Fandom: LIFE ON MARS (UK) Pairing: Sam/Gene Length: 2011 and 6713 Author on LJ: http://dakfinv.livejournal.com/ Author Website: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=lifein1973&keyword=dakfinv&filter=all Why this must be read: I hope it is OK to rec these stories together, but they are kind of like the two sides of a medaillon. So I think it is. This "family" of stories is great on h/c, dealing with one of the pair being hurt and the other one having to cope with it, and the fallout. Each of these fics is wonderful on its own but it's also lovely being able to compare how Sam and Gene deal with these situations differently, and how the other one reacts to that. Lots of angst and bad decisions made for the wrong reasons, and misunderstandings... And, to start it all off, whumpage! But most of all, feelings and care to make it all good in the end. Plus, Dakfinv is one of the "classic" authors in this fandom and never disappoints. Enjoy! Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: none Length: short Author on LJ: jael_lyn01Author Website: Jael at Idol PursuitsWhy this must be read: Just a fun read for the season. Jael’s stories are usually case-focused or relationship-based. But every once in a while she writes on the light side. So enjoy this little tidbit and then forage through the rest of her stuff if you want something a little more substantial. Happy Halloween. Fandom: LIFE ON MARS (UK) Pairing: Sam/Gene Length: 03:03 Author on LJ: http://culf.livejournal.com/ Author Website: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=lifein1973&keyword=culf&filter=all Why this must be viewed: I'm so happy I found this again! So I have to share it with you even if it's not video rec day... This video is extremely well-made (like all of culf's) but it's also very funny. And - a shameless slash vid! So yay! The use of the song "I touch myself" is brilliant, and the clips culf chose to accompany those lyrics are inspired and fitting! Absolutely believable cutting. Used to be on vimeo under another link but was deleted so I thought it was lost but I managed to find another posting. So here it goes: Sam touches himself

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS (UK) Pairing: Sam/Gene Length: 9,200 (in two parts) Author on LJ: http://mikes-grrl.livejournal.com/ Author Website: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=lifein1973&keyword=mikes_grrl&filter=all Why this must be read: Another one by Mikey... but she's written so much, and brilliant stuff, so I'm not ashamed. This follows on from the wonderful "Limbo" by Fawsley which has already been recced here, and tells how that story could continue... and does so in a very convincing way. It's warm and angsty (especially on Sam's part, of course) and has some great lines, and also deals with their first time... in a gruff, Gene-kind-of-way. But also caring. Well, it's just one of those fics I love and come back to time and again. I hope you enjoy. Deal Breaker, Part 1 Deal Breaker, Part 2Don't know whether I'll have the chance to post another rec later so this might be my last for this month. Unfortunately, I was busier than expected and couldn't post that regularly but I still hope this counts as fulfilling the quota. :-)

Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS Pairing: John/Rodney Length: 9,349 words Author on LJ: no Author Website: WraithBaitWarnings: canon character death, violence, suicidal thoughts Why this must be read: Author's Summary: "Get a grip, John. It was just a nightmare." A study of guilt and horror, this story delivers the chills as John is haunted by nightmares of shadowy figures and killing those closest to him. The atmosphere building skills of Lilac are superb; we get a blending of the dark shadows in nightmares and John's disturbed mind as well as the bright flashes of light in the scenes of Atlantis daily life for contrast. All of it culminates in a riveting story that analyzes human effort to deal with guilt, rightfully taken on or not, and a damn good horror story. ( Creepy Stuff )Machinery of Night

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Pairing: Buck/Chris Length: 5,150 words Author on LJ: charlottechillAuthor website: Author's stories on AO3Why this must be read: Because while it is seasonally appropriate, it's much more than a ghost story. Although set in an damp, dark, foggy version of our old west town, it is also a double love story that moves on the vital lynchpin of the entire series - that Chris Larabee tragically lost the wife he loved. And this influences all those he loves now and all those who love him. The story is told in first person by Buck. It is full of atmosphere and emotion, giving us insight into how long and how well Buck has loved Chris. In short, Buck, who we know as a braveheart of a character, fears his own end is presaged when he, and he alone, begins to see the ghost of Sarah Larabee... Fog swirls in eddies and flows like water. It's strange how the horse don't see to know she's there. Glancing right and left real quick, I step off the boardwalk and into the dirt. I walk toward her, expecting her to disappear again, but now she stays. I'm two feet away -- closer than I'd usually have gotten to her in life without a chaperone, an invitation, or a damned good reason, but she just stands there. She tilts her head, looking up at me, and her eyes... I'd forgotten what color they were, pretty brown like a calf's. It scares the hell out of me that I can see Chris's dead wife and he can't. Nobody ought to be seeing her, but if anybody can, it ought to be Chris.Death's Pretty Face

Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: none Length: 5600 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Gil Hale’s Fan Fiction Why this must be read: It brings back Tibbles, Gil’s opinionated cat who lives next door to the guys, just in time for Halloween. We learned in her previous stories, Tibbles to the Rescue and Meow Mail (both previously recced at CV) that Tibbles has priorities; chiefly looking after his stomach, although he’s not above some heroics. He admires Jim and doesn’t think much of Blair. So when the guys are asked to care for Tibbles and Blair is less than sympathetic to Tibbles’ gastronomic needs, he is ready to teach Blair a lesson in good manners. If you haven’t read the earlier stories, I suggest you go for the trio. They are fun and offer a more unusual outsider’s POV. Enjoy. Well, it's that time again to hand to keys over. I've had a ball, as usual. See you next time around.Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Jim/Blair Length: 6600 words Author on LJ: alysbasementAuthor Website: at ASR3 and Aly's Basement Why this must be read: A last bit of spookiness combined with the kind of crack you get when you eat too much Halloween candy. And that's exactly the position Blair finds himself in on Halloween night, all alone and waiting for Jim to come home. He's sure he hears something, and fortifies himself with chocolate in order to confront the boogie man. Brand new and written for the spook_me Multi-fandom Halloween Ficathon, give this a read and enjoy your evening. Brain Food by Alyjude (KF)--magician’s mantra: make an author’s day. My last rec for this month. *sobs* It's been loads of fun choosing things that I love and that other people might enjoy. I hope I managed to find something that suited you. Thanks for the comments and I'm going out with a decent bang, I think. If you like long, this is the place for you. I swear I lost well over ten days of my life reading my way through this, and I don't regret a minute of it. Fandom: Naruto Pairing: Many and several, including but not exclusively: Shiranui Genma/Namiashi Raidou, Inuzuka Tsume/Namiashi Raidou, Hatake Kakashi/OMC, Genre: M/M, F/F, M/F. Action, adventure, politics, drama, hurt/comfort – you name it, it's there. Length: Seriously massive ongoing RP. Author on LJ: NA Warnings: Graphic violence, graphic sex, however all stories are marked up separately with appropriate warnings. Author Websites: Community profile. Authors' Summary: Five years after the demon nine-tailed fox wrecked havoc on Konohagakure and was sealed inside the infant son of the Fourth Hokage, two years before the Uchiha Massacre, the village is rebuilding and growing again. The Sandaime Hokage is alive and well; Konohagakure is recovering from a long brutal war, the Kyuubi onslaught of five years ago, and the loss of the Yondaime; and the elite ninja of the future are the rising stars of today. This is Fallen Leaves, a story of the young people of Konoha past and the experiences that will shape their lives as part of the dark, unsavory Special Forces known as ANBU. Why this must be read: Anyone who has an interest in the older generation of the Narutoverse has probably asked themselves at some point, I wonder what all those guys were doing when they were younger. Here is your answer. This sprawling soup of plot and relationships, tension, violence and politics spans the years after the Kyuubi attack and before the show starts. It's comprised of numerous separate stories many of which, though all interlinked, can be read as stand-alones. The links below take you to the most useful places to start. Room for just one more October 31st fic... Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS Pairing: Bodie/Doyle Length: Short Story Author on LJ: magenta_blueAuthor Website: Magenta Blue's stories via PalelyloiteringWhy this must be read: Because this is halloween, in London, for Bodie and Doyle - there's something a little peculiar, a stakeout in an old building, and lemon curd sandwiches... *g* Magenta Blue has got a knack for characterisation - her original characters are just as alive as her lads, and all the other CI5 agents. She catches time and place perfectly too, you can feel London unfold around you as you read: see it, hear it, and sometimes shiver at it... *g* And because she's Magenta Blue, and they're our lads, you'll be smiling if not giggling before you get to the end. This is my last post for the month of October! I'd have liked to post a few more recs, but unfortunately that was not do be. I do hope you'll come check us out at theboysofsummer and on AO3, though. Fandom: BASEBALL RPF Pairing: Pudge Rodriguez/Maribel Rodriguez, Pudge Rodriguez/Nolan Ryan, Pudge Rodriguez/Ugueth Urbina, Pudge Rodriguez/Josh Beckett, Pudge Rodriguez/Justin Verlander Length: 73,488 Author on LJ: americanleaguerAuthor Website: americanleaguer's masterlist. Why this must be read: This fic is truly epic in every sense of the word. It tracks over twenty years in the life (and relationships) of Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, and highlights important or pivotal moments in his life. A friend described it as "basically like the biopic of Pudge Rodriguez' life," which I think sums it up perfectly. Catching Up feels epic in tone, structure, scope, and length. It feels almost cinematic. It's one of my favorite pieces by americanleaguer, and she's written a lot of things that I love. ( Excerpt )Catching Up

Sorry to be so extremely late but life was quite hard this month when the summons finally came...
Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: (Tom Riddle/Harry Potter, Minerva McGonagall/Pansy Parkinson) Length: (75,027 words) Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: SweetSorcery in AO3Why this must be read: This is a known and loved story, but one I couldn't resist waxing poeticaly about. A lyrical love story about love and second chanses that could change the world. While it hasa dreamy sometimes almost fairytale it is also an adult story to the full meaning of the world with amazing characterisation and wicked humor. A true masterpiece to the fandom and pairing and at my humble opinion the best one to start exploring said pairing. The greatest changes in history seem to occur in quick succession and are often set off by single, isolated incidents. Incidents such as a young witch's refusal to take the Dark Mark, one of Professor Binns' lessons in History of Magic given to a mixed sixth year class, and a very unlikely alliance based on courage and hope.( Read more... )http://archiveofourown.org/works/266699
