02:29 pm Divergence by Tinkerbell (NC-17)
Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK US
Pairing: Brian/Justin
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ragingpixie
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

A post-season 4 story that doesn't take any of the easy ways out, Divergence explores the possibility of estrangement between Brian and Justin, and the long-term consequences of Brian's cancer. Haunting would not be an inappropriate descriptor for this story, and the ending is a doozy. Still, Tink has a real talent for the B/J banter that's part of their appeal.

Why this must be read:

Though, like most of Nico's, this has a positive ending, along the way it's an unashamed "waaah", though those who don't usually like h/c might care to note that in this, most of the hurt is in the past. Vila, after Gauda Prime, has survived but doesn't much want to. So those of his friends who are dead (a clear majority, unsurprisingly) come from beyond to give him the gifts he'll need to regain his will to live. As usual she does a great Vila-voice, whether anguished or, as in this brief moment, ruefully funny:

05:26 pm You'd Forgotten Love Could Mean This by Delilah (PG 13)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Jack/Daniel
Author on LJ: don't know, again.

Why this must be read:

So, many moons ago, around the time of There But for the Grace of God, a lot (and I do mean a lot) of quantum mirror stories were written. This one, as you might have guessed, is just such a story. This story stands out above the others, in my opinion, because of the awesome way Delilah wrote it. That and she cut for spoilers ). She wrote it in an interweaving first/second person povs, Daniel in first and Jack in second. Both povs can feel limiting sometimes, but they never do here. With the switches every so often, you get an entire spectrum of storyline.

And! cut for more spoilers )

Why this must be read:

The short version: I want to rec this because I love Leo.

Leo is an elusive character for most people, I think. Fic land often, in my experience, either doesn't even try to understand him and how he remains both upright and incredibly cool (often just having him as the Grumpy Boss or whatever) or uses fic as an excuse to write a treatise about him. Neither works; Leo's not a caricature, but he's not one to psychoanalyse himself all the time either, especially not to someone else.

This fic, though... it's just a slice of life, a brief glimpse of Leo. But it's such a good glimpse, and so evocative in its sparcity, that you get more of Leo than you would in a whole plethora of essays.

It's also a beautifully written piece that's got a kind of achey sweetness to it that'll make you want to sit on a cliff top and watch the moon rise with someone you love, although that may just be me being weird. There's some nice ensemble-ness in there too, a real sense of a communal context for the fic which is all too rare in character pieces, and that's nice. Mostly, though, it's all about the Leo. 'Cause he's great.

Author on LJ: also none

Why this must be read:

I'm in a gen fic kind of mood today, so after the Leo rec, I thought I'd go for the opposite: a long, meaty, political piece.

And this is such a good political piece, too. It's a West Wing take on right to die legislation, an issue I happen to be particularly interested in, and just, wow. I can't think how you'd do it better than this. Given the subject, it's not a happy read (please note the understatement there, if such things are likely to be a problem for you), but seeing fiction deal with such important things so well really does make me happy.

It's also a delight to see that despite the strong political focus, characterisation isn't left behind. It's very like the show in that way, but the show at its best; there are people in this story too, people who laugh and cry and live. And that's pretty amazing too.

Fandom: POPSLASH (NSync)
Pairing: Justin/Lance
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic
Author Website: Venus In Furs
Why this must be read:

I was seriously going to think of something interesting and intellectual to say about the strikingly beautiful imagery in Synecdochic's writing, but made the mistake of going back to rereread the fic - and now my brain has melted, and I'm pretty much only capable of monosyllabic words, so all you are getting from me is that it's Justin, it's Lance, it's got good Chris and also some BDSM (more BD than SM).

How can you go past the picture this brings to mind )
