12:16 pm VID REC: STAR WARS - "Moving Mountains"
Vidder: 1jonde1
Musical Artist: Two Steps From Hell
Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan
Vidder on LJ: unknown
Vidder Website: YouTube Channel
Why you must watch this vid:

This vid contains music from an esteemed trailer production company and it suits the monochrome value of the piece: the unity and lyrical quality of the perfect Padawan/Master team. They go about their work on a mission that turns as non-routine as you'd ever imagine. Be prepared for a profound ending.

01:44 pm Imitations of a Jedi Master by [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove (M)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan
Length: ~8000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove
Author Website: The Lecherous Tentacles of Dr. Squidlove
Why this must be read:

Certain fandoms have certain cliches in fanfics: Batman's Batcave resembles the comics' rendition, containing a giant penny and a green allosaurus. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan shared an apartment, everyone knows that. It had two bedrooms, a kitchenette and a balcony, a suite which had lots of action. But this story is written to a challenge to tweak the fanfic cliché and it does so in two scrumptious ways: Obi-Wan is not Qui-Gon's Padawan, and the Jedi quarters are a large bunkroom. Everyone in one place at nighttime. After lights out, let the tiptoeing begin. Beyond the interesting setting, Obi-Wan indulges Qui-Gon's needs, and discovers his own needs surprise him.

Why this vid must be watched:

Back in 2006, while I was attending my first ever con, I saw this vid and it is single-handedly responsible for making me want to vid. A Hero’s Take is over 10 years old and grainy, but the humor and spot on use of instrumentals from Looney Tune cartoons to poke fun at the Four Horseman are just fantastic.

This hasn’t been uploaded to her Youtube page, but you can still download it from her vid archive.

05:13 pm VID REC: Stargate Atlantis - "Stress"
Vidder: Rache & Sandy
Musical artist: Jim's Big Ego
Pairing: none
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords and [livejournal.com profile] sherrold
Vidder's website: vidders.net & Vids by Clucking Belles
Why this vid kicks ass: Hands! Rodney McKay's beautiful, expressive hands! This is a marvelous tribute to our favorite snarky scientist. I can't hear this song without thinking about Rodney; it's almost as if it were written just for him. Rache & Sandy are two of my favorite fan vidders - you probably haven't seen their stuff unless you were lucky enough to see them presented at conventions in their videos rooms or have a membership to Vidders.net. (Their videos aren't posted on YouTube or Vimeo.) Hands down, if you'll pardon the pun, this is one of my all-time favorite videos in any fandom.

Stress - You need a membership to view videos on Vidders.net but it's free and totally worth it if you love to browse through schloads of incredibly well-made fan videos.

I've embedded the video under the cut. Enjoy! )

Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES FRANCHISE
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 156,716
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] madlorific
Author Website: Author Page on AO3
Why this must be read:
This story been rec'd everywhere (except here, it seems), for good reason: it's an epic Actor AU that takes a romantic cliche to a whole new level of reading pleasure.

Because this is an alternate reality story, it's accessible to those who are unfamiliar with canon, who just appreciate a fun m/m romance.

Vidder: KatrinDepp
Musical artist: The Glitch Mob
Pairing: None, although John is a big presence there
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] katrindepp

Why this vid kicks ass
At just over two minutes in length, it's incredible how clearly this vid brings the viewer into the intense experience of Sherlock's Mind Palace, that place where all the facts, evidence, images, experiences, and deductions swirl into the Truth.

This vid is an unusual one in that the song choice is instrumental electronica (tbh not my favorite genre, but this is an excellent choice); moreover, lots of dialog is used in an extremely effective way. In this case, the words complement the scenes perfectly. Technical skills align with artistic vision.

11:57 pm The Story of Arthur's Life by Zetaori
Fandom: INCEPTION
Pairing: Arthur/Eames
Length: 8,146
Author on LJ: [info]zetaori
Author Website:
Zetaori on AO3
Why this must be read:

This is in truth the story of Arthur's life. How Arthur himself is not quite a real boy; and Eames is the most real thing in his life. Arthur spends too much while Eames drinks too much; diametric opposites coming together and flying apart like polarized electromangets.

The cadence of Zetaori’s writing style gives the work a haunting quality, reinforcing Arthur’s isolation and lack of self-knowledge or past. This work stuck with me for a long time, and I’ve found myself rereading attempting to glean clues to all of the ambiguities unsolved.
