Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 29k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hgdoghouse (though no recent use)
Author Website: Works at Circuit Archive

Why this must be read: In 2007 after a longish break, HG surprised the fandom at Christmas with this gem. It's set at the holidays but that's not what it's about. It's an older lads story, and while I'm not one for this genre, I found this delightful peek into their daily life without shamoop.

So peek in )

06:35 pm A Crowd Is Not Company by chlorate (R)
Fandom: GENERATION KILL
Pairing: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick
Length: ~32,000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] chlorate
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] chlorate
Why this must be read:

This epic 19th century farmhand AU builds a world far from canon, populates it with all our guys, and manages to be every bit as real and painful as the mini. It's not a light story, by any means, but it's a great one, full of rich detail and unbelievable UST. Gorgeous and haunting.

Nate arrives in Mathilda in late August. The harvest is in full swing and farmers are too busy to think about the school or the schoolmaster they hired to come all the way from Boston. Apparently Schwetje's wife doesn't want him in the house in town after all. They tell him he'll have to board with Brad Colbert out on his farm, since Brad has built a house and it's grand enough for a Harvard man.

06:52 pm As Long As They Haven't Been Cremated by Saphariel (rated T or probably PG-13)
Fandom: DEATH NOTE
Pairing: none
Length: ~2000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] saphariel
Author Website: "Bloodshot Eyes" on Fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

This short, brutal and beautiful gen-fic is a divergence AU set between the manga ending's final showdown and the manga ending's one-year-later epilogue. It involves the use of the death eraser, a device that is canon for the Death Note franchise, but not for the main continuity. The death eraser only exists in the pilot chapter's alternate continuity.

The way the death eraser works is that you can restore anyone who's been killed by a death note to life by erasing their name, no matter how poor the state of their corpse, as long as they haven't been cremated. As you might expect, the death eraser appears in many sentimental and fluffy fanfics, mostly as a way to soften the evil of Kira's killings and to resurrect many favorite characters. This fanfic is decidedly not one of those sentimental fluff pieces. It is dark, spooky and violent, with seriously frightening consequences for using the death eraser.

11:27 pm Don't Know the Taste of a Never Ending Ache by perfectlystill (R)
Fandom: The Vampire Diaries
Pairing: Klaus/Rebekah
Length: about 4200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] perfectlystill
Author Website: fic masterlist

Why this must be read: I went back and forth on including this story because it no longer fits in with the show's canon. It was written before 3x08 and therefore draws its own picture of the Original family and Rebekah's relationship with her brothers. Despite that, the entire pieces draws such a clear and vivid picture of Rebekah. I also love getting to see Klaus through her eyes, the way they were bonded when they were young because they were both younger children and how that connection changed as he delved into his hybrid side.
