Well, folks, here’s my last rec for Star Trek Reboot for May, and I saved one of the best for last. I hope you’ve had as much fun discovering these works as I have had reccing them! Fandom: STAR TREK REBOOT/STAR TREK ORIGINAL SERIES Pairing: Kirk/Spock Length: 45k Author on LJ: bigmamagAuthor Website: On LJ and On AO3Why this must be read:With my now-known love of presumed-dead fics, what do you think one featuring actual death does to me? Yes, it gets my hurt/comfort bell ringing. This is not, however, a typical “deathfic,” at least not the way I define it, because, well, the dead person is brought back to life for starters, and the story goes on to not only fix that, but fix a few other things in Star Trek canon that were in need of it! Vidder: ViveAmnerisMusical Artist: "A Thousand Years" by Christina PerriLength: 4:44Vidder on LJ: UnknownVidder Website: UnknownWhy this vid must be viewed: This is the video that made me open to liking fanvids in general, and a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful portrayal of this pairing (a major OTP of mine). Once you've seen it, you won't be able to associate this song with anything but this timey-wimey couple, and even though the song was technically written for the "Twilight" saga (I know, I know), it seems like it could only have been written about them. - Mood: relaxed

Vidder: Waverleysteps Musical artist: Map of the Problematique, by Muse Length: 4:19 Vidder on LJ: Not known Vidder’s website: Not known Why this vid must be viewed: OK, I confess: I adore music vids. I love the way a different soundtrack can alter the way we see characters, or highlight the things we know in a different way. So I am relishing the chance to rec a few for Crackvan. This first uses a surprising choice of music – a track by Muse which is a fave of mine but not one that would automatically spring to mind for a fan vid. And yet it is perfect. It captures Jim’s paranoia and anxiety of the final episodes wonderfully, as does the superbly chosen clips and their editing. I defy anyone to watch it without feeling a growing sense of dread. And here’s a thought. The fast pace of this video, the quick edits, the well-chosen close-ups and the disturbing music show for me how TS could have looked under different directorial hands and in maybe a different time. Just as compelling, but darker and stronger somehow. If you don’t know this vid already, do please give it a try. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4QWf99EvC0

Vidder: Ladydragontl Musical Artist: TATU – “Not Gonna Get us” Length: 4:40 Vidder on LJ: not known Vidder’s website: not known Why this must be viewed: No-one can stop us Now that I love you They’re not gonna get us….. Another fast-paced vid with a fantastic choice of track. And I am in awe of the vidding techniques – flips, repeats, reversals, superimposition – as well as the clip choices themselves, that ladydragontl uses here. Masterly stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foXGMFnp54w

Vidder: Jaicen5 Musical Artist: AFI Length: 3:01 Vidder on LJ: jaicen5 Vidder Website: Jaicen5 - YouTube Why this vid must be seen: I could honestly have stuck a pin in and chosen whichever vid of Jaicen's it landed on - her work is simply gorgeous. She mixes technical expertise with music that suits each vid perfectly, and each and every vid gives you something new and lovely to wonder at. Coupled with her deep understanding of her subject matter, and you have vids as close to perfection as you're likely to get.
I finally chose Miseria Cantare (and oh! and the angst of having to re-watch so many *g*), because it's a joint project with another of my favourite artists - the fabulous Cloudless9193. If you don't know her work, you're in for such a treat!
Go watch, marvel, enjoy - it's three minutes of time you'll never regret spending *g*

Vidder: Waverleysteps Musical Artist: Queen/David Bowie – “Pressure” Length: 3:58 Vidder on LJ: not known Vidder’s website: not known Why this must be viewed: A much-loved Queen/Bowie track, and a great selection of angsty clips interwoven with warm, fuzzy ones showing the partnership we love. It’s the way these are blended together that for me makes this vid stand out. Plenty of action, plenty of warmth. Lovely stuff. Right, that’s it for me, folks. I’m outta here….. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmQv9Y2zxZA

Gosh - the month has flown past. This is my final rec on the van, and again I've gone with one of my favourite authors.
Before I get to the nitty gritty though, thanks so much to everyone who's commented on my efforts (bless you *g*), and also I can thoroughly recommend signing up to take the old jalopy out for a spin yourself - I've had more fun than I imagined, and trawling through the previous recs pages has made me realise how many stories and authors I still haven't read. Bliss! I'd also like to give you the link to the introductory post on the van for the Pros, which has got hard to access since LJ's last funny five minutes. It's brilliantly put together by phantomas.
Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS Pairing: Bodie/Doyle Length: 16700 words Author on LJ: callistosh65 Author Website: On AO3 Why this must be read: This is one of those wonderful fics that's just got the lot: passion and misunderstandings, angst, Bodie hurt and Doyle as the caregiver, wonderful dialogue, believable motives and emotions, and bedroom scenes that manage to be both hot and fun at the same time. And best of all, Callisto still manages to deliver the lads as they are on screen, bickering, bitching... them, warts and all.
Callisto's writing is always a pleasure, and this is one of her longer fics, written for the CI5 Box of Tricks Big Bang in 2010. If you haven't already read it, wait until you have a couple of free hours, curl up, and indulge yourself. Enjoy!

Vidder: Loki Musical Artist: Dear Euphoria - "Coming Down" Length: 3:17 Vidder on LJ: secretlytodreamVidder's Website: on YouTubeWhy this must be viewed:A delicately haunting song with a powerful grungy current that waves in and out of prominence really makes for a great choice for this Peter/Olivia/Alternate Olivia relationship study vid. The selection of scenes and quick cuts of them makes for a simple and beautiful vid that has a special kind of poise to it. Coming Down

Vidder: lastonthelist Musical Artist: Katy Perry - "Last Friday Night" Length: 2:48 Vidder on LJ: unknown Vidder's Website: on YouTubeWhy this must be viewed:When you think of Fringe it's easy to imagine angsty vids, action vids or even creepy vids because those are the types the show lends itself to, but a fun vid not so much. You've got a completely unexpected song (which is never the less an amusing reference to Fringe having aired in the Friday night death slot) and yet the clip choices derived from the numerous drinking and experimental drugs related parts of the show make it work, alongside some clever editing of the more light hearted moments. This is why this vid is so excellent, it creates a cross universe multi-pairing party scenario that fits together so well, feeling truly upbeat, and just leaves me with a big grin whenever I've watched it. Last Fringe Night

Vidder: hollywoodgrrl Musical Artist: Black Eyed Peas - "Boom Boom Pow" Length: 3:33 Vidder on LJ: hollywoodgrrlVidder's Website: sync_slayingWhy this must be viewed:It's fast paced and packs a punch with so much of the big moments of the first two seasons condensed into it, not just action but the emotional too in parts - this vid has a real energy to it that makes it full of awesome. Boom Boom Pow

Vidder: maitikaHan Musical Artist: Les Friction - "String Theory" Length: 3:56 Vidder on LJ: unknown Vidder's Website: on YouTubeWhy this must be viewed:Because it's a rather epic vid for the rather epic tangled relationships S3 and S4 of Fringe gave us. It's also good to see a shippy video that is giving equal consideration to multiple pairings that would generally be seen as conflicting - in this case Peter & Olivia, Olivia & Lincoln, Alt!Olivia & Peter and Alt!Olivia & Lincoln - and this does it particularly nicely in a touching manner. Love cannot fit inside a theory

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: about 9700 words Author on LJ: unknown Author’s website: St. Cloud was written less than ten years ago (I think), but it's now rather difficult to find online. I was able to locate Lola's works only through the Wayback Machine, here. Why this must be read: Because this is an S&H classic which, I was amazed to discover, has not been recced here before. I will state, upfront and unapologetically, that it’s a tear-jerker, and one of the best. In this story the boys are separated – not by death, but by duty and love, and that, in my mind, makes it all the more heartbreaking. But Lola is a great writer; even while writing such sadness and pain, she does not leave either her characters or readers without some hope in the end. It's brilliant. Even if you’re not usually into stories of this type, give this one a try. St. Cloud

Vidder: Ancasta Musical Artists: Clarence Clemons & Jackson Browne Length: 4:48 Vidder's Website: Ancasta has a master list of her work on her LJ page; her videos are on YouTube. Why this must be viewed: because it’s really cute and fun. It has a ton of great moments from the show set to a bouncy song (with Clarence Clemons, no less), and really captures the essence of Starsky and Hutch. You're a Friend of Mine
|
Vidder: endlosesblau Musical Artist: Eberg - "Inside Your Head" Length: 3:52 Vidder on LJ: unknown Vidder's Website: on YouTubeWhy this must be viewed:This has a quirky song choice that is interestingly fitting for early S4 Lincoln Lee, who in essence isn't who he used to be with the timeline shift and is at a juxtaposition to the more out going Alt!Lincoln we knew from Season 3. Also this vid is a bit of a rarity as most vids for the Lincoln are shippy instead of solely character based and/or otherwise focused on his alternate self much more, so this is a nice find for those who appreciate amberverse Lincoln. a little freaked out

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC Pairing: None Length: 61486 words Author on LJ: Non on LJ as far as I can tell Author Website:The_Circus on AO3Why this must be read: Sherlock BBC fandom is awash in post-Reichenbach stories. This is one of the best and most original. I was so happy it was finished in time for me to rec it. It is BAMF Doctor John rebuilding his life after the fall. He pretty much adopts an entire community. The Montague Street Doctor also has a truly beautiful depiction of John and Sherlock’s friendship. I adore all the characters The_Circus created for John’s new world. But John’s old world can never really leave him behind. The Montague Street Doctor

Vidder: itsforscience Musical Artist: The Glitch Mob - Between Two Points Length: 2:14 Vidder on LJ: josiemus_primeVidder's Website: AO3 page | on YoutubeWhy this must be viewed: Absolutely mesmerizing. I love what itsforscience has done with the clips to weave them into a whole - considering that much of it is blurry concert footage, what itsforscience made of it is stunning. Quite frankly, I couldn’t choose between these two vids. I’m intrigued by the way two people can take the same song and the same film, and create two completely different videos. Vidder: Majestic klo Musical Artist: Imagine Dragons Length: 4:05 Vidder on LJ: None, as far as I can tell. Vidder’s Website: Majestic kloWhy this must be viewed: Majestic klo creates a really interesting and lengthy Marvel comics based intro (listen carefully to the audio), and includes clips from Thor and the Iron Man films as well as the Avengers. I like the way the film clips are matched to the music, the way the vid concentrates more on the characters than on the action, and there are some very professional looking segues between clips. Majestic klo’s interpretation of the heavy gasp portion of the song is particularly amusing. Radioactive by Majestic kloVidder: Huush95 Musical Artist: Imagine Dragons Length: 3:05 Vidder on LJ: None, as far as I can tell. Vidder’s Website: Huush95Why this must be viewed: In contrast to Majestic klo, Huush95 takes the same song but chooses different clips from The Avengers, adds clips from X-Men 3, and creates a completely different vid. There’s an interesting symmetry to some of the scenes: Iron Man raises his hands, then Magneto does the same; Wolverine makes an amazing leap, then the Hulk makes a similar leap; one set of heroes takes a stand, and in the following scene…well, you get the gist. Hello, everyone! I've enjoyed sharing all these great Naruto fics with you for the past month, and receiving comments and messages from readers and authors alike. I hope every fan has found at least one new fic to read, and maybe even enticed someone who doesn't know Naruto canon to give a fic a try! I've saved one of my favorite fics and its sequels for my final rec. I read aishuu's first installment when it was new on my flist, and to my delight, it has sparked several sequels in the following years! I'd like to end my month of driving the anime and manga crack-van with a fitting bang, so here it is! Fandom: NARUTO Pairing: ensemble gen with various side pairings Length: 15 fics, 21,145 words Author on LJ: aishuuAuthor Website: quillofferingsWhy this must be read: What starts as a short and powerful oneshot expands to a series of vignettes that show us how Itachi as the Godaime could change Konoha and the characters we know. Each fic focuses on a different canon character. Some are funny, some serious, some sad, but all are a good read. My personal favorites are the moving Kakashi chapter, the hilarious Iruka chapter, and the Mikoto chapter for a chilling dose of fandom fix-it. Warning: mention of off-screen rape in fic 7. [set before the series begins, spoilers for volume 43/Shippuuden ep 141 (the truth of the Uchiha massacre)] tag for Itachi Hogake Verse by aishuu

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Obi-Wan/Padmé Length: 906 words Author on LJ: pronkerAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read:It's a carefully-paced, gently-moving dreamstate fic, which is erotically tender without becoming graphic. It leaves a lot to the imagination, and suggests both physical and emotional dimensions of closeness, remembered and brought into the present. A must for any Obidala shipper. I Didn't Know Just What Was Wrong With Me

Vidder: Sparralex Musical Artist: Gotye - "Somebody that I Used to Know" Length: 3:59 Vidder on LJ: n/a Vidder's Website: on YouTubeWhy this must be viewed:A very convincing AU where Merlin and Morgana have known each other since they were kids. The editing was really well done, I particularly loved how the scenes were placed together and the pacing. This was a great song to illustrate both the tension between the characters and it also highlighted some of the choices they made within the series within the context of this AU. Definitely changed my perceptions of Merlin and Morgana and I left the vid with so many feelings about them as a potential pairing. Somebody that I Used to Know
