Fandoms: UNCHARTED Characters/Pairings: Chloe Frazer/Nathan Drake Length: ~ 600 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: on FanFiction.netWhy this must be read:It's not hard to imagine the scenario this short ficlet paints, that Chloe is used to people making assumptions about her based on her looks and has in return gotten used to exploiting that when it suits her. What I like about this is it takes a small moment from canon about her expected behaviour - the kind of behaviour that is only vaguely implied in canon once but the assumption of which in fannish circles does seem to often lead to slut shaming of her character sadly - and expands on it to show that kind of thing wasn't something she liked despite its usefulness, because it meant she has been subject to sexism of which she was inured to. It also highlights the decency in Nate as a character and how they were good together, an unusual angle to be explored as fandom doesn't have much happening for this pairing. Fandom: Fairy Tales: The Little Mermaid Pairing: Ariel/Eric Length: 3K words Author Website: at AO3 Why this must be read: How difficult is it to live in a place that is so foreign to what you know? Ariel finds out as she attempts to adjust to the terran world she's chosen. She takes great delight in learning about Eric's universe, but at the same time she has some special needs to help her transition. Thus, the palace servants' tongues are wagging about how the new princess bathes only in fresh seawater and sleeps in a hammock on the balcony . And as Erik watches her gradually change, becoming more gaunt and melancholy, he wonders whether love is enough to maintain their happily ever after. Fandom: SUITS Pairing: Harvey/Donna Length: 1190 Author on LJ: not that I know of Author Website: AO3 profileWhy this must be read: I don't think anything other than "how Harvey and Donna get off at work" can convey this fic better. She can't remember how it started, just one more shared ritual they have no one else will ever understand. In the beginning, she would slide her panties all the way off and conceal them in a desk drawer, but it's easier to just push them to the side, let her fingers work their way underneath until she can feel how hot she is, how wet, hardly even started and she's slick and ready, could probably get off in two minutes if she could get her fingers inside. Stuck here behind her desk, all she can do is tease, her right hand concealed in her lap, fingertips just brushing her clit, and her left tapping away on the keyboard as quick as ever. She pauses only for a moment, to buzz Harvey, and goes back to work, her face giving nothing away. Ritual

Good morning, I'm pronker and let's back out of the driveway for our farewell Star Wars tour, savoring the ride every parsec of the way. A quote from my first time reccing, years ago: "As a fan of gen, het and slash and just about every genre you can think of, I hope to offer fun stuff from drama to character study to PWPs." So, off we go with a rewrite of the prequels, in novel form. Fandom: STAR WARS Length: ~148000 words Characters: Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Padmé, Nute Gunray, Yoda, Count Dooku, Jango Fett, Asajj Ventress, other prequel characters Author on LJ: There doesn't seem to be one. Author Website: FFN ProfileWhy this must be read:Think tight writing, exploration of the motives of the Neimoidians, Dooku's labyrinthine plots and his use of Asajj Ventress in a way you'd not thought of, and a Padmé whose political ambitions take her to a level with which Anakin strives to keep up, and you've got the general thrust of the story. Body horror explodes into reality in this story, as does humor, while the prose will captivate and highlight the visuals we all have from seeing the films, and make them darker. A long winter's evening or two will be well spent in reading. Fandom: THE X-FILES Pairing: Dana Scully/Fox Mulder Length: 4,000 words Author on LJ: sophia_helixAuthor Website: Author's page at GossamerWhy this must be read:The author calls this "a thematic sequel" to Night Touch, which I recced here a couple of years ago. While she says it can be read simply as a post-ep to "En Ami," I think this story makes more emotional sense if they are read sequentially. If you are the kind of MSR reader who likes traditional romance a là Paula Graves etc., you might want to skip them both. However, I think this incisive story perfectly captures the emotional fall-out from that seventh season episode. Her characterization of Dana Scully is particularly insightful, but she's got Mulder nailed down, too. Read Contours

Hail and farewell! I'll be driving for Highlander, this last trip. I've chosen some of my favorites, that I could find. After this year's hlh_shortcuts fic appears, I will undoubtedly have new ones to add. I'm beginning with the first author I read in Highlander, in fic at all, who made me sit up and take notice. Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: Duncan/Methos Length: around 8,000 words Author on LJ: katallisonAuthor Website: Kat Allison's FictionWhy this must be read:
This is a beautiful Highlander story, with the best of the best I love about the source and the writing it inspired. You could do worse than start here, if you don't know Highlander, or if you do, and you're revisiting old friends. Methos walks through Paris to Duncan's barge, out of a warm September night--any night, outside of any calendar of canon. He finds Duncan sitting on deck, repairing an old phonograph. He sits, he drinks, they talk, as Duncan works. They talk about time, life, and the end of the world; they're talking about humanity; they're talking about attachment and hope and fear and certainty in the face of the unknown. They're talking about themselves, what you want them to talk about, in their ideal conversation. It's a fine blend of melancholy, hope, and affection. In the autumn, as the year turns down. Fandom: Fairy Tales: Hansel and Gretel Character: The Witch Length: 1020 words Author Website: at AO3Why this must be read: With the advent of "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters", it seemed only fair that we hear from another POV, for balance, don't ya know. She still may not win our sympathy, but she gets her say. Enjoy. It's All About the House If you like this, take a moment to tell the author. You will absolutely make her day!

Fandom: PUSHING DAISIES Pairing: Olive/Ned (unrequited), Ned/Chuck Length: 4853 Author on LJ: emilystarr1Author Website: AO3Why this must be read: Olive, let's face it, should've found out about Ned. And if she was going to, it should've gone like this. This story captures her perfectly, in all her tenacity, chronic nosiness, and desire not to be left out in the cold. It draws a subtle but important connection between her neglectful childhood and her issues with Ned, presents a plausible explanation for Ned's absolute refusal to tell her (apart from his vaguely pathological paranoia, anyway), and gives several nice insights into her relationship with the gang, all under a healthy layer of canon-style wackiness. Fandom: ONE DIRECTION Pairing: Harry/Louis Length: ~17,500 Author on LJ: blackwayfarersAuthor on AO3: blackwayfarersWhy this must be read:Between The X-Factor and the release of their first album, Harry and Louis attended Leeds Festival together. They spent three days tromping through mud, sharing clothes and a tent, and enjoying relative anonymity for one of the last times in their lives. When it was over, Harry wore his Leeds Fest entry bracelet for months afterwards, until it was falling apart. take me to the riot is a lovely, atmospheric story which imagines how this weekend might have gone: a celebration of family, music, lost weekends, and young love. Louis can feel the morning stiffness fade away as the excitement in his gut starts to get him wild and rowdy, this short trip up to Leeds Fest reminding him that it can't possibly get better than this: a bottle of vodka in his bag, a boy by his side, a tent over his shoulders, and the promise of a truly glorious disaster he has been craving for months.
