Why this must be read:

I never really got the Omegaverse. Impossible biology, gender issues, consent issues, massive porn, OMG! But Fresne tells an involving tale built on a carefully thought out, detailed framework (like vampire stories details of the Omegaverse vary from author to author). Written in an idiosyncratic staccato style that drives the story along like the rapid fire workings of Sherlock's brain "Gordian" grabs you by the heart and gonads.

"Stars in a Phyrgian Sky" is written in the same universe but a different time-line. It isn't a sequel, but it is equally fine and the last chapter contains interesting detailed notes on the world-building involved (I advise reading it after reading the story).

There is a podfic of "Gordian" too. I love podfics :-)

Why this must be read

The top five choices to be the last rec are all read by Anatsuno, which gives you an idea of how good she is.  I have such an aural crush on her (in a very respectful, noncreepy way).  I went with the one that might not be as well known as others she has recorded but is brilliantly written by ethrosdemon.  Edith is Arthur's pet pig and that surreal idea spins out into a gorgeous post-inception life as Arthur stops being the Point Man.  One of the very best parts of this is the way the writer captures that almost indefinable atmosphere that happens when you are about to do something that is obviously foolish and you want to do it anyway.  In this story it involves a pet pig, schnapps and Brighton Beach but I am enough of a romantic to believe each of us all had wild nights that have transformed us.  That the writer delivers that feeling of peculiar joy and anticipation is tremendous.  I fear my blitherings are turning you off, not on, so the bottom line is you should go read and/or listen to Edith and you will be amazed.

Why this must be read:

University AU is just what it says on the tin, an AU with Arthur and Eames at university.  Arthur's crush on his roommate leads to a misunderstanding that leads into some outstanding porn.  And there is lots of plot and a very funny Eames background story as a privileged lord of the manor, etc., but really this is some seriously good (not campy or physically improbable) smut.  Which also explains why the podfic is so phenomenal to listen to.  It is all because it is read by Dodificus, who manages both plot and porn perfectly.  She is a podficcer of the first water and I say without hesitation that everything she records is excellent.

Another AU, this time with not one but two podfics!  Eames is "Mr. Super Genius Novelist" and Arthur his faithful editor.  I find a good pining story nearly irresistible.  Both Anatsuno and Twilight recorded podfic versions of this.  I recommend both, in part because the combination gives you a small glimpse into the other side of the microphone and all the skill that goes into making a podfic by two very talented creators.

Why this must be read:

The long-established relationship fic can be difficult to pull off convincingly, but Rageprufrock manages it with her usual deft hand.  Eames wants to role-play as an anniversary present for Arthur, who isn't very good at it.  Eames as 'Bob' (a tie-in to Handsome Bob from RocknRolla) finally convinces Arthur, who ends up being very, very good at it.  By pretending to be someone else, Eames highlights all the ways he knows Arthur best and adds a real romance to what could otherwise be PWPish.  
There is a podfic by Dodificus and she deserves scores of compliments because she is able to convey the characters as simultaneously full of affection and horny. Sex is where a lot of podifccers stumble because when it is bad it is so very, very bad. At its worst it can be like a disembodied voice doing terrible porn dialogue and is the most common reason I hit the delete button. Dodificus has always risen to the occasion, so to speak, and I will happily listen to anything she creates.

It seems obvious and logical that dream technology is alien in origin.  And of course Arthur (formerly Tommy) Solomon has been given the mission to get it back from the primitive Earthlings by the Big Giant Head.  What is actually surprising is that Arthur finds himself impressed by the human known as Eames and unexpected emotions get involved.  Only toomuchplor could make this crossover work so plausibly.  Cath brings a dry, dead-pan humor to the podfic that matches the crackiness of the story perfectly.

A common theme in the Inception fandom is that of Arthur being the exacting professional while Eames is a bit of ne'er do well.  This fic turns that around with Eames being a brilliant strategist (while hiding behind the mask of a ne'er do well) and Arthur the one being seduced by competency.  There is a podfic by the wonderful Pennyplainknits, and really, her name should be all the reason you need to give it a listen.

Why this must be read:
Viewed objectively a fic about Eames remodeling a decrepit Parisian apartment should not be that interesting.  As written by Joosetta it is lovely.  Eames builds the kind of dream apartment we all want to live in and seduces a reluctant Arthur (one of my favorite kinds of Arthur) along the way.  Who knew antique parquet tiles are the way to a man's heart.  And than there is the podfic by Anatsuno.  I do not have words for how much I love and admire Anatsuno's podfics.  That woman could read the phone book and I would listen to every single syllable.  She is like the Morgan Freeman of the podfic world with her beautiful, warm, rich voice.  Do not miss out on hearing this.

Why this must be read:

A Hollywood AU by the inimitable Gyzym.  The portrayal of Arthur as clever movie producer and Eames as the extremely talented actor plays true with the original characters.  As does their inability to talk or share their feelings as they warily circle each other in their strange version of flirtation.  It is telling that some of the most important revelations happen through text messages.  The podfic by Aphelant is a great and she adds a level of realism that helps make this AU more believable.  A fun read and a fun listen.

Why this must be read
While the rec is for the first story, all the stories in the chav!verse by delires are absolutely worth reading.  The premise seems simple enough; businessman Arthur in London has a random hook up with the unsavory Eames, a street thug of the lowest social order known unaffectionately as a chav (definition here).  Playing stereotype against stereotype is part of what makes this great fun and the sizzling sexual tension is amazing.  But what really stands out is the complexity of the characters.  The rough exterior of Eames hides a gentle man and beneath the scowls and sarcasm Arthur is a romantic.  And so a love story is built.  Plus, the idea of Arthur being at heart a little raver pleases me.

And this has podfic!  I must admit I really hesitated before giving this a try as I was afraid of an American doing some kind of terrible, mangled Cockney accent.  Like Dick Van Dyke's horrifying Cockney in Mary Poppin's level of bad.  And since the whole set-up depends on getting Eames as a chav right, it seemed too much to hope for.  I was totally and completely wrong.  Seussian pulls it off brilliantly.  In fact, she somehow makes his slang part of what is intrinsically hot about Eames and one of the reasons why Arthur can't stay away.  If you go for the podfic, please take my advice and make sure you get the sequel, When Life Sucks, Put On Some Glitter.

Why this must be read

I believe it is a truth universally acknowledged that if you see Rageprufrock in the byline, you must read the story.  Early Returns is a newspaper AU with Eames as an investigative journalist and Arthur his editor.  Think Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday levels of banter and attraction.  Dom, Mal, Yusuf and Ariadne all play convincing secondary roles as do several original characters and you get a fascinating look into the workings of a newspaper.  And to make it even better, there is a wonderful podfic by tinypinkmouse.  This one is on heavy rotation for me, I never get tired of listening to her.

As a longtime lurker, this is my first time driving the van.  It was part of my New Year’s resolution to let the authors and podficcers who create so many wonderful stories know that they are appreciated and admired.  And I think this month will be a grand opportunity to do just that for the many, many, many talented writers in the Inception fandom.

This last weekend was happily spent re-reading old favorites and finding new gems to share in the Inception fandom.  I should note that I ship almost exclusively Arthur/Eames and fall heavily onto the Team Romance side of the fence.  And looking over my lists, you will probably be seeing a lot of AUs.  I am also a podfic addict and proud of it.  In many cases I heard the story before reading it myself and the readers have colored my love of many stories.  Inception fandom is blessed with some prodigiously talented podficcers that I plan to rec as well.  Now on to the reccing!

And to start the month of with a bang is Toomuchplor’s first story of her Steinway!verse.  Since it is by Toomuchplor it is a given that it is beautifully written with the characters of Arthur and Eames fully realized.  What makes this even better is that it is an AU set in a conservatory with Arthur being a talented young pianist and Eames the star baritone of the school.  A major joy in the series is that the power and beauty of music is as big a character as the boys are, and we get to see their talent and passion for their art.  And then add in some smoking hot sexy times as whip cream on top.  I am linking to the series page in AO3 because I cannot imagine anyone who reads the first story won’t go immediately on to devour the next 20 stories like I did.

The first story, Ach, das Knaben Augen is podficced, as is Je te veux.  Both by the beautifully voiced Pennyplainknits and Xenakis.  I do truly encourage you to listen with the music as it adds so much context for the stories.

Why this must be read/listened to:
I discovered this steaming hot, though romantic and completely in character phone sex fic via [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl's own podfic of it, which she recorded for the recent round of dS/C6D Tag.

Therefore I got my voice kink button pushed twice over, while listening with Ray to a snarky, sneaky Fraser telling a shaggy-dog (or should we say wolf) story.

Why this must be read: It starts with a shoot-out in a diner, it has fabulous team dynamics, and Steve is forced to wait out his medical leave by looking after Grace for Danny while Rachel's away and Danny's at work. Naturally, you want a babysitter who knows several ways to disarm an attacker; unfortunately, Steve would've done better if he'd known about things like naps and avoiding sugar. Still, the story rolls on with Steve learning how to trust Danny to do the job without him for a little while, and also learning what it means to care for the most important thing in someone else's life. That level of trust isn't given to just anyone ... and it helps both Danny and Steve realize what they are to one another, and what they could be.

( 'This is what happens when I let you take me out to lunch!' Danny yelled at Steve, because he needed to yell at someone right now, his heart was thudding in his chest, and he had a feeling the shooters wouldn't be so receptive. )

Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] knowmydark tends to be known for her angst fics, but she's also written some lovely romantic (and comedic) pieces. In this one, set pre-dreamshare, Arthur and Eames are friends (and criminals) who take turns watching one another's backs. Essentially, whenever a contract is put out on one, the other picks it up, and then proceeds not to kill him. There are flaws in the arrangement, however--there are only so many times you can not kill someone--and sometimes another hitman gets a little too close for comfort.

What this story gives us is a look at Arthur and Eames' unique relationship before they got into dream-sharing. I like stories that give us a glimpse of who they were before Cobb, Mal and all the rest, and this fic has great banter, genuine friendship, and the very start of their dream-share experiences. It's amusing, but there's also an undeniable charm to the story in how well the two characters know and trust one another, and appreciate each other's quirks.

We've gone through a good selection of introductory stories, some of the must-read stories, alternate universes, crossovers, and now for something completely different: crack (or at least stories that have a bit of a crazy premise, work fantastically, and will make you laugh!)

Why this must be read: We know Eames as the forger who can forge anyone. But when Arthur and Cobb ask if he's ever forged an animal before, Eames lies and says "yes," figuring "how hard can it be?" Of course, he pulls it off magnificently, but there are unforeseen complications. Naturally.

What this gives you is an absolutely hilarious fic from Eames' point of view where he's taking on attributes of a dog subconsciously. His inner monologue is brilliant, and the author really captures that dog-persona of wanting to please the master (particularly Arthur). Of course, the team can't help but exploit the situation to Eames' dismay and everyone else's amusement, and the long-suffering Arthur turns out to be far more sympathetic than Eames could have dreamed. Eventually.

This is one of those stories that I read if I need a quick pick-me-up, a laugh, a smile in the middle of a tough day. It's delightful.

Why this must be read/listened to:Since I'm a huge podfic fan and this week is Pod-aware week, I'm putting in a couple of podfic recs. First is this epic, emotional, beautiful story of, as the author likes to call it "oblivious high school failboats in love". Penny does a fantastic job of bringing sunset-mogs words to life and really makes your heart ache for poor lonely Brendon. Whatever you do, don't listen in public because you're likely to develop teary eyes at many points.

Why this must be listened to: This is an absolutely flawless example of how fantastic podfic can be, with the right story and the right author. New Rule is a very atmospheric, dialogue-heavy story - taking place in a basement in the dark - so it works perfectly for the way [livejournal.com profile] shiningartifact reads: soft and familiar and just like you'd imagine, for two friends whispering back and forth in the middle of the night.

The moment that things shift from joking around to something more is done so well in the podfic - the tone of voice, the hesitation, the nervous excitement... in every way, this recording shows exactly what can be so great about podfic: it not only tells a story just how you'd imagine it, but it adds another dimension you never could have gotten from the written word, like filling a painting in with big strokes of colour. If you're not sure about whether you'll like podfic or not, [livejournal.com profile] shiningartifact is the person to try: she puts so much care and attention into her work, into making it true to the characters and the story, that it's hard not to fall in love with the way she reads.
