This is this author's first work of MFU fanfiction and it's a rousing adventure tale. It starts out simply enough: Illya has survived a typical encounter with a Thrush baddie during which he was slashed. But it takes him 3 days to wake up from what is not a life-threatening injury. Why?

The circumstances of how he was found are odd to say the least. And why are several members of the ancient Drakoci family (yes, THAT Drakoci family) so willing to help U.N.C.L.E. in solving (or rather resolving) this mystery?

You may have encountered similar elements in stories before, but not put together quite like this. The tale is definitely an intriguing read that balances action and real espionage work with a touch of the supernatural.

It's a short piece so I don't want to say much that might give away the story. The author warns that it's dark but, I didn't find it terribly dark. A bit of a surprise ending.

Why this must be read:
In honor of the upcoming Olympics, this seems an appropriate story to launch us into the festivities of that grand event.  In this UNCLE version of things, five teams of agents (one from each regions), are sent out to complete a series of assignments, all of which lead Solo and Kuryakin across several continents and various daunting situations.  Needless to say, the competition is grueling and the story just what we need in order to prepare for the competition ahead.

It was the visitor's turn to pause.  Solo and Kuryakin looked at them expectantly.
"The UNCLE Olympics.  Didn't you hear about it?"
Illya rolled his eyes, issued a snort of disgust and continued to eat.
"Apparently not,'
Solo responded as he picked up his coffee mug.
"What is it, exactly?"
O'Brien answered.
"Since that Harry Beldon fiasco in Berlin it seems that the head UNCLE honchos feel we need a little team building exercise.  A team representing each of the five main headquarters will run a course, sort of a cross between a treasure hunt and an obstacle course.  What ever team gets to the last point first, wins."
"Wins what?"

This is a terrific adventure for the two UNCLE agents, and the action keeps pace with the interesting turns in the story. Here is a classic mission centered story with drama, innocents, attraction and danger.  Agent Mustang gives us everything we need in an MFU story that is true to the characterizations in the original series.  

“My name is Napoleon Solo,” the senior agent worked at keeping her attention, giving his friend time to outflank her and get that damn gun out of her hands before it went off. Judging by the size, it would knock her flat if she pulled the trigger, and Solo didn’t want that any more than he wanted to be hit with whatever she loaded it with. “I’m with an organization called…”

I hope you'll give this story some time and attention.

Why this must be read:

Periwinkle passed away this week, the result of a head on collision, and the news of this sad event has just reached us here on LJ.  Susan will be missed, but her wit and stories will remain.  This one is a very short little bit that speaks volumes, I think, about how she viewed the fandom and its main duo.  It's brief and snarky, and somehow seemed just right for logging a memory of someone who brought so much to the MFU family and fandom.  The title is also wildly ironic, and reminds me all the more of her propensity for humor and love of Weird Al Yankovic.
We bid her adieu as she embarks on the next part of her journey.

This is one of the most interesting and innovative stories I've ever read.  The author weaves a tale around the observations of a crow on the hunt for food.  What he sees, and subsequently follows, is a wounded UNCLE agent as he tries to escape his THRUSH tormentors.  The dialogue between man and bird never lags, never disappoints, and the crow proves almost the mercenary equal to the other bird of prey we know.
Read this one, and then go in search of all of this writer's stories.  You won't be disappointed.

I found this while out cruising down AO3 Boulevard, and it's wild and sort of wonderful.  I am not at all familiar with the other character, which made it all the more interesting because it's an unknown for me, and possibly you as well.  The scenario is wonderfully moody, and Illya is somber and delightfully Russian in his observations and slight melancholy.  It's just weird enough to be engaging, well written and emotionally insightful.  Illya as a romantic is hard to resist, and this story will have you in a tangle of sighs and wishes.

This is a pre-series tale that begins when Illya has graduated from Cambridge.  There are KGB and lost loves, intrigue and new beginnings.  The story is tightly written in the elegant style to which we are accustomed when reading Avery's work.  

A Taste:


He paused on the landing as the memory of Lisbeth Cabot swept over him. Their parting four months earlier had been a bitter one, a confusing landscape of shifting truths and unanswered questions. It was a mistake, Illya knew, to revisit events he could not change -- an addiction of sorts, like picking at the scab on a wound until it bled -- and yet he couldn't seem to stop himself...

This is a delirious piece of writing, and Napoleon is the one having all the fun.  Is he in this satrapy on assignment, or as a test subject or merely through some serendipitous event that coincides with losing his partner?
You must read it to find out.  Kleenexwoman has a style that is uniquely her own, slightly irreverent and always a little mind bending.

Why This Must Be Read:
Because it's just about the best thing ever written.  Well, that may be an exaggeration, but not by much.  This story has so much to offer, so many delicious scenes and just the right amount of male machismo in delightful MFU packages, that you finish up wishing it were only the beginning of a very long book.  Sadly, it is not, although the preview states it was intended to be part of a novella.
This hasn't been rec'd since 2006, so i feel safe in doing it again here in a bonus Saturday round of Crack Van generosity.

A little dollop of what you have to look forward to:
"Rusito!" Reaching Illya, Vara caught his shoulders in both hands and drew him into an enthusiastic embrace, the stiff, male-bonding abrazo with which Spanish males everywhere greeted each other. Illya responded with more reserve, but he was clearly pleased to see what was, apparently, an old friend. Watching them, Napoleon Solo was struck once again, as he so often was, by how little he knew of where Illya went, and what he did, when he wasn't working.

I have no doubt that you will enjoy reading this excellent story.

When Illya refused, Napoleon retreated into himself, furious. But now it is 1975 and Waverly is trying to bring Illya back to U.N.C.L.E.. Napoleon has been given a second chance, but how will Illya react?

This story, written in 2000, takes place in present time and the two U.N.C.L.E. agents are semi-retired. Their little job turns out to be much more complicated than anticipated and they end up involved in a messy case. To solve it they have to keep Jim and Blair in sight. They do this by donning disguises that let them be close to the men. Napoleon is in his washed-up actor Vince Deal persona, and Illya is a professor.

The banter between the two men is still strong and not at all diminished by so many years of togetherness. The story is humorous and clever and I think you'll enjoy it.

Illya tells Napoleon not to make a pass at him and Napoleon respects the request, even though it is extremely difficult for him. Unfortunately, Illya realizes belatedly that he wants Napoleon and he doesn't know how to manage it. He doesn't want to go back on his word and he doesn't know what to say to make things happen.

TheRimmerConnection does a wonderful job of letting us see the agents' emotions and thoughts. You will really empathize with them.

Wow, Cousins, I barely made it to the elevator before that guard got all way too happy with his gun, man, what kinda wackjobs are they hiring in the garage now, I ask you? Why this must be read: These short little scenes can be read alone as their own stories or together as one and either way I think they are delightful. There is a sweetness to Sandy pining after what she thinks she cannot have and her coworker's fierce protectiveness is funny in the end. Our boys are dashing and bantering as they always are and I find this little trio fun. I hope you will as well. Many apologies, Cousins, there was a communications blackout this week as I was running from a whole boatload of flocking THRUSH. I've shaken the tail and have reached the safety of the UNCLE garage with only a small squealing of tires. At least I hope this is the UNCLE secure garage. My apologies in advance, Cousins. I am working from my laptop which is sadly lacking the favourites listings that I have on my descktop computer and I can't seem to find the All MFU Crack_Van Delicious page to check and see if this is a rerun, so if it is, I am heartily sorry. On the other hand it is a damn fine story and deserves a second go, I think, in case it is a rerun. Hawt slash is always in style, I say.

Why this must be read: Ok, the author note says that it is an updated timeline but other than Illya being only Russian and not actually a Soviet and a few mentions of flashdrives, this is so close to being just like correct!timeline!MFU that you won't notice it isn't. And yes, the beginning of the story is 'we had to do it for the mission' but the actual twisty turning plot will distract you from that right away. What I love about this story is that Waverly has a completely modern outlook on nondiscrimination policies and doesn't care who his agents sleep with as long as they do their jobs. That's a world I would like to live in. I also love the convoluted plot in the second half and how Illya outsmarts more than one bad guy. I love that the author never strays into 'Illya is weaker' territory and lets the characterization of our boys shine true. The hawt parts are hawt, I don't hate that either! This is a juicy (in SO many ways) piece with a great story to tell. Give it a try, I think you will enjoy the ride.
