12:38 am American Girl, by S. N. Kastle (PG)
Fandom: WEST WING
Pairing: Josh/Sam, Donna/OFC
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wearemany
Author Website: http://www.wearemany.net
Why this must be read:

This is one I meant to rec last time I was driving the West Wing van, but I ended up reccing what might as well be called the prequel instead. This one is almost the Donna point of view on Chance to Make It Real, but is also a whole lot more than that. It's terribly, terribly real, and features one of the best and most interesting original characters I've seen in the fandom.

Actually, I must confess that I was a little freaked out by how real it felt when I finally read it; I don't tend to like Donna much, and was thoroughly sceptical that it could be as good as I was told, but then I found myself going "OMG... that is so. true." and realised that I not only really felt like I understood Donna in this, but was caring a whole lot about what happened with her. I personally happen to like that, especially when the story is also complex, refreshingly original, and really well written. Go and read, yo.

There's also two more stories in the series, Decorated by Ellen M, and Funny Girl. They're good too, but you need this one first in order for them to make sense, cause otherwise you won't know who the people are an' stuff. :)

09:06 am My Tailor Is Rich by Tazey (R)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: John/Aeryn
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tazey
Author's Webpage: Fanfiction Archive

Why this must be read:

A funny little story for your Saturday morning. John, Aeryn, a wedding to go to and clothing that neither of them like. Complications arise from the clothing and John is definitely not a domestic goddess. Good dialogue and a premise that still makes me giggle when I re-read it.

Well...you'll see what I mean when you read it. Enjoy!

06:05 pm Internal Affairs by Beth H. (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth
Author Website: Madwoman in the Basement

Why this must be read:
I tend to like future fics, and this is a good example of a future dS story not set in Canada. This story is on the angsty side, so I think some people might have overlooked the fine RayK POV and canon feel of the casework. Fraser is very Fraser-like in this story. Inveterate Vecchio fans might have skipped this one, too, and I would say to them to try to view this as an AU and give the story a chance (in this fic, RayK goes undercover to investigate Vecchio). "Internal Affairs" feels emotionally true to me, even if it's not light and fluffy. Part of the appeal of canon due South is that dance between comedy and drama, and this story illustrates how duty places a heavy burden on the honorable. Also, there are a number of long, plotty stories in this fandom, but not so many get the feel of a cop's life right.

08:28 pm Krieger's Ahnung, by MacGeorge (NC-17)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] macgeorge1
Author Website: MacGeorge's Madness

Why this must be read: MacGeorge has been one of the leading writers in Highlander fandom since the early days with good reason. She has a great talent for plot and characterisation and brings a maturity and intelligence to all her stories. This is one of her newer stories and one of my favourites, first published in the wonderful 'Futures Without End IV' zine.

Krieger's Ahnung (Warrior's Foreboding) is set right after the third Highlander movie, Endgame and brings Duncan and Methos together in a way that works on every level. It moves from the aftermath of Connor's death in New York to its climax in Duncan's birthplace, Glenfinnan, from pain and grief to acceptance, understanding and love. It's Duncan's journey out of Endgame's darkness, with Methos where he belongs - right by his side.

It's beautifully written, literate and true to all the characters. And it has one of the best written sword fights I've ever read.

Have a little taste... )

10:55 pm Borrowed Time by Beth and Mystic Whim (R?)
Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Author on LJ: Not that I can find
Author Website: The Pits Archive
Why this must be read: I thought, after all the short and sweet fics, I should try archiving a longer length one. And I stumbled across Borrowed Time in my search. I felt this was very powerful, and, while it was painful to read at times, I loved the boys for their strengths, and weaknesses. I’ve never had to see someone suffering from cancer first hand, so I have no idea if everything is accurate, but … it felt like it to me, from what little I know.

This is very angsty, and takes a while to read, but I feel so much richer for having read it. It gets a little serious and, not exactly soapy, but sentimental at times, but it really makes you think and understand what people are saying and why. The partnership is so strong throughout and it’s empowering to think of people like Starsky and Hutch battling on, and with smiles on their faces.

There are quite a lot of characters compared to some fics, but each character is an individual, and no less important and real. If I had the time tonight, I would read it properly again, but I don’t, so I hope I’ve found the best excerpt I can from my skim through. :) I know what I’ll be doing first thing tomorrow, though.
