It's the 15th - Crack Van Collision Day! From hereon in, we're going to be heading into AU territory. We're going to kick off with one of the best crossovers this fandom has - with Naomi Novik's Temeraire series.

A brief explanation of the Temeraire universe: the premise is that humanity has always co-existed with an intelligent species of dragons, who form strong bonds with individuals, their captains, and were an instrumental part of the British military during the Napoleonic Wars. There are some spoilers for Black Powder War, the third book in the series, in this fic. You don't have to know the universe - the fic is remarkably self-explanatory - but I'd be very surprised if you don't come out wanting to read the series.

The premise of this fic is that Brad and Ray grew up together as young aviators, aboard a dragon called Laetificat (yes, Temeraire fans should recognise her). Naturally, there is also a dragon - but I'm not going to spoil the surprise there! The characterisation of both the Generation Kill and Temeraire characters is fantastic: the GK boys are quite noticably themselves - despite being shoved into 19th Century Britain.The language is that of the 19th Century, but sufficiently well-handled to be easily accessible (a trait from the Temeraire series), but the voices still sound like the guys we know from Generation Kill. The entire ensemble is there, too; Nate, Rudy, Pappy, Poke, Walt, and the whole gang all make appearances of varying importance; Lawrence, Temeraire, Granby, Roland, and a whole host of other characters (both human and dragon) from the Temeraire universe are there too. They're all fantastically well-characterised, and everything is seamlessly integrated.

Another thing: the porn is fantastic. You may have already guessed this from my earlier novembersmith rec.

Also: I wanted a smaller excerpt, but further on would spoil things and this section really can't be broken up without taking away at least a little of its charm.

Why this must be read

Chicago is where Harry Dresden, Wizard, has his consulting business – no love potions or endless purses provided – but when Detective Blair Sandburg cons convinces his superiors to hire Harry to help solve a case that has elements of ritual magic, Harry agrees and travels to Cascade. By train instead of a jet because wizards and technology don't mix. He's surprised to find that the unlikely pair who he liaisons with are a sentinel and a shaman.

I like outsider POVs and Harry provides an interesting one as he observes Jim and Blair and their little in-jokes that he gets enough to know they're based on some interesting history between the two.

Subcircus has a deft hand with the plot and characterizations. There is some description of gore but no more so than shows like CSI or what you see down in Ducky's morgue from NCIS. I particularly liked how she fit Blair's powers as a shaman into the Dresden Files magical universe.

'Cause there aren't enough Gibbs/Tony snuggling fics out there. The gentle atmosphere and love evidenced in this fic just makes me smile. Gibbs even puts off the potty call just to snuggle with his man. I loved how hawk explored Gibbs' inner workings and musings about where he used to be and how he won't let Tony go now that he has him. I've got a grin on my face right now just remembering, and you will after reading! :D

Why this must be read: Face it, St. Crispins is a must read for any Man from U.N.C.L.E. fan. This one is no exception. The story takes place in Scotland, where Napoleon and Illya are protecting the sister of the creator of a new explosive. What more is there to say, an island off the coast of Scotland, an old manor house, and witchcraft. This story has it all. Enjoy.

Summary: Blair’s in love with the world, and Jim’s losing control.

Jim's been patient with Blair's indiscriminate spewing of pheromones, but this latest round proves to be too much for him to accept, and he strikes back. Lenore provides the reader with a delicious stew of angst, miscommunication, humor, primal behavior, questioning of ethics, outrage, and some hot sex scenes.

Blair's argument with his super-ego, and Jim's accusations of Blair lusting after everybody from their eighty year old neighbor lady to the pizza delivery guy, Jim castigating himself over his evil mastermind of a subconscious, and Blair putting a positive spin on Stockholm Syndrome are sure to delight you.

Why this must be read:

First off, if incest is a dealbreaker for you, don't click. It's fully consensual and both characters are past the age of consent, but I don't want to be responsible for hitting anyone's squicks. That said, you'd be missing out on a really beautiful and nuanced story; it deals with the issues without turning into a melodrama, and there's a lot of gorgeous domesticity and teenage boys goofing off.

This fic belongs to a subsection of Barcelona fandom that I wish were bigger, namely the junior teams. Most of the fic is understandably written about the much-publicized senior team, but Barcelona also runs a football academy, and the B team (the reserves, just below the first team in the hierarchy) gets a fair amount of local media coverage. Plus most of them are on Twitter, charmingly unguarded at times (she says, revealing her stalker tendencies), and utterly adorable! Thiago, the older Alcantara brother, has been promoted to the first team since the fic was written, so fandom is likely to see a lot more of him, and the media machine is already gearing up for Rafa. Might as well get to know them now!
