Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Martha Fraser/George Fraser Length: 10'500 words Author on LJ: luzulaAuthor Website: @ AO3Why this must be read:This is my favourite backstory in the due South fandom. In canon Martha and George Fraser, Benton Fraser's grandparents, are only mentioned a few times in passing to explain some of his more obscure knowledge/behaviours. But here luzula fleshes out a version of them based on these few informations, that I can identify with and want to read more about. Martha is a young woman who ran away from home to study at a teacher's college in Toronto in 1921. She is thirsty for knowledge and wants to experience more than the little village and the life as a farmer's wife and mother. There's also a wonderful female character of colour, Yinmui, who befriends Martha. The story is also available as a podfic by kalakirya. Open the World by luzula

Fandom: ONE PIECE Pairing: None/Gen Length: ~1k Author on LJ: peroxide_ficAuthor Website: FF.Net AccountWhy this must be read: I was trying to rec all from different authors since this is the fandom's first time here, but ... I really just can't pass this one up. It's classic Zoro at his directionally challenged finest. It's really no wonder that he gets lost so frequently and in so many ridiculous ways ... and Peroxide captures that aspect of Zoro perfectly in this hilarious short. Perhaps Sanji should think on the bright side: at least Zoro's not the ship's navigator. Zoro's DirectionsAlternate link: LJ

Fandom: XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS (UBER) Pairing: uber!Xena/uber!Gabrielle (Maddie/Syd) Length: 192,700ish words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Ann McMan.com, at The Athenaeum, at The Royal Academy of BardsWhy this must be read:This story is uberfic, which means that it is an Alternate Universe of the show. Or rather, this is Xena and Gabrielle in modern times with no reference to warlords, Greek gods, and monsters of the supernatural variety. This story is, quite simply, STUNNING. It is a beautiful romance between Dr. Maddie Stevenson (uber!Xena) and librarian Syd Murphy (uber!Gabrielle). It's a lushly described story with fully fleshed-out details. Syd, the new librarian of the town of Jericho, meets and starts falling for Maddie, the tall, attractive local physician. Slowly, their friendship blossoms into something more. The dialogue and flirting between the two main characters is witty and fun. I love the characters in this -- even the supporting cast is well-written. This author is amazing -- I highly recommend giving this story a try. Jericho by Ann McMan

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: johanna/gale Length: ~10k Author on LJ: pickle_ficAuthor Website: None that I know of Why this must be read:I realize this is starting to sound like a complete lie, but I'm really not a Gale person. It's just that so many authors in THG give such good Gale. Here, there's fantastic post-Mockingjay characterization of both Gale and Johanna, but even more interestingly, of Gale's family, who, despite the story being from Johanna's POV, allow you to see what Johanna looks like to people who have only ever seen her as a victor, which in turn allows the reader--and Johanna herself--to kind of figure out who she's becoming, post-revolution. I'm more than halfway through my driving month, and I think I'm finally getting the hang of this behemoth of a Squash car. So, let's switch gears (Squash willing), and head around that sharp curve ahead. A little slice of S&H season 4 awaits! Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 1,183 words Author on LJ: dawnebeth Author's Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/DawnwindWhy this must be read: When I think of exceptional writing - clever and creative, original and smooth as butter, Dawnwind is right there at the top of the class. Her affection for the boys pours through like summer sunshine, but she doesn't shy away from difficult situations, hurt, angsty-ness. You name it, Dawnwind can write it. Here - she's used the episode "Black and Blue" (a sometimes less than beloved episode) as a jumping off point. What she has in store is delicious and satisfying and endearing. Starsky has a job to do, and I think he'll do it well...if he doesn't get derailed by some of the sensual musings of his own mind. When I read this, I felt like I was standing right there, watching the boys in action. When you read, I know you will see why. Thanks for cruising and reading along with me! Close Shave

Fandom: HOCKEY RPF Pairing: mulit-team! focus on Bruins (Marc Savard/Tuuka Rask), Rangers (Brandon Prust/Brian Boyle, Henrik Lundqvist/Sean Avery), Hurricanes (Eric Staal/Tuomo Ruutu), but other teams and pairings as well Length: ~ 150,000 words Author on LJ: oxidativeAuthor Website: on AO3Why this must be read: Werewolves and Vampires! Politics and Turf wars! Bonding! Mindreading! Auras! Awesomeness! This is the ultimate AU and I love it so much! It's a fantastic, rich world that couldn't be further away from Twilight. The were-teams, who live in tight-knit packs led by an alpha, are the main protagonists and how they love and hunt and mate (I have little hearts in my eyes, right now) and raise their young (through adoption not mpreg, in case someone wants to know) is amazingly well thought out and, as weird as it sounds, completely plausible... . What we see of the vampires (oh, Jordan Staal) is intriguing to say the least. All in all it's a trope story that never ever feels tropey. This is an excerpt from the first story (timelinewise) "This City is on Fire Tonight": ( werewolves, who doesn't love them? )There is some continuity to the different stories, but you can still jump in at pretty much every point in the timeline. In honor of Mr. John Laurinaitis getting (kayfabe) fired -- we hope! -- on RAW this evening, here's a fic about Management behaving badly.
Fandom: WWE
Pairing: John Cena/Randy Orton; past Randy Orton/Triple H
Length: 22,549 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Ada15 on FF.net
Why this must be read: because it's, according to the author, "a different take on Randy Orton's face turn".
One thing you need to know about Randy Orton: in my Fandom Overview, I described Randy Orton as an "arrogant, sadistic loner who takes great pleasure in RKO-ing his opponents' heads off". Randy Orton as a face, ladies and gentlemen!
This improved Randy is a relatively new development; prior to the spring of 2010, Randy was an evil, manipulative, ends-justify-the-means, egomaniacal tyrant. Even Cena (the nicest guy on the WWE's roster) called him an a$$hole.
So, then, the question becomes -- what causes a guy like that to change his spots virtually overnight?
