Fandom: WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE Pairing: Gen, pre-Cecil/Carlos Length: wordcount 6,884 Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: stories on AO3; DevilishKurumi on Tumblr Warnings: police brutality, hurt/comfort Notes: spoilers for episode 3, “Station Management” Why this must be read: Shortly after arriving in Night Vale, Carlos runs afoul of the authorities. Good thing that afterwards, one of the locals is willing to clean him up and offer advice. When he wakes up again, it’s still dark, and Cecil is sitting on the other side of the bed, back propped against the wall and legs crossed, playing Angry Birds on his phone. Carlos can’t help but smile at that, because it’s just one more normal thing about the sharp-toothed radio host that he’d never have expected before this.
“You can probably think again,” Cecil says, as though he'd known exactly when Carlos would be up, “If you start feeling a migraine come on, though, put on some daytime television until the pain subsides.” Over the course of this prickly story, Carlos realizes that life in a police state requires a mix of black humor, pragmatism, and compromise ... and how lucky he is to have Cecil on his side (even if the staring is a little creepy). “don’t trust the air you breathe” on AO3

Fandom: due South Pairing: Benton Fraser/Victoria Metcalfe Length: 10,524 words Author on LJ: not that I know of Author on AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/users/zabira Why this must be read: Because it is such an insightful look Victoria, and her feelings for Fraser and how the circumstances of their lives meant nothing good could ever come of that meeting at Fortitude Pass. Victoria's Secret gave us his perspective but very little of hers, and this fills in some gaps about her life in a way I find totally convincing. Here they are two people who do love each other, but by the time they meet it's already too late for a happy ending. A police officer and an armed robber? How was that EVER going to end well? So they have this intense connection, and all they can do with it is hurt each other. She's the villain of the episodes (albeit a nuanced one) but here we get a glimpse of Fraser maybe not being his best self with a vulnerable woman - he's so blown away by his reaction to her that he loses sight of where the balance of power lies between them. It reminds me of that thing Paul Haggis said, that they didn't consummate their relationship at Fortitude Pass: " No, I've always believed that their connection was much deeper than that. Which made Fraser's betrayal that much worse -- resulting in his fear of women. He couldn't face what he did, and that shame manifested itself as fear -- which we all took to be comic -- but was, in truth, paralyzing." (It is the subject of another, quite different post, how that also reads as queer, and we needn't all ascribe to Paul Haggis's view, but it casts plenty of scenes in quite a different light, doesn't it?)
I love this glimpse of a darker side of Fraser through Victoria's eyes . It doesn't change who he fundamentally is, but he CAN make mistakes like anybody else and this fic makes me sympathise with Victoria and love him more both at the same time.

Fandom: WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE Pairing: Cecil/Carlos Length: wordcount 1,776 Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Dreamwidth blog; stories on AO3Warnings: Profanity, dirty talk Notes: Tiny spoiler for “First Date” (ep. 27) Why this must be read: New episode tomorrow (*does the dance of mingled joy and trepidation*)! Aside from learning more about the goings on in Night Vale, this means we get to listen to Cecil talk, which for many fans is no small part of the show’s appeal, so in honor of our euphonious narrator, I’m going to recommend a few stories that focus on his voice. Not long ago, Cecil Baldwin recorded a special message thanking Unf-ck Your Habitat for a group donation made to Welcome to Night Vale by that blog’s followers (link available in the story’s notes). Naturally, hearing the Voice of Night Vale drop multiple F-bombs led to much flailing and keysmashing in the fandom ... and this fic, in which Carlos gets a charge out of hearing his boyfriend use language that would violate Federal law if it were broadcast. "My darling Carlos," Cecil says, with a lovestruck sigh, as he laces his fingers into Carlos's. "You're so goddamn smart."
Carlos tries to hide his reaction, not that Carlos really knows what that reaction is. Cecil has never actually sworn at — or maybe it's more appropriate to say towards — Carlos before, and Carlos doesn't know what to think about it. The sound of those horrible words in Cecil's beautiful voice does something to him, something that he can't explain. It's completely unorthodox, being, well, excited about the prospect of hearing Cecil swear like that.
Then again, orthodoxy is antithetical to the pursuit of true science. Carlos isn't sure if that's good reasoning or a poor excuse. “The FCC Won't Let Me Be” at AO3; multiple podfic versions linked in the story’s notes

Fandoms: FRINGE Characters/Pairings: Alternate!Olivia Dunham/Alternate!Charlie Francis/Alternate!Lincoln Lee Length: 32559 words Author on LJ: eretriaAuthor Website: on Ao3Why this must be read:Because this is 30k+ words of well considered, angsty and even sciencey where required, build up to the threesome featured. This fic also fills in a number of gaps in canon like how the other alt!team members learn about the news Liv received in the S3 episode 'Immortality' and about Charlie's background over there. It's a little bit casefic that is reminiscent of the S2's 'What Lies Below' but mostly an interesting delve into the dynamics of the team members following the changes for Liv in early S3, with a good focus on Charlie as part of that. Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Sam/Al, mentions Al/Tina and Tina/Gushie Length: 8,000 Author on LJ: gardendoorAuthor Website: AO3 ProfileWhy this must be read:I thought to myself, "I should rec something fluffy after that last one," but then I thought, "No, really what I need to post is MORE ANGST." Here is the finest, and the angstiest iteration of Sam Leaps Into Someone in the Project fic I've ever found. It doesn't pull a lot of punches in terms of Al's personality, or what he's like to work with, but does manage to be sympathetic and a little optimistic. It is also a nice look at Sam's daughter, Sammy Jo, and has some really sweet h/c. Also ANGST. Shade in Hell

Fandom: WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE Pairing: Cecil/Carlos Length: wordcount 1,875 Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: mystikdragon on Tumblr; stories on AO3Warnings: Masturbation, voice kink Notes: Set after “First Date,” no spoilers Why this must be read: Here’s another story in which Carlos appreciates his boyfriend’s voice, this time while listening to a broadcast. It was warm as melted butter, Carlos had always known that. But now he’d kissed Cecil, knew the faint taste of the mouth that was behind that voice, and for some reason that changed everything
...
Cecil’s voice had featured in a fantasy or two or Carlos’s before; just an echo of his voice in Carlos’s ear, murmuring filthy things, sighing and gasping with —
That – wasn’t a fantasy.
Those were sounds that Cecil was actually making; a tiny, hitching sigh, let out on a soft moan, broadcast over the slightly grainy Wal-mart radio in Carlos’s living room. “Tuning In On You” on AO3

Fandoms: FRINGE Characters/Pairings: Alternate!Olivia Dunham, Olivia Dunham Length: 877 words Author on LJ: anivadAuthor Website: http://www.whoaisnotme.netWhy this must be read:The Fringe fandom tends to do gender in fics in the form of bodyswaps or temporary gender switch sometimes, but this ficlet is the only one I've read so far Fringe-wise dealing with the idea one of the characters could be transgender. It is an interesting look at both Olivia's in the light of that idea, which packs a lot into its brief space. The Road Not Taken
