Why this story must be read

Vital, visceral, revelling in power and pain - the incomparable, awful, amazing, utterly singular Simon Adebisi is marvellously evoked here in this brief character sketch by Te. Adebisi was completely reprehensible but, man, he was alive! Em City sure was quieter without him.

12:32 pm "Spring Break, Sidekick Style" by Perri Smith (PG)
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: a little Buffy/Angel, but this is primarily a buddy-fic
Author's website: Seanachais
author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] neonhummingbird

Why this must be read:
This is a fun, classic, old-school Buffy fic. When Giles goes chasing after Buffy and Willow - who have managed to get into trouble on their Spring Break vacation - Xander is the only Scooby left to keep an eye on the Hellmouth. There's more trouble than he'd hoped, and he's forced to turn to the only other person in Sunnydale who can help him: Angel.

There's lot of fun, snarky banter, a little bonding - forced though it may be - and a little perspective-sharing. Best of all, it really captures S1 Xander and Angel - the slightly-hyper wise-guy, the cryptic-guy hesitancy. A lovely bit of nostalgic fun.

Spring Break, Sidekick Style

P.S. - if you're interested in Buffy and Willow's side of the adventure, the companion piece to this is Spring Break, Slayer Style, a Forever Knight crossover.

02:21 pm Gift-Wrapped by O Yardley
Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Author on LJ: no
Author Website: no

Why this must be read:

O Yardley was one of the founders of Pros slash. She wrote the first, or one of the first, stories back around 1978 while the show was still airing. In an example of amazing fannish longevity, she's still writing Pros stories more than a quarter of a century later. Anyone interested in this fandom must sample O Yardley's work--and since she's created a large backlist, there's much to delve into for those who discover they enjoy her style. Her circuit stories aren't all online yet, but they're coming.

O Yardley is the only author I've recced whose work doesn't appeal much to me personally. I still think she's a must-read, especially as many fans love her stories. And--usefully!--the stories of hers I do actually rather enjoy are some of the Christmas ones, of which there are many. So, as we've now reached Christmas in the holiday calendar I've been reccing my way through, this is a good point to introduce readers to her work.

This particular story from 1992 is a typically light-hearted look at how misapprehension can turn out to be a positive force.

03:16 pm Travel Light by Kerlin (PG-13)
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Grissom/Sara
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kerlin
Author Website: Dare to be Naive
Why this must be read:

This is a must-read for all angst/dark!fic fans, and not only because GSR darkfic is rare in this fandom, but because Kerlin weaves the story of Grissom and Sara's relationship in a unique way - from the end to the beginning. And I think it works really well with the overall sombre tone of the fic.

04:07 pm Do As You Like by Merri-Todd Webster (NC-17)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Severus Snape/Harry Potter
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mommybird
Author Website: The Viriditas Experimental Project
Why this must be read:

I admit that I have a soft spot for post-war stories and Do As You Like is a prime example why. In the story, the war has been won and both Snape and Harry discover that they can, well, do as they like. The story is charming and filled with understated romance, while managing to capture some lovely humourous moments as well as some scorchingly hot scenes. It's definitely engaging and, in combination with the fact that it's a good length, it will keep you entertained through a boring afternoon or a sleepless night.

Fandom: THE O.C.
Pairing: Ryan/Donnie, mention of Ryan/Seth
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] alannaofdooom
Author Website: none
Why this must be read: "The Last Time" is a glimpse into where Ryan's life could be five years from now. Unfortunately, in keeping with this week's dark theme, it's not the happiest of fics but it's realistic.

Ryan hasn't talked to or seen the Cohens in three years because he believes that people won't get hurt when he's not around. While visiting Trey in jail, he runs into Donnie, of Crabshack and shooting Luke fame, who's just been released from jail. Ryan offers Donnie a ride home and thinks about his life, how he's gotten to this point. Some things happen between Ryan and Donnie at Donnie's welcome home party and Ryan stuggles to come to grips with it. He also tries to figure out whether or not he deserves to be happy. An excerpt:

And all that time, Donnie had been in the back of his mind, a reminder of who he really was – a scared, fucked up kid from Chino. Not good enough. Not ever. Just hoping maybe if he made everyone happy enough, kept them distracted, they wouldn't bother to really look at him, really see him.

Go, read and enjoy.

06:17 pm "I Have A Bad Feeling About This" by Ruth Gifford and atara (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE

Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] telesilla

Author Website: ???

Why this must be read: This is one of the very first stories I ever read in TPM fandom, and has remained one of my favorites through all these years. It's an incredibly hot depiction of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in a BDSM relationship. But beyond the obvious kink and smut (which it has in abundance, described in loving detail), this story has a running theme of devotion and love and trust that takes my breath away every time I read it.

An excerpt )

Simply beautiful. Obi-Wan's submission is written as the most tender of gifts, and the possessiveness and love Qui-Gon feels for him is palpable. This is one I've gone back to reread again and again and again.

09:25 pm VC-25A by Punk and Sabine
Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: according to the story notes, "It's like a Magic Eight Ball of ambiguity and innuendo!"
Authors on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] runpunkrun and [livejournal.com profile] sabine101
Author Websites: Punk hangs out in The Underground while Sab claims you guys are just fucked
Why this must be read:

The summary reads, "CJ, Sam, Ainsley, filet of sole, Toby, a raft, some other people, and a room with a glass door, in the great tradition of experimental dinner theater."

Imagine, if you will, that President Bartlet has offended the green bean farmers of the world, or at least of the US. Or, more specifically, of Corvallis, Oregon. Imagine someone gave Lionel Tribbey an inflatable raft. Imagine Toby with food poisoning. Imagine, if you can, that while all of this was taking place on Air Force One, Sam threw a hissy fit and locked himself in the bathroom.

The door swung open and Ainsley breezed in. )

Even while spoon-feeding us gut-bustingly funny experimental dinner theater, Punk and Sab absolutely nail the indiosyncratic dialogue and manic rhythm of Sorkin at his finest.

This story comes with a beverage warning. Unless you like the feeling of liquid being forced through your nostrils at some astronomical speed - which I couldn't tell you, but Sam Seaborn would most likely know - don't read while drinking.

10:44 pm All new!! Friday Night Drive-In!
Sorry for the short notice here, but tomorrow we’re going to trial run what I hope will be a new monthly feature – Friday Night Drive-In, a.k.a. Fan Vid Recs.

Reccers may post 1 vid rec for their fandom, formatted as follows:

Subject Line: VID REC: Fandom - Song Title

Song Title/Artist:
Pairing:
Vidder:
Vidder on LJ:
Vidder's website:
Warnings: (explicit lyrics, graphic images, etc.)
Why this vid kicks ass:

Because the vidder community has some unique ownership issues, it’s important that reccers be extra careful when making vid recs. Depending on the vidder’s preferences regarding public access to their work, please link your rec in the appropriate manner:

1. If the video is publicly accessible, direct link to the web page the vid is linked on, or if it’s the vidder’s request, to the HTML splash page of their site.

or…

2. Link to the site with instructions on acquiring the password, if the site is protected – do not reveal the password yourselves.

or…

3. Provide contact info for the vidder if their vids are only available privately (tapes, dvd-R’s, collections, etc.).

Do not:
Hotlink, i.e. link directly to the video file rather than the webpage.
Re-upload videos that a vidder has removed from the web.
Delay in removing a vid rec if requested to do so by the vidder.

Bottom line, please respect the wishes of the individual vidder regarding how their work is distributed and rec’d!
