Fandom: POKÉMON Pairing: Gen Length: 5035 words Author on DW: mochamochaAuthor on AO3 & FFnet: mochawhip mochawhip | mochawhipAuthor Website: Fanfic Master ListWhy this must be read: Pokémon gameverse canon is somewhat notorious for being lax in developing its antagonists, but "Teacher, Preacher" develops Team Rocket in spades. The author doesn't hold any punches: each of the characters is depicted in a very harsh light, and their flaws are laid out for you to see. Just when you believe that they couldn't get any more despicable, however, Mocha sneaks up on you and, against all odds, manages to make every single character redeemable, sympathetic, and remarkably whole. All in all, this piece is a very nuanced study of the dynamics between the upper echelons of Team Rocket: the Boss, his Executives, and his young son, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who loves or is interested by Team Rocket, or antagonists in general. ( Excerpt: Four is a clean number, sharp and stable like a square. )" Teacher, Preacher" (can also be read on AO3 and FFnet)

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan Length: 3494 words Author on LJ: archaeologist_dAuthor Website: Masterlist and FFN ProfileWhy this must be read:Because this author wrote one Star Wars story for nine years, completing it last year. Because this story indicates the techniques that a long-time author explores, writing drabbles and ficlets and even epics through the years, each story illuminating a different facet of characterization or plot. This story is a PWP, written to a first line prompt: "I can explain." On a personal note, this author is about the first whose stories I read upon discovering the wonderful world of online fanfiction in 05. Way to go, D! I Can Explain

Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Arthur/Merlin, Arthur/Merlin/Gwen Length: 12,286 words Author on LJ: sam_storytellerAuthor Website: AO3 (under username copperbadge); Masterlist on DWWhy this must be read: Author's Summary: Arthur is king, and change is in the wind. I really like the Merlin characterization in this one. It shows a intelligent and clever man who works behind the scenes to support his king's rule and make sure this is Camelot's golden age. He's politically savvy and so like the Merlin who worked from the shadows for Camelot's greater good in the legends. And yet, his king and queen won't let him stay in the shadows. They outwardly praise him and gift him with precious objects. And in the quiet of the bedroom, they show their appreciation with both words and actions. The relationship between these three is just fantastic. It's a wonderful tripod of support between king, queen, and advisor. Arthur's relationship with Gwen is acknowledged and interwoven with the slash-y goodness of A/M to create a threesome that will just make you smile. Fandom: DEATH NOTE Pairing: Misa/Sayu Length: ~1200 Author on LJ: jenwryn and also used to be at jenwryn_fic, but I see that's now been purged Author Website: AO3 | Fanfiction.Net (no longer updated) | Fanlore | Dreamwidth, and I'm sure I've seen some other Jenwryn websites too, but I'm not finding them at the moment. Why this must be read:Jenwryn is a giant of the Death Note fandom, so it was difficult choosing just one story from Jenwryn's prolific works (a limit that I've personally set during this reccing session to give exposure to as many authors as possible). As She Is stuck in my mind long after I'd read it, and I ultimately chose it because of this memorable quality, because it shortly and sweetly encapsulates Jenwryn's writing style where fluff and Death Note somehow mesh perfectly, and because it is a Yuri pairing, very rare in the Death Note fandom. In this fluffy, sentimental story Misa falls deeply in love with Sayu while caring for her during a long illness... As She Is

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson Length: 2562 words Author on LJ:Unknown Author Website: Unknown Why this must be read:This gem is from the early days of the Sherlock BBC kink meme. The Kink Meme prompt was: Sherlock knows he's a difficult roommate; he also knows he's a difficult boyfriend and difficult boyfriends run a high risk of being dumped. He can't stop John from leaving him, but he can make it harder for other people to steal him away. I'd like to see paranoid, panicky, possessive Sherlock doing his best to stamp a virtual MINE sign on John: hickeys, wearing John's jumpers, having him wear Sherlock's scarf, buying matching watches/rings/bracelets, significant touching... Sherlock knows relationships end. It's what they do. He is determined that his and John's relationship won't. Possessive Sherlock is one of my biggest kinks. On the Necessity of Endings is a lovely, slightly dark character study of him and his John obsession. I adore Sherlock's checklist of the 5 main ways relationships end and the methodical and the just a bit not good way he deals with each of them. One of my all time favs. On the Necessity of Endings

Fandom: DEATH NOTE Pairing: Rem/Misa Length: ~23000 Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Fanfiction.Net | FictionPress.com | PhilTheTimeWizard on DeviantARTWhy this must be read:This novella-length fanfic is known in the Death Note fandom as the most epic treatment of the Rem and Misa pairing, a pairing that is mostly ignored by fans despite being (mostly) canon. This fanfic has a good plot, it is intelligent about bringing up issues that were largely side-stepped by canon and dealing with them in unexpected ways, and it's hilarious without that hilarity ruining the romantic aspects. I must warn you that it is (intentionally) a crack-fic, starting out crackiest in the beginning and gradually calming down the further you read. However, being a crack-fic adds humor to the story and rarely detracts from its quality in any way. This is the big, sweeping romance that Rem and Misa never really got in canon. And, if the way shinigami look in Death Note is too much of a turn-off for you, don't worry, the plot has a fix for that... The Perseverance of a Love Unchained
