Hi there.  I'm back behind the wheel of the van for Men's Tennis RPS.  It's Wimbledon Time so I admit I may be a bit distracted during the early part of this month.  This is the overview I wrote in January 2012.  Not too much has changed in terms of the players involved, though I will update the facts once Wimbledon is over.

Fandom: MEN'S PROFESSIONAL TENNIS RPS
Pairings: Novak Djokovic/Andy Murray, Roger Federer/Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic/Andy Murray/Roger Federer/Rafael Nadal
Length: 3789
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant
Author Website: halotolerant on AO3
Why this must be read: The way men's tennis has been promoted of late is by talking about the "Big 4" (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray - usually said in that order based on # of majors won), as they are generally at the end of the big tournaments.  The natural friendships and rivalries among the four, each different in its own way, are what makes their matches so fascinating.  That this is the only fic I know to actually turn that into a foursome would already be enough for inclusion.  All of these configurations come through in the story, which is basically Rafa volunteering his and Roger's expertise to aid Novak and Andy in their sexual issues.  The line used in the summary truly does say a lot:

“You play perfect backhand first time you try?” Rafa had said. “No. Nobody do. Roger maybe, nobody else,” and he’d grinned. “Like anything, you need practice, need coach...I can show you, if you want.”

Woo-hoo – I’ve got the van again! Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] byslantedlight for some great recs last month – I’ll try and keep it going.

Okay, I’ve filled the tank, checked the tyre pressure and we’re all ready to go, so buckle up and enjoy the ride! Mirrors, signal, mirrors, manoeuvre – and we’re wheel-spinning away from the kerb – yippee!

Our first stop is in London, not very far from the CI5 building as it turns out. Here we find Bodie and Doyle setting up a sniper’s rifle. Who are they after? Read on to find out…

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 1477 words
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: on AO3
Why this must be read:
This is a fantastic little fic, short and punchy, and it gives us a great insight into the lads’ feelings for one another. Here’s Bodie, willing to take the shot because it doesn’t matter as much to him, and Doyle, reluctant but determined to do it and taking comfort from Bodie. Doyle's snarkiness and Bodie's more phlegmatic attitude are illustrated in this little snippet:

“It doesn’t seem right,” he said. The words forced themselves out of his mouth and immediately he wished he had closed his teeth over them and let them remain unsaid.

“Lots of things in this world aren’t right,” Bodie said. “But we have to deal with them. No one said life was fair.”

“Philosopher Bodie?” Doyle sneered. “Shall I call you Einstein?”

“He wasn’t a philosopher. He was a theoretical physicist.”

Lovely! Enjoy the twist at the end, too - I didn't see this one coming, I admit *g* And even though I now know the twist, the characterisation is so good that I can read this again and still maintain the wow factor at the end. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

(PS - sorry for the late start - I couldn't post!)

Hi, Bluewolf here taking charge of the Sentinel van (or should that be truck?) for July. I'm starting with
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 16240 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nat_1228 (but hasn't been updated since Nov 2011)
Author Website: Jaguar's Jungle also at AO3
Why this must be read: - After the dissertation disaster, Blair decides to visit a friend in Oklahoma before going to the Academy... and the friend is a tornado chaser.

Nat has really done her homework here; it's very easy to imagine yourself in the van with Blair as he experiences the terror and satisfaction involved in the job of chasing tornadoes.

I was surprised to discover that none of Nat's stories have been mentioned here; she's a good writer who has written quite a lot of stories over the years.

09:57 pm can't be hateful, gotta be grateful - HalfFizzbin (PG-13)
Hello [livejournal.com profile] crack_van and welcome to this month's trip through Teen Wolfdom! My name is Fia and I will be your dealer driver in July, happy to supply you with a new load of previously unrecced goodies. I specialize in long fics and AUs, so expect to find plenty fics that fit one or (even better) both those characteristics alongside some others too, of course. I'll try to spice things up with some non-Stiles/Derek, too!

Buckle your seatbelts, please keep your hands inside the vehicle at all times and away we go!

Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Derek/Stiles
Length: 6260 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: AO3
Summary: "Be cool, Dad, we've decided to con Grandma." (Or, the one where the Stilinski men drag Derek to Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma's and she gets the right wrong idea.)
Why this must be read: I thought I'd start us off easy. This is in essence a simple fic, yet for some reason I keep going back to it for rereads, mostly because the characterisation is sublime, for all characters involved.

On top of that it's got a great Stiles-Sheriff bond and an excellent Derek voice, perfectly balanced on that line of having grown into being an Alpha but still being his awkward self. Plus, I'm a sucker for a badass grandparent OC, not to mention one of my favourite tropes: pretend boyfriends!

So, you never told me you were going to marry Aladdin. )
