02:10 am The Joinery by arbitrarily (Teen and up)
Hi, everyone, I’m [livejournal.com profile] smirnoffmule and my van is running pretty late this month, sorry about that. I’m reccing fic from George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and I’ll try to keep them coming in for the rest of the month.

Fandom: A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE
Pairing: Cersei Lannister/Ned Stark
Length: 14k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] falseeeyelashes
Author Website: arbitrarily on AO3

Spoilers? This fic goes AU before the events of the first book, so technically contains no actual spoilers for the series. I would advise caution if you haven't yet read A Game of Thrones, though.

Why this must be read: By what right does the wolf judge the lion -- Ned Stark takes the Iron Throne, and with it, a Lannister for a wife. This is an excellent and haunting fic that takes a pivotal character moment from the series and turns it into an AU. I am so impressed at how well the author made this very unlikely couple work without compromising on characterisation. Both Cersei and Ned walk very different paths but remain palpably themselves. This is an excellent character study of Cersei particularly. I really love the unusual, lyrical style, and the way the universe we know keeps trying to assert itself through the story.

10:43 pm A Snowball In Hell - Periwinkle27... in memoriam
Fandom: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Genre: Gen
Length: Short
Author: [livejournal.com profile] periwinkle27
Author Website: LJ and elsewhere
Why this must be read:

Periwinkle passed away this week, the result of a head on collision, and the news of this sad event has just reached us here on LJ.  Susan will be missed, but her wit and stories will remain.  This one is a very short little bit that speaks volumes, I think, about how she viewed the fandom and its main duo.  It's brief and snarky, and somehow seemed just right for logging a memory of someone who brought so much to the MFU family and fandom.  The title is also wildly ironic, and reminds me all the more of her propensity for humor and love of Weird Al Yankovic.
We bid her adieu as she embarks on the next part of her journey.

Fandom: HOCKEY RPF
Pairing: Ryan Whitney/Taylor Hall, Ryan Whitney/other people, Max Talbot/lots of other people
Length: ~ 26,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] s0ckahtoa
Author Website: on AO3
Why this must be read:YOU GUYS!! I feel like I stumbled upon a goldmine or something!

Okay, I had all my recs together by the end of May. And today, I browse the Hockey tag at AO3 and .... wow, I knew I had to rec this about two paragraphs in. To quote Taylor Hall in this: „Beauty!" (I've been grinning so hard for the last couple of hours. This story is amazing!)

So, Ryan Whitney has a bet with Max Talbot: who can sleep with more NHL draft first picks? The result? HILARITY and maybe-feelings!

(Not exactly a crack fic, but so so so funny. Also – and that just might be my personal weirdness – a story that makes safe sex sexy. You know that point in a story where the guys get lubed up and stuff and sometimes the writers don't get how to write condoms into a sex scene? So not a problem in this one!)

And there are so many great scenes! The breakfast in chapter 3! Basically every single line in chapter 1! Family dinner! Aunt Gertrude! CAN YOU TELL I'M EXCITED ABOUT THIS STORY?? (here comes a huge portion of text in all caps that was deleted because I fangirl-embarassed myself and you don't want to read that)

It's Just a Thing on LJ and on AO3
