07:16 pm The Shape of a Sooner State by Cherryice (G)
Hi! I'm[livejournal.com profile] wendelah1 and I'm driving the van for small fandoms, which this month is featuring the television series Fringe. I've been a fan of the show since summer 2010 when I mainlined two boxsets in ten days in preparation for season three. Since this is the first time Fringe has been featured on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van I'll be reccing as many stories as I can cram in during November. There will be a fandom overview, eventually. Never apologize, she reminded herself. Never explain.

On with the recs.

Fandom: FRINGE
Pairing: Olivia Dunham/Peter Bishop
Length: 2,595
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] cherryice
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/CherryIce
Why this must be read:
It was hard to choose which story to rec first, especially in a small fandom, where everyone has already read it all. So this is for the people who haven't read much Fringe fic, the readers who are just window-shopping a little while looking for the new recs for Sherlock BBC or H50. This story is a must-read, whether you ship the pairing or not, whether you've seen the series or not. This story blew me away.

This is one of those times where I regret the emphasis fandom places on pairings, because that's not what this story is about. This is about what it's like to be Olivia, trapped and brainwashed into believing she's her doppleganger. It's about what it's like to be at war with an enemy who looks just like you but who can't understand what makes you tick, not really. I especially love the way [livejournal.com profile] cherryice uses the structure of alternating POV, with Alt-Olivia's being left-justified and Our Olivia's being right, a clever device which also signals the differences in how their brains work, and perhaps even the difference between life here and life Over There.

08:10 pm Catch & Release by Roozette
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Harry/Snape
Length: ~5500 words
Author on lj: unknown
Author Website: On Insane Journal

Why This Must Be Read:

I love stories where Ron and Hermoine are accepting of Snape, especially Ron. Catch and Release is from Ron's POV and it is a wonderful story about different scenes of Harry and Severus's lives together that Ron happens to see. And in each one Ron realizes how good Severus is for Harry and how they have the same 'tell' when they are feeling insecure.

Hello! I'll be driving the Supernatural van for the month of November. I'm going to try to mix up the characters and pairings a bit, so hopefully you'll see something you like!

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: Dean/Cassie (Cassie-centric)
Length: ~15,000 words
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] edenbound/[dreamwidth.org profile] edenbound
Why this must be read:

I've seen Supernatural fans comment that Cassie Robinson was one of those characters where the viewers are told they're important or awesome or interesting, but never really shown why that's so. I . . . guess that's sort of true, isn't it? Well, [livejournal.com profile] edenbound has picked up the show's slack in this AU where Cassie decides to go on the road with Dean and John instead of breaking up with Dean. It is beautifully crafted and has a great plot, well developed characters, and leaves you begging for more.

Hello, I'm Kat and this month I get to drive the Capri Van for The Professionals. We'll have a wide variety of stories to read from some of my favourite authors. Enjoy and remember to be careful on those handbrake turns.

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 31,279 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] asymphototropic
Author Website: asymphototropic on The Automated Hatstand, asymphototropic on The Circuit Archive, asymphototropic on The (Original) Hatstand

Why this must be read: asymphototropic is an utterly fabulous writer. Her words flow from her keyboard in such a way that I want to cry at their melodic beauty. :) I wish I could write half a well as she does. It's simply gorgeous writing. But writing talent needs to translate into a great story, and this writer hits the mark again and again.

Stuck is wonderful. This case story is chalk full of action, intrigue, friendship and love. It's the perfect melding of a case story, canon lads and a beautiful relationship. I happen to adore her Bodie as well. *g*

You know you want to read this! )

09:24 pm my second choice (my best bet) by raphaela667 (R)
Hello! My name is Kita, and I'll be reccing Trek for the next month. I'm mostly familiar with AOS and its TOS influences. I have a weakness for short emotional gutpunches of fics, long intelligent fics, fics with Gaila being awesome, fics that explore the reality of different alien cultures, rarepairs, and non-cliche romatic arrangements. So! I will rec various things like that. Let's get started! :D

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT (AOS/2009)
Pairing: Uhura/McCoy (Kirk/Spock)
Length: 1524
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] raphaela667
Author Website: Her masterlist. She's also on Dreamwidth.

Why this must be read:
I really like fics about people who choose to settle down with someone who's not their One True; it has a reality to it, I think, acknowledging that there's a lot of relationships people choose to stay in and work at even if they're not really romances -- and that maybe there's something romantic about that, too.

This is a short, spare, economical story about Uhura and McCoy's life together. It tells so much about the characters, about their lives and feelings, with so few words; it never quite spells everything out. But you know that Spock was Uhura's first choice, and Kirk would have been McCoy's. It doesn't matter; Uhura and McCoy make a solid, loving life together anyway.

She likes having someone to sleep next to and so does Leonard. )
