Why this must be read:Every fandom has
some fic which is written about 'what would happen if Buffy/Angel/Blair/Frodo/Paris etc found fanfiction about themselves/started writing fanfiction'.
Not every fandom has the added bonus of the writers inserting a tv show
based on the fandom
into the fandom, however.
Um.
To simplify; the writers of SG-1 wrote an episode concerning a tv show which was based on events at Cheyenne Mountain. This tv show - with the tough ex-special forces colonel, the geeky but cute-beyond-the-telling-of-it archaeology expert, the beautiful female scientist and the enigmatic alien - was called
X-treme Wormhole. Sound familiar? Well, Sam Carter discovers (while innocently surfing the net for information on wormholes) slash fanfiction about Colonel Danning and Dr. Levant (based on Jack and Daniel respectively).
And then things really start to get fun.
This is a stroke of pure genius. From Jack's panicked response to the cheerful lampooning
of well-known fic in the fandom (Anais's
Doctor Jackson's Diary is one of those mentioned) to Teal'c superbly 'I-may-technically-be-human-but-am-so-glad-not-to-as-neurotic-as-you-lot' attitude, to the unutterably evil combination of Sam and Janet (and any fic which can concentrate on Jack and Daniel but without bashing Sam and/or Janet deserves some kind of award in my book) this will simultaneously make you giggle, eradicate a bad mood and make you wish you'd thought of writing it yourself (or, if SG-1 isn't your fandom, make you wish that
your favourite fandom had used the same idea).
I think one of my favourite things about this fic was the fact that
nothing Jack and Daniel did wasn't anything which hadn't appeared in canon but was getting a completely new interpretation by everyone around them based on the fanfiction. The thought of X-treme Wormhole fic being passed around the SGC is also a hoot.
( 'For cryin' out loud, this is SG-1 they're writing about,' Sam muttered to herself. The show may have changed the characteristics to an extent and given them different names, but she knew who they were. Everyone on base knew who they were. She decided she needed to stop thinking with the
female mentality that screamed 'one guy is hot but two guys are hotter' and decided she would seek out a nice intelligent conversation with a high I.Q. She switched the laptop off and left her office. )The links to the story are
