Why this must be read

This is the first in a trilogy of stories. Please do follow the links at the end of each story to read the next as the other two are wonderful. This story has a meeting between Solo and Doyle in a hospital, as they anxiously wait for news of their partner's conditions. It's a wistful, beautiful, bittersweet fic, with great characterisations of both Solo and Doyle. And the setting feels intimate. The relationship between both sets of partners is really nicely shown, despite it only featuring half of each. Really please read these three stories. My favourite is actually the final one, "People Bending Broken Rules," but you need to read all three to enjoy them properly, so I'm reccing the first one for that reason.

11:56 am Food for Thought by LisaH (Rated NC-17)
Fandom: Oz
Pairing: Beecher/Keller
Author on LJ: lisaluvsblair
Author website: don't know
Why this must be read:

One, because of how it captures the sense of daily life in Oz, the monotony of it all and how that can be relieved via something as mundane as satisfying the craving for a favorite kind of food:

Toby knew that was the main problem - Chris' real gripe was about being denied something, and this just happened to be his topic of the week. Everyone went through it -just last week he thought O'Reily was going to lose it, jonesing for a certain kind of pastrami sandwich he used to get all the time. He talked about it non-stop for two days until everyone threatened to beat the crap out of him if he didn't shut up. Food was a very popular subject around here, and one that many obsessed on. Not just because their usual fare was so plain and monotonous, but also because it could be such a gratifying and even sensual experience, to eat or drink something that you really loved, and it often brought up good memories, like Chris' weekend drives with his mom.

And two, because of what happens when the boys dare to eat a peach. Even if all-out smut didn't happen, I think this one would warrant that NC-17 rating just because of the way Toby cleans Chris up. Smut does happen, however, and it's a good thing. *g*

02:05 pm The Jewel of Calix by Kernezelda (PG)
Fandom BLAKES7
Pairing: (sort of) Vila-OFC
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kernezelda
Author Website: http://www.watchfarscape.com
Why this must be read:
Despite ample evidence that Blakes7 is a tragic romance set against a wartime background--sort of like "For Whom the Bell Tolls"* some sick perverts insist on treating it as some sort of science fiction adventure. I ask you.

Nevertheless, one of the pleasures of science fiction is world-building, and Kernezelda's Ficathon story does a wonderful job of making Calix real. The story is set in S3 (so Cally is still available), and there's a spirit of high adventure as "Vils Reslat" and his "assistant, Chevron" have a profitable day out (although a far more enjoyable one for Vila). Everyone--especially Vilaphiles--will enjoy Suave!Vila's chance to play the Cary Grant role.

*You say "A Farewell to Arms"? Thank you, Travis, you can put your hand down now.
