Why this must be read:

In the mini, Brad states, "there are no cowboys." In this story, [livejournal.com profile] aeroport_art makes them actual cowboys. And the result is brilliant. She builds a while world here: Reno, NV, year 1888, with Brad as our trusty Sheriff. Nate shows up after a grisly shoot-out, piquing Brad's interest. Their interaction is wonderfully prickly, befitting the lawmen they both are. The rest of Bravo 2 is also here, all fully themselves as Brad's deputies, Nate's coworkers, or residents of the town. This story uses so many elements from canon, skillfully weaving them into the Old West. The result is gorgeous and tactile and so much fun:

"And I know you know already, but proper introduction: you're in Washoe County's one-and-only Reno. Population four thousand, and home to the dullest lot of lawmen west of the Mississippi.” Ray makes a wounded noise from somewhere.

The stranger tilts his head back and drains the rest of his water. Brad's eyes slide down, following the bobbing up-and-down motion of his Adam's apple. When the stranger resurfaces, the bright red of his moist lips contrasts with the dusty film that covers the rest of his face, his clothes. "I'm Nathaniel Fick," he says as Brad's eyes snap back up, "but call me Nate." He extends a hand.

Why this must be read: It's Christmas, and Yashiro is up to his matchmaking yet again. Normally I don't care for holiday fic, but this one works. In a fandom that is so very focused on the main couple, this fic stands out for solid writing and characterization. This story made me d'awww and laugh and even squee, so I recommend it for anyone who needs some sweetness in their day. It does have a sequel you can find on the author's profile, but IMO it isn't as good as this one. [Set after Act 110, but you just need to know about Mio.]

Why this must be read: Aside being a long casefic with fantastic characterization? A psychopathic stalker develops a thing for Ray Kowalski and goes about trying to make the people in his life 'respect' him. There's more than one victim, but the tearing down of Ray Vecchio is absolutely fascinating. Heartbreaking, yes, but fascinating. As is his recovery. But don't think that Vecchio's the only one to suffer in some manner; no one escapes this fic unscathed. That being said, however, it does indeed have a happy ending.
