11:45 am The Ruse by Em Brunson (R)
Fandom: CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION
Pairing: Nick Stokes/Gil Grissom
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] janissa11
Author Website: Emland
Why this must be read:

Continuing with the lighter theme, I bring you this funny piece by Em Brunson. Em's usually better known for her hurt comfort and her angst, which is dark and bitter sweet, but this one makes me smile. It's a standard trope - the CSI equivalent of 'aliens made them do it' - but it's handled well with Em's deft touch. It's told from Nick's perspective, and Nick is severely out of his depth, but that just makes it funnier. This is early CSI, when Nick was desperate for Gil's approval and Gil was more indulgent than bitter about it.

A sample. )

12:10 pm Living Among The Breakage, by Demon Faith (PG13)
Fandom: CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION
Pairing: Nick Stokes/Greg Sanders
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] demon_faith
Author Website: Faith of the Heart
Why this must be read:

Another product of the A Thousand Whispers: The CSI T.S. Eliot Challenge, which produced some very good stories. This story is all about Nick, through four major scenes in his life, and is absolutely heartbreaking, but in such a good way. So often Nick and Greg fic seems to focus on Nick's issues being around being with a man instead of rooted in his experiences, but this was a wonderful examination of the alternatives and and when I first read it reduced me to tears.

Nick's characterisation is believably extrapolated from the show, touching on the insecurity that George Eads often brings to the character, and roots that trait in canon revelations. And yet Nick still shines through - still the good guy, still retaining enough compassion for others in spite of what he sees every day and in spite of the horrors he has lived through.

He had never before realised how quiet his house could be. )

Fandom: LoTRIPS
Pairing: Billy/Dom
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] minervacat
Author Website: When the Floods Roll Back

Why this story must be read: Minervacat summarizes it with "Billy listens to the loudspeaker litany of cities he's visited and cities he's never seen, and he wonders why he chose Los Angeles to run to." This fic is a perfect window in time to where Billy and Dom might be right now, and is not to be missed.

05:08 pm Escape by Moonloon (PG-13)
Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Pairing: Warren/Ethan Rayne
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] maryavatar
Author Website: Amused and Abused
Why this must be read:

Firstly, because the pairing Warren/Ethan is so unusual as to be essential. ;) Written in answer to a challenge at the Warren Ficathon (which I encourage everyone to explore - there are some great fics there that I won't have a chance to rec), this fic answers extremely well the challenge: Warren/Ethan, darkfic. A fic that opens in hell and continues in a magical prison is certain to fulfill the dark aspect of the challenge, and the Warren/Ethan is extremely amusing, chiefly due to Moonloon's skill in capturing Ethan's sly, seductive voice so very accurately. There is also a lot of nudity, and who can resist a naked Warren?

Mmmm, I don't normally like hairy boys, but that's very tempting. )

07:28 pm Saving the Day by Karen [PG]
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read: Because so often in TS fic, we loose sight of the Blair who fought off Kincaid's siege. The one who used a crane's hook to knock out a bad guy. This Blair is resourceful, not fearless but willing to keep fighting despite the fear. He uses anything and everything that comes to hand. This time Jim has to stay in the truck (figuratively speaking) and his reaction to hearing Blair in danger are priceless. And the supporting characters are perfect in their variety of reactions to the Blair/Jim dynamic.
Plus it's damn funny. )

Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Variations on Horatio/Archie/Bush
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jenavira
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:
This is basically a collection of short drabbles, and all of them are incredibly sweet. I love them because they convey the relationships realistically, and they don't need smut (much as I love it) to do that. They're all short and sweet and flow well together, even though they're not meant to all come right after one another. The collection of them all gives us a chance to see all sorts of ways this relationship could be.
