Fandom: GENERATION KILL
Pairing: Gen, Q-tip
Length: 1057

Why this must be read:

Q-tip is not often featured in fic; he has a very specific voice that's tough to get right. Goddamn if this gen piece doesn't own his voice from the start. That's impressive, but then this look inside his head goes on to say something, about war and perspective and being part of a team. Even a lowly Corporal, like Q-tip, can do his part for his guys. Brief and lovely.

Sitting in the back of the LT’s Humvee is the shit.

Fandom: COMMUNITY
Pairing: Troy/Abed, ensemble
Length: ~16K

Why this must be read:

I knew I was going to rec one of Neigedens' fics this month, because they're always well written, interesting, and in tone with the show. I settled for this one. One reason is that I wanted to give you guys a longer story to really sink your teeth into! My other recs this month are all under ten thousand words.

The other, more important reason that I chose this fic is the plot. There's the study group shenanigans that we all know and love, and also a dash of action and intrigue. A short summary, in the author's words: Abed's almost positive that Troy's been kidnapped, but the first hurdle, of course, is always convincing others to see what's right in front of their eyes.

This one was suggested by [livejournal.com profile] slyreflection, and despite generally trying to stay away from La Liga fic, it's just too awesome to pass by.

Fandom: FOOTBALL RPF
Pairing: Cristiano Ronaldo/Leo Messi
Length: One shot, approximately 1000 words

Why this must be read: Quite simply, read this piece because it's hilarious. It's all about humour and embraces that. Football fandom does a lot of serious fics, but this isn't one of them. This is one of those fics that makes you just about pee yourself laughing.
"You can't invite people to an elopement!" Cesc insisted into the receiver.

"Does that mean... you're not coming?" Leo asked uncertainly. Cesc first cursed himself silently and then resisted the urge to bang his head against a wall.

"No, you idiot, of course I'm coming. Like I would miss it. I'm just saying, they're called elopements for a reason. Like, running away in secret. Without a guest list."

"But it is secret," said Leo. "Did you see the P.S.?"

Of course he had. P.S. Please don't tell anyone. Yeah, good luck with that, Cesc thought darkly. It wasn't like they were the two best football players in the world as well as global jet-setting mega-celebrities or anything—one of them more than the other, not that Cesc was naming names.

On second thought, maybe this whole eloping thing did kind of make sense.

"I saw the P.S.," he said. "So how many people did you invite?" It never hurt to start thinking about damage control in advance.

Why this must be read: It’s a twisty-turny story that combines action and mystery into a satisfying read. Oh, and it’s also a crossover with Supernatural, although you don’t have to be familiar with anything but the basic concepts of that show to enjoy it.

Jim and Blair are on a stakeout when Jim smells something “like wet wolf”, and hears something as only he can—someone in an alley being attacked. He interrupts the assault by pumping six bullets into the attacker; only to have it escape. The victims, 17-year-old Dean Winchester and his 12-year-old brother Sam, are taken into the protective custody of Jim and Blair, since their father is missing.

The characters pair off naturally; Jim with Dean and Blair with Sam. It isn’t simply the corresponding age difference; Dean recognizes Jim’s authority and competency as a warrior; he has little patience for Blair who, in his eyes, is a book nerd, especially when he sees Blair’s aversion to guns. However, Sam is slowly learning to respect Blair’s strengths; his self-assurance, his researching skills, and his ability to keep a secret and spin the truth to get the job done.

And the respect isn’t one-way; Jim and Blair get their eyes opened to some pretty bizarre things as they get a crash-course in demon-hunting. Enjoy.
