Title: A Comedy of Errors by Lost SpookPairing: Kerr Avon / Ros Myers (implied only) Author on LJ: lost_spookAuthor Website: Archive of Our OwnWhy this must be read:On one show, there was a team of misfit freedom fighters (who didn’t think of themselves as terrorists) with massive personal issues, running from the secret police and roaming the universe in a sarcastic space ship which occasionally wobbled.
On the other show, there was a team of a misfit spies (who didn’t think of themselves as the secret police) with massive personal issues, chasing after terrorists and defending Britain from a home base with lampshades made from upside-down Ikea wastepaper baskets.
Put the two together: hilarity ensues. Ros interrogates Avon? Comedy gold! Vila and Ruth go out for ice cream? Comedy gold! Malcolm wonders whether the Liberator’s teleport bracelets were built on children’s television? Comedy … sticky backed plastic?
As good as both shows may have been, they also tended to take themselves way too seriously. This crossover crackfic neatly skewers that self-importance, but all in good fun and with plenty of witty banter.
Given the angst quotient in both fandoms, there aren’t too many stories which are simply fun, in character, and enjoyable. It’s worth savoring this one.
Excerpt:
"I transported directly from my spaceship, the Liberator," explained Avon airily. "I'm sorry, is something wrong, Miss Myers? You did say you wanted the truth." Ros met his gaze. "I'm too old for fairy tales." "I sympathise." "I want answers, not sympathy. What was your target? How many of you are there in your group, and what were you doing trying to get into the Commons?" He sighed. "You seem to have a dull, one-track mind." "If you won't co-operate," she said, "we'll have to try more painful methods. This isn't the middle ages, but you'd be amazed what we can get away with doing to you without even breaking the law. Want to find out, or are you going to talk?" Avon's expression hardened. "Do your worst. You'll find, as others have done, that I don't break easily under torture." "Shame," she said. "I was looking forward to seeing you scream and beg for mercy." He smiled. "I could manage a whimper if it would make you happier." "Sorry," said Ros. "Nothing less than genuine, bleeding agony cuts any ice with me." A Comedy of Errors

Title: Apparent ('Homesick' Re-dub) Pairing: pre-Cinna/Alec Hardison Author on LJ: hegemonyAuthor Website: Her AO3 pageWhy this must be read:Despite loving both fandoms, I would never have said, "I know! A Leverage/HG xover!" But more than just coming up with the idea, this author makes both fan texts just a little something MORE by bringing them together. The underlying theme here is loss, and moving on from loss, creating ourselves anew from it, and Cinna's POV is fresh and interesting, his insight in Alec particularly telling for an audience who has always seen Alec with his team. It's just really, damn, good. ( Excerpt: )Apparent ('Homesick' re-dub)

Buckle up tighter, ‘cos we’re heading for a Crack Van Collision! I think we’re somewhere in the suburbs, in a bar, with a fight in the offing… Fandoms: THE PROFESSIONALS / GOOD OMENS Pairing: Bodie/Doyle and Crowley/Aziraphale Length: 20k Author Website: http://www.chezshay.net/ Why this must be read: because Good Omens is one of my favourite, feel-good rereads and Terry Pratchett is very, very funny. Shay Sheridan reproduces the style of the angel/devil conversations very faithfully, and although our lads are only seen through the eyes of Crowley and Aziraphale, they are spot-on in their characterisations and their banter. This is great – if you don’t know it, give it a try!

Fandom: ONE PIECE Pairing: None/Gen Length: ~77k Author on LJ: velkynkarmaAuthor Website: FF.Net ProfileWhy this must be read: I was mildly surprised, but also immensely pleased, when this author came into the fandom, and brought with her more than one straight-up adventure/battle/friendship fic. Awwww yeah. I had to go with reccing her first effort, as it remains my personal favorite overall, though most every one of her fics has some element that made me tempted to rec it instead. But with Fortunae Gauntlet, more than one or two things about it have always stuck with me. I liked the variety of fighting styles of the enemies, the innovative battle tactics of the crew against said enemies (it's very One Piece), and the fact the attention of the fic is balanced among the different crewmembers, something that isn't seen in fanfic as often as I'd personally like. I really enjoyed that the last battle gave my favorite character an unexpected character a shining moment, though the fight does conclude with a showdown between Luffy and the enemy leader, just like you might find in the original manga itself. The fic's an exciting read from start to finish. Good battle writers can be hard to come by, even when the source material has battle as a major element. Truth be told, it's tough to imagine the fandom without velkynkarma! Note that this story takes place before Franky and Brook joined the crew, so they are not present. Fortunae Gauntlet

Title: "How The West Was Won" by Civilized_era Pairing: Han Geng/Heechul/Amber Length: ~9.5000w Author on LJ: civilized_eraAuthor Website: capebuffaloWhy this must be read: I love this fic so much, and it isn't just because it's about finding yourself and baking cakes—which are two of my FAVORITE THINGS to read about—but it's also because this is a large-cast fic and yet every single character is not only accurately portrayed, but also hilariously lovable. OT3s are hard, especially considering this one doesn't have a whole lot of "canon" support, but she writes it perfectly. It's also just an all-American fic, where the writer is writing about things she knows backwards and forwards, and that ease and comfort with the source material bleeds into the writing. This is a funny, thought-provoking, casual-feeling piece that really says so much more than it seems to at first, and it leaves an emotional impact that lingers in the best possible way. Fandom: The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Pairing: Napoleon Solo/a crow ... gen Length: 2,114 words Author: akane42meAuthor Website: lj journal page Why this must be read: This is one of the most interesting and innovative stories I've ever read. The author weaves a tale around the observations of a crow on the hunt for food. What he sees, and subsequently follows, is a wounded UNCLE agent as he tries to escape his THRUSH tormentors. The dialogue between man and bird never lags, never disappoints, and the crow proves almost the mercenary equal to the other bird of prey we know. Read this one, and then go in search of all of this writer's stories. You won't be disappointed. Spring Thaw

Title: Temps by humantales Pairing: Gen Length: 17982 words Author on LJ: humantales Author Website: humantales on AO3 Why this must be read: Because it just makes so much sense. As Mycroft says Sherlock and John joining Jack’s Torchwood team is a terrifying match made in heaven. This is a true ensemble and seeing John and Sherlock become part of the team as they chase Aliens and fight Alien crime is just wonderful. This is a awesome character based adventure and a truly fun read. Temps

Title: Shadows of Angmar by Mike Taurguss Pairing: various and sundry, but heavily inclined to Gabrielle/OC Length: 315,223 words Author on LJ: no idea Author Website: Mike Taurguss on FF.netWhy this must be read:Have you ever gotten stuck in a fandom rut? Think you've read it all and can predict the endings? And then suddenly a story comes along and it blows you away because it is like nothing you've ever read before and you keep thinking that it shouldn't work so well and that it really isn't the kind of fanfic you like to read and then three hundred thousand words later you emerge from reading it in a daze... yeah. That's this story. Gabrielle and Xena are mysteriously transported to Middle-Earth (about 20 years after the War of the Ring). There are also some other travelers that literally crash land there, too, and it seems Gabby and Xena have a history with these characters (the prequel to Shadows of Angmar, Xena and the Flight of the Phoenix details those adventures in only 40,821 words). It's really hard to describe this story... for the first several chapters I was all "WTF!??! Space ships? I don't! Guns? What!?!" but eventually I got past that and started enjoying the incredible characterization, dialogue, and detailed world building (both original and Tolkien). You should know that it takes a skilled writer to keep me off-balance and intrigued. If you are a fan of military and/or space operas, like Xena: Warrior Princess AND The Lord of the Rings, don't mind a whole gaggle of well-developed original characters, and enjoy good writing, this story is for you! Warning: The story is not, technically, complete, but it has been in progress for 6 years and the last update was yesterday. Since it'll probably be awhile before this fandom is driven here again, I couldn't resist recommending it, but I don't want you to get through 300k words without knowing that it's not over yet. On the other hand, Chapter 17 ends at a good stopping place, and hopefully the author will update in a few months... Shadows of Angmar by Mike Taurguss

Title: Two immortals walk into a bar... by Eledhwen Pairing: Captain Jack Harkness/Captain Jack Sparrow Author on LJ: torn_eledhwenLength: 1,243 words Author Website: Dreamy AspirationsWhy this must be read:Of all of the many and varied stories with this particular crossover pairing (because, really, how could you not want to read/write it?), this one is my favorite. Just a short little piece that's really more character study and atmospheric rather than plotty. Two immortals walk into a bar... by Eledhwen ( alternate link to story)

Title: Transformations and Machinations by Kirsteena Pairing: none Length: 19,226 words Author on LJ: kirsteena Author Website: Ancient of Days Why this must be read: What if the suitcase nuclear bomb really had gone off in the Spooks series 7 finale? This story starts with the premise that Ros, Lucas, and Connie didn’t stop the bomb in time, then follows the Section D survivors through underground cat and mouse games with the Russians, their journey through a devastated Britain, and spy games as the nation rebuilds. Along the way, Ros, Lucas, and Connie meet Martha Jones, after she’s returned from her travels with the Doctor, Tom Quinn, now retired from MI-5, and a few other faces from the past.
It’s not easy to cross two shows of very different genres, but Kirsteena does that here, building a plotty, suspenseful story which does justice to both universes. The characters are all fleshed out well enough to be dimensional even without prior knowledge of either show, but fans of both shows will appreciate the character building even more. The story is full of great character interactions (Ros-Lucas, Martha-Lucas, Tom-Lucas, Ros-Connie, and a few surprises) and maintains a wonderfully ominous mood entirely in keeping with the apocalyptic nature of the AU. Excerpt: Getting one Russian, with a gun pointing at his head to agree that there might be the tiniest possibility that a nuclear bomb had gone off in London was one thing. Getting six Russians, heavily armed and following their own specific orders, on their own with no back up to call on, to listen to what could sound like an insane story was a much harder proposition. If they pulled it off, for his next trick, Lucas would walk on water. They both had about an equal chance of success. Transformations and Machinations Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
