006 and 1973 together creating one reality.  It's pretty darn good. Go check it out.

Excerpt:
It happened without preamble.

Above the low-level sound, Sam heard it. The slow, mournful bleeps of a hospital monitor, firstly as a counterpoint to the background noise, then above it, obliterating it, filling his ears and his head, not coma-thick edge-of-perception echoes but real and sharp and accompanied with a dozen other sounds, heartbeats, voices.

“Sam!”

Hi there! I'm [livejournal.com profile] bookaddict43 and I'm driving the Merlin van again. I hope to bring a selection of canon and AU fics for you to enjoy :D

Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Length" 4 744
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rotrude
Why this must be read: Told from an outsiders POV this is a great look at what Merlin and Arthur's relationship may look like. Set around the series 3 canon the story begins with a druid women finding an injured man on a battlefield. The author provides us with a realistic feeling as she describes the aftermath of battle and the druid woman's medieval healing. I love the description of Arthur and his devotion to Merlin in this lovely atmospheric story.

10:38 pm All Straight Lines Circle Sometimes by liketheroad (PG-13)
Fandom: Suits
Pairing: Mike/Harvey
Length: ~18k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] liketheroad
Author Website: her writing journal or her AO3 page.

Why this must be read: I have not read "The Time Traveler's Wife," so when I read the summary for this story and it said that it was an AU of it, it took me a while to get around to reading it. Guys, that is time that I did not have with this fic in my life that I will never get back, okay? Do not make the same mistake.

For one thing, [livejournal.com profile] liketheroad makes time truly a part of the story, like a third character, which is just awesome. But she also does what the best of all AUs do, which is to show us a different aspect of the characters while still having them be themselves, only in a different situation. It is even more impressive because she works so much of canon into this fic, that it's the underlying details and emotions that are the driving force for the AU, rather than, say, the worldbuilding.

All in all, this is just a tight fic, with emotional resonance and humor and hope.

10:57 pm Subtle Innuendos by salr323 / tukumbe (PG)
Hello. I am [livejournal.com profile] scienceofdeduct, bringing the asexy side to BBC's Sherlock for the month of November.

The BBC's take on Sherlock presents a main character who, in this modern day of over-sexualised media and commercialism, seems to have no interest sexually or even romantically in others. An asexual Sherlock is pretty much cannon even to the original stories. The Sherlock fandom has risen to the task of exploring the subject.

Fandom: SHERLOCK
Pairing: none
Length: less than 1500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] salr323 / [livejournal.com profile] tukumbe
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] tukumbe
Why this must be read:

At the end of "A Study in Pink," the case resolved, John and Sherlock seal their new-found partnership as they head towards a well-deserved dinner at a Chinese restaurant. This is the continuation of the Italian restaurant scene; it has the temper and tone of the original BBC pilot in defining what Sherlock doesn't do, and keeps the two men squarely in character that you almost think it must have been taken from the pages of unshot script.

Hi! I'll be here with Star Wars recs this month. I'll be reccing Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan stories mostly. :)

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi
Length: Medium
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

This is a lovely story where deep buried feelings and desires are surfacing, slowly but surely, step by fascinating step.

"Qui-Gon sat on the edge of his bunk, unable to forget the smell of Obi-Wan's skin, the feel of his hair against Qui-Gon's face, or the delightful shudders that his student's laughter had sent rippling through his body.

That beautiful laughter. How it had filled his heart, flowing into all of the nearly forgotten empty spaces, and forcing out years of cynicism and sadness. He needed to hear it again."
