Why this must be read: It’s an historical AU, with a twist--and what a twist it is. TS is such a natural fandom for AUs of all kinds. You can drop the guys into pretty much any time, any place and in any situation, even ones that are a bit… out there. After all, canon has spirit animals, ghosts, blue dream visions—it’s little wonder authors can push the envelope with confidence; readers simply ask for a bigger envelope!

Such is Bluewolf’s tale. It starts before canon, by about 3000 years. Naomi and Blair (who start life as Noma and Balar) are part of a village, where a Watchman (in this case a woman) has come to visit and be welcomed into the tribe. She immediately gloms onto Balar, instinctively knowing he’s a Companion. Balar interprets her actions as an assault and pushes her away; as she falls, her head hits a rock and she dies. The superstitions of the time run rampant, so of course this is an evil omen. As punishment, the village elder puts an enchantment on Balar: he will age very slowly but never die until he is accepted by a Watchman. Noma is included in the enchantment and they are both banished.

Thus begins an epic search; who knew sentinels were so rare? On the way, Bluewolf shares how the world changes and how it remains the same over the years. She’s done her homework and the details provide a lot of enjoyment. This Blair and Naomi are still recognizable, but their experiences put a different spin on things when they finally dovetail into the TS canon universe.

Bluewolf has been writing steadily in TS for more than a decade and is one of our most prolific authors. “To Serve a Sentinel” is one of her more recent offerings. Enjoy.

Fandom: FOOTBALL RPF
Pairing: Iker Casillas/Cesc Fabregas
Length: 3000 words

Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] tyrannicides
Why this must be read: This is one of those clever fics that turns a trope on its head and makes you reconsider how you think about it. I love vampire fic in general, and so I was incredibly pleased when [livejournal.com profile] slyreflection suggested this one to me. It's emotional and raw and just amazing. [livejournal.com profile] tyrannicides is an amazing writer, and this piece really highlights why for me. She's able to something original and moving and make you feel for the characters.

There are lots of reasons why Iker works at a hospital.

1.) Flexible hours. Extra money for the midnight shift. That's always a plus.

2.) Plenty of blood bags. AB is his favorite.

(It's not that Iker has moral qualms, it's just that it's a lot of effort to get close enough to people to take just a little bit, and living that way would mean he has to go to clubs or bars all the time. It would mean being social. It's not that Iker's anti-social. He just doesn't particularly like socializing much. Not in those settings, anyways.)

Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Mike Carden/Kevin Jonas
Length: 4607 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] quintenttsy
Author Website: on AO3
Why this must be read:
I love a good soulbonding trope, and this one has the twist that the two people bonded can't stand each other -- so they don't want to hang around together, but it hurts to be apart. Quintenttsy also digs a little into the creepy consent issues that rear their heads when you think about soulbonds for too long, which is nifty. This is short but sweet, full of feelings and angst and Working Stuff Out. And soulbonds, don't forget those. *g*

11:14 pm Accidental by menolly_au (PG-13)
Fandom: HOUSE M.D.
Pairing: House & Wilson friendship
Length: ~1400 words
Warnings: Suicide attempt. Also off-screen death of Sarah (Wilson's cat).
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] menolly_au
Author Website: No separate page or tags, but most of the entries on [livejournal.com profile] menolly_au's LJ are fics.

Why this must be read:

While perhaps not initially very well-known outside of [livejournal.com profile] sick_wilson, [livejournal.com profile] menolly_au quickly became one of my favorite authors in the House fandom. She exhibits a deep understanding of the characters and a terrific knack for keeping them both sympathetic and in-character - no small feat at times, especially given the canonical developments of recent years. "Accidental" is a superbly plausible look at what Wilson's reaction to the devastating events surrounding the Season Seven finale might have been. Wilson's voice recounting his actions and experiences hits exactly the right note of detachment, and the reconstruction of his friendship with House via actions not words is handled perfectly.
