Hey all!

I'm Ashley, or [livejournal.com profile] sasha_b , your friendly neighborhood Horatio Hornblower reccer for Nov.  Thanks to Dana for accepting me!

I am relatively new to the Hornblower Fanfic world, but have been writing myself for about two years now.  I do HH, Buffy, and King Arthur (the Bruckheimer version).  I am a huge William Bush fan, so you will find a lot of my recs include him.  I like het and slash pairings so I will try to include both.  So with no further ado, I present my first rec for November.

Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Hornblower/William Bush/Andre Cotard
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] la_reine_bleu
Author Website: is linked on her lj page
Why this must be read:  Oh, lord.  There's a lot of reasons.  My personal reason being, William Bush done right.  And Hornblower realizing just how important he is to him.  It's also really really hot smut.  :)  But not pwp by any stretch of the means.  Characters developed, cute dialog, and like I said, HH/WB/AC smut.  A lovely read for anytime one needs a pick me up!  It is descriptive, so people easily shocked might wanna skip this one.

I hope you all enjoy it!

Why this must be read:

Ryan is one of Seth’s vital organs. Seth’s going to die without him, and it’s easier to run away than to sit around and watch the making of his own corpse. )

01:49 pm Deixado Va (from The Massage Series) by fra (R/NC17)
Fandom: Stargate SG1
Pairing: Jack/Daniel
Author on LJ:
Author Website:

Why this must be read: This is the first part of an AU series where Jack is a closeted military man who tries to fight his attraction to his masseur, Daniel. Although the sequels are good, I think this is the best of the lot. And it is the hottest. There is one thing you can say about unresolved sexual tension -- when it threatens to bubble over, it takes a skilled writer to either make it simmer for a few more moments or make it overflow and scald the readers by its heat. I think, it works very well because of all the barriers between these two. The author was very very good in conveying the angst that was inherent in Jack's repression as well as the confusion of what Daniel thought was unrequited attraction/love. So when one breaches the gap between them, their relationship is taken apart and redefined.

Into something even more interesting.

Deixado Va (Massage 1). And you can click on the link at the bottom to get to the next part of the series.

P.S. I'm your SG driver for November. I'm a Jack/Daniel-holic so don't expect anything gen or het.

05:11 pm Doppelganger by Chris J and Jawamonkey (R)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Joey/Justin, Wade/OMC.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cjmarlowe and [livejournal.com profile] jawamonkey
Author Website: -the-studio- and this big mix

Why this must be read:

It's got an original and fairly thought-provoking premise, a happy ending, some lovely sexual tension and Wade. I like Wade.

"Yeah, okay," he said quietly after a moment, realizing that Justin needed a response. "Yeah, you're right. But I got tomorrow morning covered, those couple of radio things, so you can rest that precious voice of yours, okay? I'll ... make you tea and stuff."

It all came out sounding pretty natural, all things considered, J thought. After all this time the jealousy wasn't as harsh as it had once been, but he was never able to forget that Justin was the singer, the performer, and he ... wasn't.

It was God's way of keeping balance in the universe, he guessed. Or some kind of ultimate irony. Twin boys, identical down to their eyelashes and chapped lips and freckles on their backs; one that loved and lived and breathed music, the other that didn't. One that had charisma and stage presence and a truly amazing voice, the other that didn't.

Unfortunately, fate had determined that they couldn't, or shouldn't, be found in the same person.

Doppelganger

What you can expect this month: AUs. Wadeslash. Emslash. Othersidecharacterslash. Sync and Boys and the occasional O-Towner. Fluff.

What you most probably won't get: Het. Gen. Darkdarkdarkfic.

05:39 pm Beyond Reproach by Lily (NC-17)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Chris/Lance, JC/Justin.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lilysaid
Author Website: improvidence.net
Why this must be read:

A really well-done college AU is rare, but here it it, and it's great. Chris is a pierced art student and Lance is the president of the Baptist Student Union. Lance's Christianity is well-treated, and I have a soft spot for rebels.

"And that's Chris Kirkpatrick, my roommate," he interrupted, pointing into the living room. "He's a senior. Art major."

Lance stepped cautiously into Chris' area and received a sharp look from the guy at the easel, a young man with a bandanna tied around his head. A mop of tiny black braids stuck out from underneath, and when Chris finally gave a clipped, "Hi. Nice to meet you," Lance could see the glint of something silver in his tongue. His ears both held multiple piercings.

"Yeah," Lance replied stiffly, and stepped back slowly.

06:07 pm Four A.M. by Wintertime (PG)
Hello, this is Sophia Prester, and I'll be recommending CSI fics for the month of November. Although Nick/Greg and Grissom/Nick are probably my favorite pairings you'll see a variety of slash and het pairings this month (along with plenty of gen), and genres ranging from knock-down-drag-out angst to side-splitting comedy.

Fandom: CSI
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] always_winter
Author Website:http://www.geocities.com/ofmoonbeams/
Why this must be read:

Wintertime is easily one of my very favorite CSI authors, and it took me a while to figure out which of her fics to rec first. There's just so much to choose from--harrowing case-files, zany comedy, slice-of-life character studies, light'n'fluffy romance, dark'n'twisted romance--that you shouldn't be surprised to see another story or two of hers recommended later this month.

For right now, since we're just one day past Halloween, I thought I'd start with Four A.M.. It's short, sad, and perfectly in keeping in the season.

Hello, I'm Altariel, and I'll be steering the Trek Van this month, reccing stories based on ST: DS9. Given my preoccupation with a certain Cardassian tailor, you may find that many of these stories are best enjoyed with a cup of red leaf tea, but I'll try to range a little further than my usual obsessions.

Fandom: STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE
Pairing: Garak/Bashir
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mevennen
Author Website: Arcady
Why this must be read:

What happens when fictional characters write fanfiction? Witty dialogue, sharp characterizations, and side-splitting use of reviews.

'Me? Write a novel?'

'Yes, why not?' Bashir said. 'After all, with all the experience you've had, you must have the material for a dozen novels, at least.'

'I might manage a short vignette,' I said, dryly.

10:51 pm The Cayo Hueso Affair By Nan Mack (PG-13)
Open channel D. [livejournal.com profile] st_crispins here to rec Man from U.N.C.L.E. stories for the month of November. MFU is arguably the oldest media fandom, pre-dating even ST: TOS. Two months ago, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the series premiere.

That said, a lot of MFU fanfic has appeared in print zines and still does. Some of my own favorite stories are not online. I will be reccing both slash and gen, but I do tend to prefer stories that present Solo and Kuryakin realistically, and I enjoy seeing them function within the context of the U.N.C.L.E. organization.

Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: No.
Author website: None, but this story can be found on www.File40.net.
Why this must be read:

Most folks in MFU fandom know Nan Mack as my collaborator for the Escape from New York/MFU crossover universe, but she’s written some pretty memorable stories on her own.

Like this one, for example. Set sometime after the Return movie, we find a melancholy Solo and a resigned Kuryakin traveling to Key West on what appears to be a “milk run.” There, they bump into Chris Larson, the little boy from “The Finny Foot Affair” now grown, and an embittered Gervaise Ravel from “The Quadripartite Affair” and “The Giuoco Piano Affair” who has a few scores to settle. As we soon discover, a lot can happen in twenty years.

This is a tough, absorbing, complicated affair with a great plot and a lot of heart (read: Solo angst). The details and background atmosphere are superb (Key West is Nan’s favorite place), the voices are spot on, and there are some very enjoyable characters, most notably a scary young sociopath named Joey who has an interesting relationship with Gervaise.

Here’s Solo discussing Chris with Kuryakin and confronting some sad truths about being a field agent:

Hi, I'm Clio. I'll be your Highlander rec'er for the month of November. Remember to keep all your appendages that you wish to keep inside the vehicle. There will be no stops made to pick up a missing body part. Please don't try and pet the Methos, he's likely to bite.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ciceqi
Author Website: Blood, Love & Rhetoric
Why this must be read:

This will be the first of three stories I rec by this author during my turn as the Highlander driver. I've finally decided that if I don't rec the stories I have in mind no one will, hence my volunteering. All of them are too good to not be read. They all rank in my top ten faves for this fandom. Having said that I'll get on with this rec.

A little synopsis to start out with here: In this story Methos witnesses first hand how Immortals enter this world and why they are all orphans. (Nothing to do with the second movie. Think Greek mythology and a variation on Dionysis' birth.) That is just the beginning of this story, however. Methos then has to deal with the fall-out from this miracle he witnessed.

This story will make you forget the origin story in the second movie. After reading it, in my head, this became how Immortals come into this world. It is that good, it totally and completely subverted canon for me. As I mentioned above if you know anything about Dionysis and the myth of his birth you'll have a little clue to where it's going. I honestly can't believe no one had rec'd this story yet. It is what made me want to take a turn here rec'ing Highlander. This story to me is a classic in the fandom and one not to be missed.
