01:10 pm Forever Friends by Peruvian Gypsy
(The recs this week have no common theme. They are from three different points of plot and show the variety of issues that can be dealt with in SH. In fact, two of them are gen;)

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky & Hutch

Why this must be read: Originally published in the zine Don't Give Up On Us #1, it's a look at Hutch's friends, one from before and one from now. Beau Cochran knew Ken Hutchinson as Ken, a young man starting college with his whole life in front of him. David Starsky knows Ken Hutchinson as simply Hutch, a strong man who has been his partner for ten years and has seen both the bad and good life brings. The two images don't seem to match and all three friends start tearing apart. Who is Ken Hutchinson and just how long is forever when it comes to friendship?

Why this must be read: My lone SH slash rec for the week. This story's theme comes from 101 Ways To End Up In A Canadian Shack. It's post-SR and Starsky's on the road to recovery. I'm not sure he thought the road would quite lead this far north, though. This short piece is done with humor, with grace, and with the boys. Gotta love a partner who makes his lover choose between food and sex;)

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky & Hutch

Fic Link: http://meandthee.shahrazad.net/display.php?storyid=405

Why this must be read: How long can a man hold out hope? How long can he survive alone, cut off from reality? How long can he suffer? Those are all questions one must ask in this story. Hutch is taken away, kidnapped, and put in isolation. Starsky searches, relentlessly hanging onto any lead he can find. But as the days stretch into months and the months stretch into years, how much hope is left? And as the time passes, Hutch's only companion is the visions he creates for himself. Even the pain is welcome because it reminds him he's still real.

And when he's found, when Starsky finally gets the lead that brings Hutch home, that's only the beginning of their journey. Hutch left as a whole man, a strong partner, and he came back broken, a ghost of himself, cut off from what is real. The scenes that are created in this story are heart-breaking. The scene that will always stay with me is Hutch, on the bathroom floor, counting the tiles.

He needed something familiar.

He needed something to do.

He needed his routine.

Hutch turned his attention to the floor and all the little tiles and began to count.

This story defies labels because at the heart of it is one truth. It's about two men trying to regain what was lost, both physically and mentally.

02:58 pm The Impossible by cgb (PG-13)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author's Website: Mind Games
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch

Why this must be read: cgb, who does ScullyAngst like no other, uses the non-event of the Millennium kiss as a catalyst for this gorgeous story. Structured around the contradictions of science fiction and truth, Scully's conflicted nature comes through, as well as what that means in relation to Mulder.

There are the Martians. )

Why this must be read: Because it's Hermione the way I like her: obsessed, driven and not a little bit scary. She's brilliant and she cares, so much so that she's mad, bad and dangerous. So much so that she's willing to cross the line and ultimately convinced that she's the only one good enough to do it, the only one who could.

Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Dan/Casey
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thete
Author Website: Teland
Why this must be read:

Well, to start off with, I will read anything that Te writes.  She mixes sexy with funny and gets right to the soul of a character in a few words.  Plus, she's damn fly.

"Shower" is one of those slice-of-time vignettes.  Dan's taking a shower, and doing what a million slash writers would have me believe men do every time they shower.  Which is to say, he's busy, and his mind is split between the woman in his kitchen and the man in his fantasies.  But, the hotness will not be denied, a sentiment with which a million several hundred many viewers Danny/Casey slashers will heartily agree.

It's a story about the juxtaposition of what you have and what you want.  It has fabulous Danny-voice, including this line: ) which screams Sorkin to me.  "Shower" has a great blend of introspection, humor, a little sexiness (cause of the wanking) and Te's usual fun writing style.

08:36 pm Golden Boy by Jungle Kitty (R)
Fandom: STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES
Pairing: Kirk / Gary Mitchell; Kirk / others; Kirk / Spock
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Invisible Planets
Why this must be read: This alternate universe tale is very different from the usual “Kirk and Spock find eternal love” stories (which I happen to be quite fond of). But it’s a compelling look at an entirely plausible background for Kirk, and how his youthful activities could come to affect his adult life profoundly.

The story invents a very interesting taboo, and explores what happens to those who break it. It’s extremely well-written, sparse and erotic in places and violent in places. And the end result is tragic, but completely believable.
