11:38 am The Vorlon Gift by atsammy (Mature)
Fandom: BABYLON 5
Pairing: Susan Ivanova/Talia Winters
Length: 31,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sammysam
Author Website: atsammy at An Archive Of Our Own | [livejournal.com profile] fatedtales
Why this must be read:

"The Vorlons return something that Susan thought she'd lost forever."

One of my few disappointments with Babylon 5 was how short the much-lauded, well-beloved canon F/F relationship turned out to be. And that despite the canon cultural acceptance of same-sex relationships, we still ended up with the "dead or crazy lesbians" trope.

This fic is for all of those who wanted Talia to come back, or not be brainwashed, and get to be happy with Susan. Remember that one time where Kosh took a copy of Talia's brain back in Season 1? The author picks up that abandoned plot point, and goes on from there with a lovely plotty fic full of angst and healing and a long slow romance. The yenta!Vorlons fic you've been waiting for.

04:03 pm When Two Go Together Along The Way by Catwalksalone (Teen & Up Audiences)
Fandom: LEWIS
Pairing: Robbie Lewis^James Hathaway (explanation below)
Length: 37k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] catwalksalone
Author Website: catwalksalone at the AO3

Why this must be read:
"No one else understood. We faced the world down together. I think...I think if we'd tried to untangle ourselves then we may have come out of it missing a limb or an organ or two."

When Two Go Together Along the Way is a series of four linked stories. The first three are beautifully crafted glimpses of Lewis and Hathaway negotiating and simultaneously inventing their relationship. The author has a lovely take on it, describing it as a non-sexual romantic relationship, and saying that ^ is somewhere between / and &.

The fourth story is a brilliant case fic. It's long, emotionally satisfying, and it feels as though you're watching the show. The quote above is from one of the original characters involved in the case, but I feel it stands for the theme of the whole series. The stories are about family; finding it and recognizing it in whatever shape or form it comes. How Lewis and Hathaway come to acknowledge what they are to each other is quietly and beautifully done.

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS (UK)
Pairing: Sam/Gene
Length: 573 words
Author on LJ: draycevixen
Author Website: http://draycevixen.livejournal.com/
Why this must be read:

I quite recently discovered this fic (had a little help there...) and have to admit that I laughed my a**e off! The fic's two parts are a perfect juxtaposition of writing styles (one of them practically unheard of in this fandom), and the last line is a killer! The author categorized it as "crack", so it's the perfect start for me at the wheel of the van. (Plus, it hasn't been recced before. ;)) Go read and have fun!

11:08 pm Rag and Bone podficced by Dodificus, written by Jane Davitt (NC-17)

Why this must be read/listened to:

Jane Davitt wrote this for [livejournal.com profile] spook_me, The Spook Me Multi-Fandom Halloween Ficathon

Dodie's reading of this story is clear and expressive, and she draws you into the mystery as things get weirder and weirder for Jim and Blair. This story made me shiver with tension as Jim tries to balance what his skeptical mind is telling him with what his senses are reporting, and as the danger comes ever closer and closer to impacting Jim and Blair on a much more personal level.

One of the benefits of listening to this podfic, for me was that I couldn't just skim it to get to the part where all is revealed. It became a richer experience that way, as I savored what was happening in the moment. Also, I enjoyed the story while still doing necessary things, such as chores or driving, although I'm sure I paused a few times while doing dishes or dusting to just listen to this very well written story in a nicely done podfic format.

11:39 pm [SG-1] Audacity series by Penknife (adult)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Jack/Daniel, Daniel/Sam, Sam/Jack, Sam/Jack/Daniel
Length: Five linked short stories, each 1,300-5,600 words long
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] penknife
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:
This series of stories moves through canon to post-TV, stitching together a series of extremely complex relationships. Daniel adores Sam but is in love with Jack; Jack's some way in love with both of them but has set aside his relationship with Sam and finds any sort of open acknowledgement of his relationship with Daniel almost impossible -- even to themselves. It's painful and twisty and rings very true to what we know.

I particularly like the way that Daniel and Jack constantly lock themselves into a borderline snotty adversarial relationship that's all fun and games until someone gets hurt, I like the characterisation of Jack -- not just because of his snarky narrative voice, but also because of all the things he doesn't express, and I want to cheer for the very practical solution Sam finds in the end.

(1) Sleeping Arrangements
Jack's never liked those logic problems with the foxes and the geese and the boats
(2) Seize the Day
It's still a bad idea, but one day Jack finds he doesn't care anymore.
(3) Unspoken
There's only so far that either of them can bend before they break.
(This one is, I think, the best)
(4) Foxes, Geese, Boats
It's the damn logic problems again. Jack still hates those.
(5) Audacity
There's a time to seize the day
(… but this one is my favourite)
