Pairing: Nate Fick/Brad Colbert/Ray Person
Length: 6000

Why this must be read:

Another thing that the Generation Kill fandom does very well is incredibly good porn.

This is a prime example of it - not only is it scorchingly hot, it's got characterisation and humour and snark and a fantastic Ray voice. From one of the heartwrenching moments in the mini - Ray losing it at Rudy during Bomb in the Garden - we get an amazing build and burst of tension. Between an unexpectedly insecure and typically mouthy Ray, toppy BAMF Nate, and possessive, competent (and secretly a total marshmallow) Brad, this fic is one of the best-characterised and best-voiced I've seen.

Be warned: put down anything you're holding, and stay away from combustible materials. You may explode from the sheer hotness of this fic.

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (X-Men: First Class)
Pairing: Erik/Charles
Length: 5k

Why this must be read:

I will read anything that seperis writes. She uses subtle dark undertones, honest character development, and a lovely gift for language to set her work apart. This story is AU, but only in that there was a different outcome at the beach. What I love most about seperis' work is that she will often leave many things unsaid in a story, leaving the reader to interpret what actually happened how they will. I also love when people explore how ridiculous Charles' powers are. I mean Eric is scary in a "I will hunt you down and torture you" kind of way, but Charles' mind, if he was anything less than he is, is truly terrifying. Seperis shows a Charles that is afraid of himself, and what will happen to the mutants and people he is trying to protect if he stops using Cerebro, as well as a wonderful protective Erik. Go and read, definitely one of the best in this fandom.

Why this must be read:

A transporter accident (it’s always a transporter accident) switches original series McCoy with reboot movie McCoy with all the differences in appearance that implies to us.  Kirk and Spock insist the new McCoy is an impostor and don’t trust him until Spock Prime backs up his story.  Despite being set in the reboot verse the story is mostly about the relationship between Spock and McCoy in the original series/time line.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: (Gen) Jim Ellison, Blair Sandburg
Length:Fairly short

Why this must be read:

Summary:AU. In a future world, Blair would do anything to save his family.

Litgal introduces us, in a few short words, to a harsh world ravaged by disease and populated with people desperate to emigrate to healthier space colonies. Blair's not willing to wait on the chance he and his adopted sisters can secure legal passage off planet.

We see many facets of Blair in this future sci-fi story, resourceful, daring, reckless, loving, protective and mouthy. The story is told from Blair's POV, so we see Jim through his eyes, and he's not somebody you'd want to mess with, only Blair doesn't stay meek, he speaks his mind.

Jim has the power in this story and a legal system that backs him up. He's a man in need, though, and in his own way just as desperate as Blair.

The story is gen, and ends at a point where it could go either way in a sequel. For myself, I think the circumstances would lead to a sexual relationship between them.

Why this must be read:

Every fandom has its OTPs and popular pairings; in the Generation Kill fandom, Nate/Brad is one of those. But every once in a while, you come across a fic that really makes you think about and deconstruct both the characters and the pairing. This is one of those fics.

This fic takes both Brad and Nate from very different narrative beginnings: Nate, entering OCS; Brad's first firefight in Somalia - and then tracking onwards through their careers. Seeing them develop as characters is an absolute delight. It's not until nearly three-quarters of the way in that any romantic involvement even happens - but it feels inevitable, and perfectly right in a way that few other fics achieve.

There's a strongly lyrical quality to this fic: the writing is both spare and detailed, as required, and combined with images and narrative interludes creates a beautifully rounded story. Both the character voices are strong and distinctly them, and the narrator voice is separate, direct, and excellently executed. It's one I've read over and over again, and am always finding new things about.
