Summary: Mixed up luggage and an undeclared exotic pet present a mystery even Douglas can't solve. Enter Sherlock Holmes.”

Why this must be read: A great example of a popular crossover. This crossover combo is popular thanks to a certain actor playing the leads in both series, although the characters are polar opposites in charisma, intellect and self- esteem. This fic exploits that contrast for comedy casefic value: Sherlock is on the case of an undeclared passenger on MJN Air, will this solve or worsen Cptn. Crieffs troubles?  Helps if you’ve heard the Cabin Pressure shows, to appreciate just how well the authors write in the audio drama screenplay format, capturing each characters voice and social quirks perfectly.  Holmes fans unfamiliar with the Cabin Pressure series can still enjoy it though, as casefic with a novel format and plot detours [especially if you have a peek at the CP fandom overview first!].  The deft use of banter is the best part of this fic imo, teasing out relationship dynamics between the two worlds in a way that highlights why each is so likable.

Excerpt: ARTHUR [speaking over Douglas]: Martin, there's this BRILLIANT chap; he solves mysteries and chases bad guys and all sorts of things…Oh! you should read his blog. This chap—He could help you!

Fandom: MEN'S PROFESSIONAL TENNIS RPS
Pairing: Juan Martin del Potro/David Nalbandian
Length: 18,200
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ladyrocketdale
Author website: [livejournal.com profile] isabeautifulday
Why this must be read: I had a plan initially as to how the fics should be presented... then realized it'd likely make more sense to present interests that came from this past Wimbledon.  Besides the obvious regarding Djokovic/Murray, the other note was "what about Delpo?".  The truth is there isn't much written about him - and what there is I cannot rec for various reasons - but there is this one rather recent story, written for RPF Big Bang, that really seemed to hit the right notes.  This writer is better known within football fandom, an influence that is felt in this somewhat supernatural story.  The fic is about how Juan Martin can read David Nalbandian's mind... which is actually a scary place to be, given this is a once-great player who might be best known now for a meltdown that led to a linesman getting bloodied.  I realize Nalby might be enough reason to turn people away from reading but the story works quite well with the imperfections of both of these players.

We're on the road today, somewhere up North initially. The job has been terrible and the consequences are almost unthinkable, with our lads taking ever more chances.

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 7602 words
Author Website: on AO3
Why this must be read:

This is a very grim and gritty fic. It focuses on the relationship between Bodie and Doyle, played out in less than salubrious surroundings with a cabaret of low-lifes who provide a certain element of comedy , although unintentionally. The description of a totally-focused Bodie disposing of a local bad lad in an irritated, absent-minded fashion is a joy. I like it because it is our rough tough lads trying to come to grips with something else, and as usual, the job gets in the way of their personal lives.

Here, have a clip:
They were staring at each other, each thinking of something other than the job.

"How're you doing?" asked Doyle.

"Fine."

"What do you want?"

It was an honest question and it got an honest answer. "I want to fuck you."

Amused and pleased, Doyle quirked an eyebrow. "Whenever you like." He felt a sudden immense cheer. He wanted to sing.

But will it all go okay? You'll have to read it to find out!

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 24950 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lky but it hasn't been added to since April 2011
Author Website: http://www.truthtrek.com/lky/
Why this must be read: - There's an arson case, and Jim's grandfather visits Cascade... and he knows the owner of the burned building.

Ostensibly a story about the arson, this story has several levels and sub-plots, all neatly interwoven, and some nicely convincing original characters. A fascinating read.

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch
Pairing: none
Length: N/A

Why this must be seen:

I am ever in awe of artists who can create visual magic with nothing more than paper and pencil, and [livejournal.com profile] magic_moni certainly fits in that category. Well, I suppose I should be accurate: she uses charcoal and pastels, too ;) "Saving Hand," done in charcoal and chalk on brown paper, is a gorgeous rendering of a moment from "Shootout," where a fiercely protective Hutch watches over an injured Starsky. Intense and emotionally charged, it showcases Moni's ability to capture, not just the likenesses, but also the personalities of these men—she draws Starsky and Hutch as we see them with our eyes and in our hearts.

Moni also occasionally posts 'unfinished stages' of her drawings, giving us some insight into her creative process. The one for "Saving Hand" doesn't have any commentary, but it's still very interesting to see the progression of an artWIP. But don't take my word for it—go take a look-see for yourself :)
