12:01 am Deep Water by Chris (NC-17)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website:http://www.taterville.com/
Why this must be read: This story exemplifies what a good AU can and should be. Taking place in Scotland long long ago, Duncan is still the man we can recognize with a difference. He's not immortal he's a each-uisge. Weaving Celtic legend with the world of highlander and a good amount of mystery added to the mix, Chris leads us on a wonderful journey through a world that's not quite the Highlander world.

Hopefully like me, you'll come to the end and say "Damn that make a good show."

This story is also a nominee in the Horror/Mystery in the TCBOO awards.

Why this must be read:

This is one of my favourite stories, and also one of the first I read when I got into Pop. If only everything could be this good.

More touches, more licks, and Chris' fingers still flutter restlessly over his body, dragging droplets of sticky citrus juice across his skin, until he smells like lime, can't sort himself out from the tart, tangy scent hanging heavy in the air around them.

It's like porny poetry.

02:55 pm A Heart For Every Fate by Destina (NC 17)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Jack/Daniel
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] destina
Author Website: Worlds Without Boundaries
Why this must be read:

It's an AU that takes off from the last moments of Torment of Tantalus. Awesome story, awesome spin off idea. It gets to this point, near the middle, where I felt myself get panicky along with Daniel and my heart lept to my throat and I felt myself wanting to climb up the walls. Amazing. And it's a great read for those who really like the episode based stories.

I really like the way Destina treats Daniel and Jack, as real characters. They never seem to fall out of character, into something different from the show.

So, without further ado, A Heart For Every Fate

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Jack/Daniel
Author on LJ: maybe?
Author Website: http://www.sharpetorium.info/slash/slash1.html
Why this must be read:

Not for the faint of heart, it's the rather chilling tale of alien experimentation on humans, namely Jack. I like it because she goes where few others have gone in the hurt!people fics. Not that everyone else is content with a hangnail, but still. She makes his recovery believable. She's very, very true to the characters and I feel like she has a firm grasp on who they are.

Also, Daniel's a bad ass (which is so like Daniel).

03:10 pm Sharp as a Knife by Jen (NC-17)
Fandom: OZ
Pairing: Ryan O'Reily/Nikolai Stanislofsky
Author on LJ: ???
Why this must be read: It's a sharp, entertaining spin on one of Oz's great matchups: O'Reily v. Stanislofsky

I wish Tom Fontana had kept Stanislofsky around longer. It was good for Ryan to have a worthy competitor in gamesmanship and manipulation. This story, beginning with "Sharp as a Knife" and running through "Control" shows a Ryan both threatened and intrigued by his adversary. We get an inside look at the always churning, ever alert brains of Oz's master players as they bob and weave, trying to stay ahead, stay on top, stay sane. And deal with the scariest foil of all: Claire Howell.

04:32 pm Transport, by Nicole Clevenger (PG13)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: None; Mal & Zoe gen
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author’s Website: Incomplete Catharsis
Why this must be read:

Several times this month, I’ve made mention of characters that I’ll read about, even though they don’t necessarily inspire me. What, then, you might be excused for asking, *does* really click with me in the Firefly universe?

I’ve always been fascinated with the war, and what the experience and memory of it means to both Mal and Zoe. This story takes place shortly after the battle of Serenity Valley, and is grim and heartbreakingly plausible.

In the Valley, they'd had no choice but to obey orders and lay down their weapons. He'd been the one to give the final word, in the end. Once those ships had risen dark and deadly above them, once it was clear that the only other way to end things was in their death. They'd been holding the ground until their angels came, but those so-called angels had turned their backs and left them to die. Up until that moment, she believed him when he'd said they could make it through. She'd had to, in order to keep going. She had no words to describe the feeling that settled in her when it came clear that mere belief wouldn't be enough to save them.

She suspected he didn't either. She'd watched his eyes when he gave the order for surrender. Fractured pieces inside a bleeding shell of a body, still walking and breathing but inside nothing but numb. Numb that led them into Alliance custody, barely feeling the cold metal of the handcuffs slapped on their wrists. Numb that buzzed in their ears, making it hard to keep their heads up but a whole lot easier to endure their preliminary processing once on board the transport. Their captors took obvious enjoyment in making the whole thing as debasing as they could, but the numb gave them a place to escape to.

Trouble with numb, though -a person didn't always make it back out.

Fandom: THE O.C.
Pairing: Seth/Ryan
Authors on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lifeinwords
Author Website: http://students.whitman.edu/~jacobstr/lifeinwords/main.htm

Why this must be read:

This is fic from the early days of the fandom (August 2003), but I remember it vividly because it contains some absolutely exquisite use of language. Despite my decided partiality to Ryan-centric fic, the Seth point-of-view in this story captured me. The mesmerizing use of the terminology and imagery of skating perfectly conveys Seth's loneliness--and his longing for Ryan. I'll let the words speak for themselves:

Seth can’t stop watching the small of his back peeking out from his jeans. He can see it now, and squints to ignore the skin next to it. He sinks down, knees shaky, and lets himself pump up right next to them, so close he can feel Ryan’s heat on his face. Then he’s coming down fast, keeping the momentum and heading blind for the wall. That firm smooth expanse is all he can see, gold and sweating in the summer heat, marked with dips and hills and the rocking jumps of vertebrae that Seth wants to ride.

Gorgeous.
