Time flies when you're having fun. Seems like almost no time at all since I was last behind the wheel!

I seem to be leaning on AUs a lot this month; also on writers who have rarely, if ever, been recced here.

To begin -

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 40886 words
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: http://www.852prospect.org
Why this must be read: -

Set in a universe where sentinels and guides are known, Blair is an unbonded guide, a professor in the sentinel-guide unit at Rainier. One day, Blair's attention is drawn to a sentinel - Jim - being brought in in restraints.

I like stories that go in the opposite direction to fan - well, 'norm'. There are quite a lot of stories where Society considers sentinels more valuable, so guides have pretty well lost their autonomy, have to register and become little more than servants, with no other purpose than to ground their sentinel. In this story, the attempt to prevent that has left the sentinel liable to defer all the time to his guide's wishes, so that people are inclined to think that the sentinel has few, if any, rights; that they function more like trained pets than people with minds of their own.

I also like stories that show a very strong Blair. This story has that in spades. It's well written, well developed and incorporates an episode (which is always a bonus).

Hello! I'm Helen,[livejournal.com profile] hsv_fangirl driving the van once again for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
I have a variety of recs planned for February featuring our favorite Jedi lovers.

On to the first rec!

Fandom: STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE
Pairing: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi
Length: Word count: 993
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sydian
Author Website: NA
Why this must be read: Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan find comfort in
each other in the aftermath of Episode III. This an AU in which
Qui-Gon lived to train Anakin. Beautifully written emotional
hurt/comfort.

Qui-Gon never asks about him.

Once, on Senator Organa's ship, when the horror is still fresh on your mind
(Anakin, lying on the ground, burning with hatred, limbs severed; burning)
there's a pained look in his eyes as though he wants to ask but is afraid to
know. You look away from him then and focus on your breathing until the
memory - anakin burning burning I hate you burning - fades.

Qui-Gon never looks that way at you again.

02:55 pm Small Fandom Overview: His Dark Materials (focusing on daemons)
Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] kowaiyoukai! For this month, I've decided to focus on reccing the same AU in different fandoms. I have loved His Dark Materials crossovers and fusions for years, and being able to rec my favorites is a joy. His Dark Materials is a trilogy book series by Philip Pullman that consists of The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. A movie version of The Golden Compass was released in 2007 starring Dakota Blue Richards, Nicole Kidman, and Daniel Craig.

So this won't be a traditional overview post mainly because I want to cover the concept of daemons as opposed to the entire HDM world.

For the first daemon!AU this month, I've decided to start with what I've read most often--the one I keep coming back to because it's simply that fulfilling.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Length: ~8,300
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Spoilers through season 2
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone
Author Website:
Summary: They had always wanted to fly; John couldn't fly; Nioke flew for him.

Why this must be read: I can't honestly describe the impact this fic had on me. Trinityofone is an amazing author, but this fic is outstanding. The introduction of daemons ends up being a commentary on life in Atlantis, the Wraith, how Rodney views humanity, and how John deals with emotions. This fic is everything I love about SGA fandom in a nutshell.

The choices for John and Rodney's daemons are particularly interesting here. Actually, everyone's daemons were wonderfully chosen, and everyone is so perfectly in character, that this fic feels like a missing episode. This is, perhaps notably, one of the two daemon fusion fics I rec to people interested in the idea. In short: My favorite part was everything.

03:59 pm In Her Eyes by Laura_McEwan (Explicit)
Hello, my name is Nancys_Soul. I'll be driving the Crack_van for the month of February, the month of Love. The perfect month for Starsky and Hutch because they're all about LOVE. We'll start off with the guys and 'the love child'!
Fandom:STARSKY and HUTCH
Pairing:Starky/Hutch, Starsky/OFC, Hutch/OFC
Length:15238 words
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] lauramcewan
Author Website:http://www.hawksong.com/~lauramcewan/starskyhutch_index.php

Why this must be read:
Two friends, one woman, and a child who appears just as Starsky and Hutch realize the love between them. As you might imagine this causes a few problems, and a lot of angst. In Laura's own words :"I know kid fic isn't the most popular genre of slash fiction, but given how much these two guys slept around on the show, it's really not beyond the realm of belief to acknowledge that a child could certainly have been conceived at some point. This theme gave me the opportunity to explore it more." Now go read and enjoy her exploration into the realm of share and share alike!
