Fandom: GENERATION KILL
Pairing: Nate Fick/Brad Colbert
Length: 9882

Author Website: Generation Kill Fan Fic
Why this must be read:

For Valentines we're going to have a fic that is about love, and what we'll do for it. Like the last rec, this is another fic dealing with one of the hard issues. DADT is no longer in force, but while it was, it was a difficult thing to deal with - and for slashfic in this fandom, it's a big thing. While many fics gloss over it, this one hits it head on, and in a big way.

This fic deals with what would happen if Brad was accused under DADT. As a man who's always been lifer - career Marine - Brad has to come to terms with discharge and where he goes from there. The characterisation is fantastic - Brad's conflict and how he deals with it; Nate's help and understanding. It shows them as real guys with real problems, and holds a candle to their failings as well as their strengths. While this doesn't have a happy ending, per se, it's hopeful, and feels all the more real for it.

The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most

06:54 am On the Sidelines by Taylorgibbs (PG13)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Gibbs/Tony
Length: 2,700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] taylorgibbs
Author Website: Fanfic.net
Why this must be read:

Author's Summary: The Dc earthquake is just one of the things that rattles Gibbs.

I know I'm not the only one who when they first heard about the Washington DC earthquake wondered how it affected our favorite NCIS team. Taylorgibbs gives us a tender aftermath with caring neighbors, a protective!Gibbs, a hurting Tony, and a deep yearning for a sequel. I'll be the first to admit that I just wanted to cuddle these neighbors, especially the elderly slash fans who are contemplating the pairings of their favorite shows. I can see myself doing this in later years, I'll tell ya.

Gibbs realizing that life is too short and that one shouldn't sit it out on the sidelines just made me smile. This is one of those fics that will just leave you smiling and waiting eagerly for more. Hopefully, Taylorgibbs will oblige us in future. :)

Title: Highly Classified and Very Hush Hush by rageprufrock
Pairing: none
Length: 1,704 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock
Author Website: glitterati
Why this must be read:

Author's Summary: Gibbs sometimes wonders what he did to deserve these morons, but then he looks through the one-way window at three naked and extremely uncomfortable-looking Marines and figures it could be worse.

This still makes me giggle like crazy long after I've first read it. Rageprufrock has captured everybody's voices incredibly; I can hear everybody loud and clear in my head. And the circumstances in which she has these two canons meet!! Three naked marines suddenly appearing in a Washington DC mall, who's going to get the call but our favorite NCIS team right? Their interactions with Rodney and John, and the marine's reactions to those very same guys, just made me giggle, chuckle, and almost snort my Pepsi out my nose, even during my re-read prior to writing this rec. Definitely a fic to read when one wants a chuckle!

Pairing: Gen. Cracky, cracky gen.

Author Website: Not sure if there's a single place. Fic is posted about on different comm's and archives.
Why this must be read:

I don't usually go out of my way to seek out crack fics, but the author's summary caught me because I realized, as I read it, that I could SO ENTIRELY RELATE LIKE WHOA:

"At some point I realized that all my favorite shows had the same main character: someone supernaturally brilliant and tortured who could analyze anybody in a second, have the complete scoop on them and see them coming from a mile away and hence never be taken off guard or bested. I wondered what this said about me. I also wondered what it would be like to stick them all in the same room..."

All four fandoms are given equal weight, so if you're aware of at least two of them, I highly recommend checking this hilarious little concept out.

11:16 am Yu Yu Hakusho/Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin (NC-17)

Title:  History Lessons  by Rose and Julie
Pairing:  Keiko/Kenshin, hints of Keiko/Kurama
Length:  14K-ish
Authors on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] buffybot76 and [livejournal.com profile] whirleeq
Author Website:  Story found at MediaMiner.org

Why this is a must read:

I know I’ve stated somewhere that I’m a sucker for time travel fics.  This one is sort of a time travel with a bit of a twist at the end.  Or maybe a Rip Van Winkle description would be better.  With a twist.  Anyway, Keiko has been studying the Meiji Restoration in history class and gets a chance to meet the greatest assassin of the Ishin Shisi, the feared Hitokiri Battousai.  With a twist.

I loved the way these two authors paced the story.  I found the set up for the two to get together to be sweet with just the right amount of angst and of course the sex was hot, which is a given.  Having a basic knowledge of Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin will help with this fic, as a lot of Kenshin’s early days before and just after he becomes a wanderer is mentioned.

01:39 pm Life on Mars/Slings & Arrows (PG)
There are actually more Life on Mars crossovers than I had anticipated. There are the crossovers with Ashes to Ashes, Doctor Who (and related fandoms) as well as other shows featuring John Simm and Philip Glenister. And then there are crossovers that don't seem nearly as intuitive, until you finish reading them just *knowing* that they actually happened. In both canons.
Title: An entrance somewhere else

Length: 1,400

Why this must be read:
Oliver Welles finds himself transported to 1970s Manchester, where he offers helpful advice to Sam and Gene and is then forced to spend more time in CID than he may have wanted for his trouble. Petra's Oliver, Sam, and Gene are wonderful as always, and this fic combines Oliver's thinking about his past and continued attention to ways he could stage everything around him with his observations of Sam and Gene. It combines humor with moments of sadness and is an excellent character study/ casefic.

Title: Holmes vs. Harkness
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] coinin
Author Website: On Ao3
Why this must be read:

This story is amazing and hysterical. I was debating between two completely different crossovers when I ran across this one. There are a couple lines in here that are so funny I laugh out loud when I remember them. Which is awkward out in public.

Author's Summary: In which Captain Jack gets in a little over his head and is introduced to the myriad joys of bureaucracy, Mycroft is smug, the Guide offers up some helpful advice, John Watson doesn't share, and, in a strange turn of events, Jack doesn't get laid even once.

04:29 pm Harry Potter/Discworld (Teen)
Title: End of the Line by shewhoguards
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: Couldn't find her
Author Website: FFN
Why this must be read: The Harry Potter/Discworld combination works really well in this story. The events take place in the Beyond, where people wait to watch the next train. Shewhoguards has a great command of the two verses and integrates the character of Death really well into the HP universe. The writing is superb and the author uses emotive language really well. There is a great thread of forgiveness running through the fic, with many characters learning to forgive and move on in the afterlife.

The author integrates several notable HP characters in the course of the chapters and even makes Bellatrix into a somewhat redeemable character. That in itself is amazing. Even if you've never been exposed to the Discworld novels, you'll enjoy this story immensely.

Title: Nowhere Seen by [livejournal.com profile] queenside
Pairing: Kirk/McCoy
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] queenside

Why this must be read:

Kirk is having strange dreams about his past lives and McCoy is not helping.  This is a reincarnation crossover I don’t want to spoil the who used to be who but it really works if you think about it.

Title: Colours of the World (Spice Up Your Life) by gala_apples
Pairing: gen, mentioned Show Pony/Doctor Death Defying and hinted Spice Girls GSF
Length: 2,120 words
Author on LJ & DW: [livejournal.com profile] gala_apples & [personal profile] gala_apples
Author on AO3: [archiveofourown.org profile] gala_apples

Why this must be read: Ghoul doesn't like getting visits from other resistance groups, but it's a necessary evil. - The one where the Spice Girls is another of the resistance groups in the Killjoys universe.

This is a fascinating story. It's the kind of scenario that could easily be played for laughs but gala_apples really makes it work. I love the subtle way we're shown that this isn't only trading for goods, it's also an exchange of knowledge and an opportunity to see other points of views. Even Frank, for all his reluctance and suspicions, realises how important it is, particulary for Grace and her future.

09:48 pm The Magnificent Seven/Doom (G)
Fandom: The Magnificent Seven/Doom (2005)
Pairing: None
Length: 1975
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] siluria
Author Website: Siluria on AO3 Why this must be read: I was originally going to rec Siluria's hilarious Mag7/Dinosaur crossover except I'm not sure dinos count as a fandom? And I'm not sure a graphic counts as a fic. So I'm going to hedge my bets and rec her dystopian crossover fic. Doom, the film based on the video game, featured Karl Urban as John Grimm and this story is from his perspective, where the world is dying of a virus, and Four Corners doesn't care much for new faces in town.

Four Corners was less of a town and more of a single main street with a row or two of buildings running parallel to it. The brightest light in the street seemed to come from what had been a bar, and as John neared it, he realized it still served as its original purpose, and as a meeting place. He glanced down the street before he gave into temptation and crossed over the road. As his hand rested on the door handle the hairs on the back of his neck prickled. In the gloom his keen sight picked out the silhouette on the roof of the townhouse across the street, his eyesight sharpening until he could see the sniper’s rifle, its barrel pointed at his head.
