Why this must be read:

This fic impresses upon the reader the debilitating nature of depression and the truly amazing strength of the will to recover and move forward. Written in short scenes, this is the story of Padmé's grief and guilt in the wake of the loss of her husband and children at the end of ROTS.

Subject: Frozen Winter by IlloustriousTaco (Teen?)
Fandom: Rise of the Guardians
Pairing: Jack/Pitch, Jack/Bunny, bits of North/Tooth, Pitch/Sandy
Length:
Author Website: AO3

Why this must be read:
Author Summary:
When Pitch Black happened up on something wondrous, the birth of a new spirit, he knew he had to interfere. When he realized that this creature was the blood of his oldest nemesis, he knew he had to turn him into his Fearling Prince. And if he didn't quite get what he wanted... well, his new pet would still be quite useful against his ancient enemies.

This one starts off as a classic "Pitch got to Jack first", and in this case he turns him into Jokul Frosti, Pitch's Fearling Prince. But Aster can't just let a child suffer in the hands of Pitch.

[livejournal.com profile] blueraccoon, you wanted more Blackice, well here's a nice one. This story might not be everyone's cup of tea, as there are a couple scenes with mostly non-consensual sex and references to mpreg. What I really like though is that even though this story has its dark moments, it's hopeful overall and has a somewhat happy ending. It also shows that even at his weakest, Jack is still a BAMF. There's also a sequel with lots more Jackrabbit.

The author rates this work as Teen, but with the references to non-con sex I'd probably rate it Mature.

Why this must be read: Well I am not much for kids and CI5 but what if one of our lads were the child and the other wasn't? Ellis Ward explores just that with a bit of magic. This story seemed so real, I could see it unfold in my mind. This is in my top ten, who'd a thought a kid story could make it in.

Just a snippet to tantalize the thoughts . . . )

06:09 pm The Faith Trilogy by Gabrielle Lawson (PG)
Fandom: STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Pairing: None
Length: 185,810 words (total)
Author Website: The Edge of the Frontier or Fanfiction.net
Summary: Doctor Bashir, marooned for over six months, is discovered by the Enterprise. Starfleet counted him dead. Section 31 made sure of that. Can he get his life back?

Why this must be read: One thing that intrigued me about DS9 was the idea of Section 31, but the show didn't really show the possible ramifications of such an organization existing - it was touched on, but kind of abandoned. This trilogy takes (in my opinion) a more realistic viewpoint on what they would have done to Bashir after they attempt to recruit him. It also lets us see how other characters in the ST universe would react if they found about about Section 31's existence.

Fandom: due South
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Vecchio
Length: 1692 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] china_shop
Author Website http://china-shop.crocolanthus.com/ Also on AO3

Why this must be read:
Yet more incredibly sweet F/V - anything by china_shop is worth reading and right now I am living with a small cat at the 'curiosity killed' stage. There is something adorable about Vecchio hunting for a kitten, with his wooly hat on, sniping at Fraser, while a world of UST is going on between him and Benny. And Dief, staying home to read Alexander Dumas... Funny, cute and feel good. Made me feel happy to read.

11:13 pm Officer Down by Rebelcat (R)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: about 7000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] myrebelcat
Author's website: here
Why this must be read: It's by the wonderful Rebelcat, who cautions her readers that the story won first place in Me & Thee’s “Make Hutch Hurl” contest.  Hutch’s emetic distress isn’t even the worst of it, though.  Come one, you really want to know why Hutch is puking all over, don't you?  Even though it will likely make you wince and go “ouch,” “Officer Down” will also make you laugh, a lot.  And Rebelcat has the boys down pat, even in this rather, um . . . unusual situation.
