Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Paring: Steve/Danny Length: 39,606 Author on LJ: jaguarcaine (Joe Lawson) Author Website: Joe Lawson's fic on A03Why this must be read:
I'm not a big fan of crack fic so when I saw this one pop up today, I gave it a pass at first. I mean, Danny as a merman? Oh, please. But then I saw a couple of people whose taste in fic seems to be similar to mine reccing it so I decided to give it a try. I literally just finished reading it, left feedback for the author, and ran over here to rec it. This story follows canon from the first episode on pretty closely, but with one difference: Merfolk are commonplace and Danny is a merman. The author obviously spent a lot of time thinking about the mer universe and it's fascinating. Mer have different characteristics and looks depending on what stock they're from. For instance, Hawaiian mer evolved from dolphins and Scandinavian mer (Danny's tribe) evolved from sharks. This makes it difficult for Danny to fit in among the ali'i kai and he has a rough time adjusting to the islands where he has moved to follow his human ex-wife and their half-mer daughter. All that changes when Steve bulldozes his way into Danny's life and Danny finds himself bonding with Steve, a thought that scares him because it didn't work out well with Rachel, who was unable to handle the intensity of a mer-human relationship. This is a well-realized AU that is fascinating from start to finish. Excerpt: And just like that, they were four; the weirdest task force to ever task. A SEAL crusader, a mer detective, a half-breed rookie, and a discredited ex-cop. This was either going to go spectacularly wrong, or... Danny smirked. Nah. It was going to work, he could feel it. There was an energy about them when they were together that made him think there was little they wouldn't be able to do if they got a chance to get off the ground. He was right about that. They clicked into place so easily Danny lost himself in it, let himself engage without the usual filter, and it wasn't until they took a break to collect the things they'd need that Danny realized how much Chin had thawed out and that Kono really wasn't scared of him and, worst of all, that he'd started to touch Steve. Nothing much; small nudges to get the man's attention mostly, little pokes to underline a point, the occasional bump of knee against knee to distract Steve when Steve got too intense, but Danny knew himself and he knew the signs. He was starting to imprint on the crazy-ass SEAL, daddy issues, lack of common sense, and all. Steve was at least as much of a mess as his father's case was – a violent mess, pieces all over the place, with somebody's bloody handprints all over it – but Danny loved puzzles and wasn't scared by blood and violence, and Steve McGarrett made him feel alive in all the right ways. Danny wanted to pull down those stupid cargo pants and nuzzle between Steve's legs to learn his secrets, maybe lick him a little, see if he tasted as good as he smelled. He wanted to strip down and offer himself, feel Steve's skin against his, make Steve hold on to him and take him Below, down where the cool currents would soothe their heat and carry their mingled scents into the open ocean. Damn it. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue SeaFor a look at the amazing artwork that accompanies this story, go here.

Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Pairing: Steve/Danny Length: 78,000 Author on LJ: portraitofafool Author Website: portraitofafool's Master Fic List
Why this must be read:
I'm back from vacation with more recs! One of may favorite fanfic tropes is amnesia. I love it, and I will hunt it down in every fandom I'm in. Where the World Drops Off is probably my favorite amnesia story. Period. In any fandom. Steve lies in a coma for months following a near-fatal car accident. When he finally wakes up, he has no memory of himself or his past. He slowly puts together a new life with the help of his team - especially Danny - and a new friend, his physical therapist, Devion, who is one of the richest, most well-drawn original characters I've ever seen in a fan fic. In addition to dealing with the amnesia, this story does not gloss over the terrible physical injuries Steve receives in the accident, his recovery from them and their lingering effects.
portraitofafool is not tempted to go the easy route of producing a "miracle cure" and having everything back to the way it was by the end of the story as so many disability fics do. While there is a happy ending, nobody is the same, least of all, Steve.
This story is full of great details, such as the book club that Danny, Chin and Kono form while reading to Steve while he is in the coma and that continues throughout the story. I also love that Steve and Mary get to have the relationship they were never able to have before. It's just a wonderful story that will have you laughing and crying and wishing you'd written it.
Excerpt:
He was aware—and always was—that maybe there was more going on with his worries than just a casual fear because it /ate/ at him. He’d asked those same questions out loud a couple of times, but inside it was like a running loop of dialog in his head. It went everywhere with him, standing beside him while making a sandwich; peering over his shoulder while he was tying his shoes. It was there, soaping his wet back in the shower or looking out at him from the mirror as he brushed his teeth. That anxiety never went away, just like his fear of falling asleep. He didn’t know if he could stand that kind of grief again; mourning for something as intangible as memories was like grasping at nothing but air; insubstantial, but vital. Fear stemming from that kind of loss had the potential to be suffocating if not held at bay. That knowledge was even heavier when he had his friends—old and new—all gathered on his back lawn, grilling and talking; sharing drinks and laughs. He’d looked out at them all gathered there and sighed at the possibility that one day that, too, could be taken away from him.

Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Pairing: Steve/Danny Length: 51,276 Author on LJ: delicatale Author Website: delicatale's Fic on AO3
Why this must be read:
This AU begins in 2005 when Steve, an active Navy SEAL finds himself on leave in Newark, NJ. Wandering around the city, he finds Williams', a boxing gym owned by Danny. He and Danny grow close, but Steve has this bad habit of leaving without saying goodbye. The story follows their evolving relationship through five years as Steve spends each of his leaves in Newark. delicatale does a great job of keeping Steve and Danny in character throughout this lovely story.
Excerpt:
“So what, I’m your little bit of rough on the side?” Steve huffs out a laugh, looking down and scratching the back of his neck, feeling a little sheepish. Danny is a lot more things that Steve can’t really talk about, even here and now, especially here and now. Maybe later. He has a hard time believing Danny would be forgiving this easily. “Can say that.” It takes Danny a while to reply, but when he does, he looks serious again. “I’m glad you think I’m worth spending time in New Jersey for when you’ve got leave, Steve, really, I’m flattered. But you know what? I’m not going through this again. So go ahead and go find someone else to fuck and leave.” “Danny, please.”

Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Pairing: Steve/Danny Length: 12,789 Author on LJ: Mirabella is not on LJ, but she is on DW as mirabella. Author Website: Mirabellafic at DWWhy this must be read: This story is known around H50 fandom as the veela story, most probably because, in the story, Danny is a veela. And it's time to mate. It's your classic fuck-or-die situation, H50 style. That means a hilariously cranky Danny, Steve being more psycho than usual and Kono as the cockblocker from hell. Chin is long suffering, as always. And guess who Danny needs to mate for life with? Go on, guess! Excerpt: It's not until he's in the middle of the whole thing and looks back that Danny realizes something: when he heard the voice in Jack McGarrett's house where voices should not be because it was an active crime scene, he was already on his way to the garage. He tries to convince himself that it was just coincidence, and he really wasn't making straight for the garage in his attempt to figure out what smelled so fucking amazing in that house.
Danny's not actually very good at lying to himself. It's a problem.
His first clue that he's got trouble is when the gun-runner doesn't shoot him.
Or no, maybe it starts before that, when he wakes up that morning with that itch under his skin that feels like his temperature's up, in such a foul mood that even his Gracie better not set a foot out of line. Fortunately she's an angel, so by the time Danny drops her off at school he's in a little better a mood; but three hours later, when he's staring down the barrel of his own gun into the barrel of a gangster's, because that is how his life goes, he's wondering if it would really be so bad to pull a page out of Steve's book and throw the guy off a roof.

Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Pairing: Steve/Danny Length: 6541 Author on LJ: thehoyden Author Website: thehoyden's fic on AO3
Why this must be read:
Second only to undercover in a gay bar, fandom's favorite cop show trope is undercover as a gay couple. thehoyden does a great job with a well-worn trope. A serial killer is targeting gay men with their SO's name tattooed on their person. Danny is the bait and he has Steve's name (temporarily) tattooed on his ass. They go undercover at a gay resort where they catch the killer and discover their love for each other. This story is sweet, sexy, and funny.
Excerpt:"This guy must be the most ridiculous serial killer ever," Danny says grumpily, accepting the cup of coffee Steve hands him as his due. "Seriously, this is his criteria? Go after yahoos who are dumb enough to get someone's name tattooed on them?"
"It says something pretty powerful about the connection between two people," Chin says mildly, but Danny refuses to be duped. Chin can make really insane things sound totally reasonable, which is basically how he got into this mess in the first place.
"Yes, it says they're all idiots," Danny mutters, and he absolutely counts himself among that number, now.

Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Pairing: Steve/Danny Length: 1276 Author on LJ: wickedtruth Author Website: Wickedtruth's Fic on AO3
Why this must be read: Bringing you a little change of pace with a bit of pure porn. Salvation Under My Breath takes place in Steve's garage, in the backseat of the Marquis, to be exact, and it is hot like fire. It's a hot day and Steve and Danny make it even hotter. You might need a cigarette after reading this, even if you don't smoke.
Excerpt: Every time they move, the leather creaks and sticks to him and Danny's sure he's going to lose a layer of skin from his back by the time they're done, but it's still too good to stop. It's slow and lazy Sunday afternoon rutting that started with an argument over the car and Danny's unwillingness to risk another drive, and ended with him pressing Steve against the side of the car and kissing him until he stopped trying to talk. They'd stripped each other, a piece at a time, trading kisses and touches and enjoying the slow burn of arousal that sparked between them until it felt like every breath was heat soaked and full of longing.

Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Pairing: Steve/Danny Length: 74,556 words Author on LJ: zarah5 Author Website: Zarah5's fic on AO3Why this must be read:I love a good AU and this is a great, long, AU. Steve is a spy "who does things differently" and Danny is his handler. Chin is their boss and Kono is the receptionist who is more than meets the eye. The story follows Steve and Danny as they travel the world on missions, stay in hotels, break rules and fall in love. Keeping characters in character is often tricky in an AU, but Zarah does it right. Danny still rants and Steve is still crazy and together they still have an intense chemistry. The author warns for graphic depictions of violence, but I don't think it's anything you wouldn't see on the show. Settle in with a nice cup of tea for this novella. It's one hell of a great read. Excerpt:
Steve. Alright. Chances are that's the only part of his name that's genuine; agents who are sent out to do field work don't risk revealing themselves, and while Steve might be used to doing things differently, that's one rule that applies nearly unilaterally. Sometimes, it leads to the meeting of two fake last names that are both connected to a color – brown and red? Awesome. This partnership is clearly destined to be.What a shame that star-crossed relationships tend to end in mutual death. Like Romeo and Juliet, who killed themselves. Like Bonnie and Clyde, who died in a rain of bullets. Set Fire to This Card HouseETA the excerpt and a few more details. I was exhausted last night and did not do this story justice.

Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Pairing: Steve/Danny Length: 15,492 words Author on LJ: leupagus and sutlersAuthor Website: Leupagus' fic on AO3 and Sutlers' fic on AO3Why this must be read:
This is without a doubt my favorite story in this fandom. I can't tell you how many times I've read it and each time it grabs me and won't let go. It also answers a question I've had since the Pilot aired: What happens if Steve, who has transferred from the Navy to the Reserves in order to head the Governor's task force, gets reactivated? Well, he leaves Danny something to remember him by and disappears for a year and a half, returning briefly now and again to unwind or hide and have sex with Danny. Danny, in the meantime, gets promoted to Captain, moves into Steve's house, makes the new teammate cry and wonders why everyone assumes that he and Steve are married. This story is funny, has great characterization and a terrific portrayal of Rachel. Excerpt: Despite the solid lead, Victor Hesse's trail goes cold, and Danny goes through April and May in what Chin calls "a funk" and Kono calls "menopause." He yells a lot more than he usually does and Ben actually, physically cries twice. Danny feels bad about not feeling bad about it.
He sleeps in the master bedroom, the one Steve slept in, the one that used to be Jack’s, and finds a framed polaroid of a woman he assumes is Steve’s mother hidden away in the back of the bottom bedside drawer. She’s crashed out on a hideous paisley couch with a baby -- Mary -- in one arm and a miniature Steve leaning solemnly over her sleeping face and attempting to insert his forefinger in her right nostril. "You little shit," Danny mutters, and puts it back where it came from, under a pile of miscellaneous junk -- screws, ribbons, colored glass worn smooth by the rhythm of the waves.
On a Wednesday night in June, Danny falls asleep over the paperwork he’s brought home and wakes up at three in the morning, heart pounding, because there is someone else in the room. Steve coughs, illuminated dimly by the bedside lamp.
"Jesus Christ," Danny says. "Hello, this is the most terrifying thing that’s happened to me in the past four months."
"I didn’t think there would be anyone here," Steve says. "You moved in?"

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC / Hawaii Five-O Pairing: John, Sherlock Length: ~7,000 Author on LJ: ariadnes_stringAuthor Website: Master List on LJWhy this must be read:In this two-piece story, John first meets Steve McGarrett in Afghanistan and Steve notes that Dr. Watson is "calm as fuck." He also notes his "sharpshooter's eye and his beautiful smile." Steve drinks Dr. Watson's tea and enjoys being taken care of by the strong, steady man we have all come to know and love. (Who wouldn't?) Then John visits Hawaii for a vacation and Danny senses something is wrong. And he knows about British people, 'cause he was married to one for six years! And then Danny finally meets the reason for John's vacation. As for Sherlock, well, Getting Sherlock Holmes drunk on umbrella drinks was the most fun Danny had had for a long time. Bravo, Danny! What keeps this crossover strong is how naturally everything flows together. It makes perfect sense, no backflips were necessary to get the characters to interact. And ariadnes_string's strong suit is spot-on descriptions, crisp story-telling, and excellent character voices. Aloha, Dr. Watson and the sequel, Pelekane, or, the English Visitor.

Yes, H5O has them! And like everything in this fandom, they're awesome! This one's taking Danny's New Jersey roots and giving them the best kind of twist. Danny the Mafia Don flirting and fighting with Steve "The Law" McGarrett is one long blissful read sure to remind you why you loved the show in the first place despite messing with the fundamental premise. The fic is that awesome. Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, I give you "undercover-in-a-gay-bar". Not only did lamardeuse write it, but she wrote it well. The fic is amusing, the banter just works, and the expected atmosphere of "we're already awkward about how hot we are for each other and the setting really isn't helping" is dead on. I was so busy trying to decide which fics would be worthy of one of my slots that I let the posting slide. I'm all set now. And now without further ado ... This story stands out for me because we get a sense of the characters through the eyes of someone who's on the outside, but close enough to notice plenty. It also brings up the difficulty of being a police wife, and how it demands a kind of fortitude that even for Steve is hard to come by (and I love Danny but I'm not sure I'd want to be married to him). Finally it fills in the blanks and shows how a couple as different as Danny and Rachel could have happened and worked and fallen apart. It's a great character portrait of Rachel, and while it got jossed last episode, it's well-written and worth reading all the same for the way it highlights the characters in it in interesting ways. In fact, it may well be my favorite. It's rare in fanfic that you read a truly good male inner voice for a guy, but this Danny is perfect. So it'd be worth reading for that alone. And then there's the plot, and what a plot it is! This story addresses an issue that pops up frequently enough, namely that the military or law enforcement aren't exactly the gay-friendliest environments, so coming out there is not easy. But, boy, does this fic take it to a whole new level. Anyone who's ever had a one-night-stand knows that running into someone you had sex with and hoped you'd never see again is awkward, but now picture a cop running into someone he banged in the backroom of a cruising bar. While working. Awkwardest arrest ever. The fic is in turns mortifying, heart-warming, hilarious, scorchingly hot, and its own guy way, adorably sweet. Run to read it.
