09:47 am Fandom Overview: Rise of the Guardians
Hi folks! This is my first time driving the van, and I’m going to be doing so for the “Small & Miscellaneous Fandom” or “Monthly Featured Fandom” for Rise of the Guardians. Before taking it out for a spin though, it’s always good to inspect your new vehicle, so here’s a fandom overview. Since this’s my first time behind the wheel and I'm pretty new to fandom in general (pretty much started this April!), any guidance you care to give me throughout my month would be appreciated. ☺

Heyas, [livejournal.com profile] arsenicjade here for Avengers-movie 'verse this go 'round. I'd love to give you some comprehensive plan for what this month is going to look like, but honestly? Um, Clint's my boy, h/c's my thing, I like strong ladies, so look for that stuff and for me to be kind of all over the place, otherwise.

Fandom: Avengers (2012)
Pairing: Clint/Bruce
Length: ~29k

Why this must be read:

Spoiler:
Coulson dies in this fic as he does in the movie, and stays dead.
What's hidden in that sentence is the exact reason why this fic shouldn't work for me. In fact, by all rights, it should be triggery for me.

Instead, Curiously has written what is probably one of the best fics I've ever encountered about grief, change, making choices, and moving forward. Hir prose is clever and often funny, casual in a way that matches the pace of the fic. Her characterizations are well-drawn, and full-bodied, as are the relationships between characters. And her POV voice is just plain amazing.

There is a kid in this fic, she is important, but she is also a kid, and a source of conflict and fear and all sorts of real-life reactions to a child. She never takes over the story to its detriment, which is a very hard thing to accomplish when writing in a child.

Basically, this is just a hella smart piece, and you should check it out.

Why this must be read:

Author Summary:

Jack didn't forget anything. He lost everything.

It set him down a different path than the one the Moon had intended. A darker, more violent one.

First stop on my crack-van trip is my second favorite RotG fic (I'm saving my most favorite for the end of the month). The stories I like best tend to be long form, and this is no exception. It's a great speculation on how the RotG characters would act if things had worked out differently - specifically what would happen if the innocent, fun-loving Jack from the film were put into a series of situations in his 300 years alone which would drive most people insane, and *then* he met the Guardians. This work may not be everyone's cup of tea, as it does include attempted rape and sexual situations with dubious consent, but the recovery story (played out further in two subsequent works, "Shadows Wake" and "Vindicated") is a great triumph of love and patience over horrible experiences. One of the many little things I like about this fic is how Jack is a BAMF, a theme which is only lightly alluded to in the film and deserved much more explanation, which Kayasurin does excellently.

If you're not already familiar with the fandom, this is still a fascinating study of someone's descent into madness as a form of self-protection, and the beginnings of his climb back out.
