Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky and Hutch

Fic Link: http://www.squidge.org/~flamingo/starskyhutchslash/classic/Bond/SkyBlueBlack.htm

Why this must be read: The story was originally published in the mixed-media zine Red Hot Lovers. The boys are sent undercover at a gay bar to take down Joshua Bright. Afterword, Hutch becomes angry over why it was them that was sent in the first place.

"They used us," said Hutch finally. "They used us, who we were, how we work . . . "

"The fact that we're friends?" prompted Starsky.

"More than that." Hutch was shaking his head now, as if he'd already explained everything and Starsky was now disagreeing with him. "We have a bond, a special bond, I.A. knows it, Dobey knows it, Special Investigations knows it. A bond that looks like love."

"It is love," said Starsky, his head going down, eyes still on Hutch. "We do care for each other."

Hutch lifted his head to look him straight in the eye. "It's more than that. So much more; man, sometimes it's the only thing that keeps me sane."

It's not an easy journey to discern what that bond actually means. Getting sidelined by Bright's continued case and throwing in multitudes of emotional angst may well break the boys, but the turmoil of their minds is only part of the problem. They have to come to terms with who they are to one another.

09:53 am Cross The Border by Leah Rosenthal & Ann Wortham (PG-ish)

Why this must be read: After Gauda Prime Vila could have escaped the Federation, but first he needed to find out what had happened to the others. This is a great Vila story, in which he shows, as he does in canon that he can be brave, when he has to be. And, as others have said, being brave is much harder when you know what it's like to be scared. This story also shows up again, just what the Federation and those running it will do to people in order to achieve their ends.

09:54 am Enemy Without by TJ
Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky and Hutch

Fic Link: http://insaneasylum.slashfanfiction.com/starskyhutch/enemywithout.htm

Why this must be read: When one partner rapes the other, how can there be forgiveness? Even though it wasn't Starsky's fault, the act still happened and the pain it cause will create ripples throughout the partnership.

"Starsk... buddy..." Hutch said continuing to struggle. "You don't wanna do
this."

"Wanna bet?"

They have to find out who did this to Starsky, to them, but they've also got to rebuild the bond that was severed on a violent night when one partner took control of the other's body.

Pairing: Jack/Daniel
Rating: NC-17
Why this must be read:

Before I started doing the recs for SG-1, I had a look at what had been recced already and I was surprised that no one had recced anything by Biblio, who is one of the best writers in this particular pairing and one of my top five fanfic writers of all.

Biblio's peculiar strength is in first time fic, of which Stealing Minnesota is possibly the best. There's an astonishingly quiet quality to this story which deals with Jack and Daniel spending a week at Jack's cabin in Minnesota. Daniel is quietly and pogniantly hopelessly in love with Jack but he doesn't just hang around and pine - the characterisation is wonderfully snarky at times and the road to true love is bumpy and, um, has Jack in it.

This is a gorgeous story. The quality of the writing and the characterisation is very high and Biblio's confidence with the characters, the fandom and the emotions/relationship shows through every line. Whether SG-1 is one of your fandoms or not, I cannot recommend this highly enough. Something to read, reread and treasure.

Jack had leaped to the wrong conclusion and barrelled in as always to rescue Daniel, his closest friend and confidant. It hadn't even crossed his mind to check with Daniel if he needed rescuing. Zero to impossibly pissy and overprotective in sixty seconds. Or less. He had no objectivity at all where Daniel was concerned )

Why this must be read:

Every fandom has some fic which is written about 'what would happen if Buffy/Angel/Blair/Frodo/Paris etc found fanfiction about themselves/started writing fanfiction'. Not every fandom has the added bonus of the writers inserting a tv show based on the fandom into the fandom, however.

Um.

To simplify; the writers of SG-1 wrote an episode concerning a tv show which was based on events at Cheyenne Mountain. This tv show - with the tough ex-special forces colonel, the geeky but cute-beyond-the-telling-of-it archaeology expert, the beautiful female scientist and the enigmatic alien - was called X-treme Wormhole. Sound familiar? Well, Sam Carter discovers (while innocently surfing the net for information on wormholes) slash fanfiction about Colonel Danning and Dr. Levant (based on Jack and Daniel respectively).

And then things really start to get fun.

This is a stroke of pure genius. From Jack's panicked response to the cheerful lampooning

of well-known fic in the fandom (Anais's Doctor Jackson's Diary is one of those mentioned) to Teal'c superbly 'I-may-technically-be-human-but-am-so-glad-not-to-as-neurotic-as-you-lot' attitude, to the unutterably evil combination of Sam and Janet (and any fic which can concentrate on Jack and Daniel but without bashing Sam and/or Janet deserves some kind of award in my book) this will simultaneously make you giggle, eradicate a bad mood and make you wish you'd thought of writing it yourself (or, if SG-1 isn't your fandom, make you wish that your favourite fandom had used the same idea).

I think one of my favourite things about this fic was the fact that nothing Jack and Daniel did wasn't anything which hadn't appeared in canon but was getting a completely new interpretation by everyone around them based on the fanfiction. The thought of X-treme Wormhole fic being passed around the SGC is also a hoot.

'For cryin' out loud, this is SG-1 they're writing about,' Sam muttered to herself. The show may have changed the characteristics to an extent and given them different names, but she knew who they were. Everyone on base knew who they were. She decided she needed to stop thinking with the female mentality that screamed 'one guy is hot but two guys are hotter' and decided she would seek out a nice intelligent conversation with a high I.Q. She switched the laptop off and left her office. )
