Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Arthur/Merlin, Lancelot/Gwen Length: 87,000 + words Author on LJ: dreamdustmamaAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read: This epic duology is one of the measuring sticks for the quality of writing in this fandom in my humble opinion. With every character being well-rounded, world building that brings every scene and description to life, and an emotional depth that leaves residue on your very soul, these two stories kept me enthralled long after reading. Dreamdustmama brought Arthur, Merlin, Morgana, Morgeuse, and every other character so to life that I was literally living the events that were described. The world was so vivid that every grim detail of this world where magic users are persecuted and headed for eventual annihilation kept me on the edge of the seat, even when there was a smidge of light at the end. All the emotions were crisp enough that I felt my heart twitch at every betrayal and declaration of love. These two fics will leave you with an indelible mark on your heart and your mind just wanting more, more, more. Prequel: Worth Fighting For and original Echoes of Yesterday

Fandom: MEN'S PROFESSIONAL TENNIS RPS Pairing: David Ferrer/Rafael Nadal; past Rafael Nadal/Carlos Moya, implied David Ferrer/Tommy Robredo Length: ~ 3500 words Author on LJ: cuentosdelalma Author Website: cuentosdelalma Why this must be read: This fic, for lack of a better word, hurts. The author warns for mental illness and that should be considered as you head into this one. It takes place after Nadal got injured at the 2011 Australian Open and looked to be in tears as his chance for a calendar Slam (winning four majors in a row) was no longer possible, losing to Ferrer. In the story, Rafa is also dealing with a broken heart, having finally ended things with Carlos, and David just wants a way to make him feel better but that's easier said than done.
This fic is part of Volume 2 of netcord, an anthology that is formatted as if it's a book. As part of its format, there is no header but the author posted one on her site if you want: Header. In the same volume, this author also submitted Bitter Heart, surrounding the 2004 French Open final between Gaston Gaudio and Guillermo Coria. If read back to back, they pack a solid one-two punch.

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Luke Skywalker/Mara Jade Length: 70k Author on LJ: She doesn't have one Author Website: Her personal website Why This Must Be Read: As someone who has had a relative who has suffered from a form of amnesia, I'm quite critical of the memory loss trope. However, this is certainly a diamond in the rough and the first of two memory loss stories I'll be reccing this month. In this fic, Luke loses his memories due to a speeder accident. The story is about Mara trying to navigate her relationship with Luke through his memory loss, where nobody, not even Luke, knows they are engaged. A great read! ( Excerpt )

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Pairing: none Characters: Ezra, Maude, JD, Buck, OCs Length: 5,523 words Author on LJ: rhymer23Author's website: http://www.rhymer.org.uk/Why this must be read: Because it's lovely backstory, the characterization of the younger Ezra is delightful and resonant, aaaand it features one of the series' great non-human characters! All of the Seven are characterized in part by the guns they carry. Some carry more than one, or use different types of armoury for different situations. Ezra, the "cheater", produces his hidden "pop-gun" in the blink of an eye. But, as this little gem of a story shows, it's a skill, like much of his persona, which is hard won. "A gun is like a crutch," his mother said. "You should rely on your wits, my darling boy. I raised you better than that, surely. Rely on yourself - on nothing and on nobody else."If At First You Don't Succeed

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 284k Author on LJ: http://charlotte-frost.livejournal.com/Author Website: Charlotte's storiesWhy this must be read: This is the latest in the "Adventure" series, which I really love. Some readers may not have gone for the original story (entitled "Adventure") simply because it dealt with alien abduction, but I encourage you to read each in the series because of the wonderful life Charlotte Frost has created for our boys. In "The Female Factor", Starsky and Hutch help out Joan Meredith's niece by letting her stay with them. (This deals with some feminine issues of the time--the story does not have female characters horning in on S and H.) There is also an interesting case that the guys take on in their private detective agency. I so recommend this to you if you like to read stories where the boys are in a loving, committed relationship and dealing with everyday stuff. The Female Factor

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Character: Benton Fraser Length: 1000 words Author on LJ: nos4a2no9Author Website: Fic LJWhy this must be read: This is a bit of young Fraser gen, and it's wistful and a little sad, but also full of thwarted teenage sensuality. I especially like all the details of the library; they make the story feel very real. Deserted
