Fandom: CSI Pairing: none, slightly implied Greg/Sara Author on LJ: helsinkibabyAuthor Website: The Band GazeboWhy this must be read:I've seen Greg written as a dweeb, a nerd, a surferdude, a flaming queen, an Ultimate High Maintenance boyfriend, and an overgrown 12-year-old; but rarely have I seen him written as simply a real person. In this piece, not only is he real, and fully Greg, he's also vulnerable and sweet in just the right amount to rip your heart out, without also serving it back to you dripping with too much honey. And Sara is, well, Sara. With a cigarette. Exactly so. helsinkibaby writes more Warrick/Sara than other CSIfic, but don't let that prevent you from checking out the rest of her stuff; bluntly, it's good. Not AloneOh, and the ubiquitous intro: katuah here, I'll be driving the CSI crack_van this month. And that means even I don't know for sure what I'll rec yet, although it would be safe to say, variety will be, um, in evidence. (heh.) I plan to highlight some rarer CSI fic types & pairings, too. So buckle up and hang on!

Fandom: SILMARILLION Pairing: None Author on LJ: joannie_mAuthor Website: The GrayWays (tho' I can't make the links work); her stories are also at fanfiction.netWhy this must be read: Maglor is one of the most frequently-written Silmarillion characters. I think one of the reasons he fascinates writers is that he's a gifted musician & singer, forced by circumstances to live the life of a warrior. The destruction of the beautiful city of Alqualonde in Aman (the Paradise where the gods dwell), with the massacre of most of its inhabitants, is the first of several terrible deeds done by his family. Joan's moving & thought-provoking vignette asks what an artist might make of the aftermath of the massacre. The poetic writing style is used to good effect to contrast with the horror of the subject matter. A brief taster... ( ...under the cut )Alqualonde[Edited to add ff.net link and LJ user info]

Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS Pairing: Merry/Pippin Author on lj: puddle_tookAuthor website: Unknown Why this must be read: It is so rare, for me, that second-person POV actually *works* in fic. This one does. Five smallish scenes capture Merry having a "big-feeling" for Pippin. You would like to stop walking and have this conversation on a log or on the ground, but you have a feeling Gandalf wouldn't understand. So you reach for Pippin's hand instead and keep the pace. "If you tell me what I've done, I can tell you I didn't mean it and then you'll be yourself again. Right, Pip?"Too Big

Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER Pairing: slight Horatio/Archie Author on LJ: tanacawyrAuthor Website: http://www.io.com/~cortese/stories/Why this must be read: Set within a missing gap of time in "The Duchess and the Devil," after the rescue mission in the storm but before Horatio's decision to return to Ferrol, this is really a story about homecoming. When the survivors of the rescue mission come aboard the Indefatigable, it is the first time Archie Kennedy has been at sea in over two years. tanacawyr captures perfectly the sense of isolation and profound culture shock Archie experiences upon returning to the crowded and bustling ship. That sounds so simple, but this story is far from that; it's moody and atmospheric and tanacawyr's prose is simply stunning. The scent and sound and feel of the ship, the feather-light feeling of a dream, all are rendered to perfection to create a story that is hauntingly beautiful. Ghost Stories

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Ryan/Caleb Author on LJ: ctoanAuthor Website: None that I know of Why this must be read: Occasionally, fanfiction has to go to dirty, wrong places. That’s what this story does – Caleb is Kirsten’s real estate mogul father, and his interest in Ryan is not benign. This is set in an undetermined future when Ryan works as an architect for the Newport Group, Caleb’s company. An excerpt: Once the clients left the room, there was much backslapping and handshaking. This was an important client, and they had almost lost them. Caleb put his arm around Ryan's shoulders. "Good job."
Ryan smiled back at Caleb. But Caleb let his arm linger just a little bit too long, and gave Ryan's shoulder a squeeze that felt … off. Then the moment passed and Caleb was off congratulating someone else, and Ryan wondered if he'd imagined it.Lonely - Mood: drained

Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: Duncan MacLeod/Methos Author on LJ: unknown Author Website:The Lunatic FringeWhy this must be read: Call me an utter, hopeless romantic. I never tire of seeing the dance between Methos and Duncan as they figure out how they feel about each other, and how they find out that the other returns such feelings. This story is a wondrous romantic shot in the arm: not a little schmoop in places, but with clever and witty dialogue, and a long courtship laboring under that most satisfying of devices…misunderstanding. The audience is, of course, in on the whole thing. Duncan is quite a bit softer here than he is usually found, but he fits the story, and what character would be worth their salt if they didn't go a little (or a lot) weak-knee'd when daunted by unrequited love? A note about my guess at the rating: the R was mostly for language, there is very little violence, and all the sex/serious romance happens off-screen. ( The Library )The Library

Hi! Happy 2005. I'm Aline and I'm driving the Oz bus for the whole month! All aboard and let's go! Fandom:OZ Pairing: Beecher/Keller Author on LJ: rileycAuthor Website:Riley Cannon's FodderWhy this must be read: It's a wonderful story. RileyC writes extraordinary AUs, and AWESOME canon and this fic is just heartbreaking and at the same time wonderfully comforting. We're at the end of season 5 ("Impotence"); Toby sacrificed everything to see Keller again and the story starts here; Keller's back from the courtroom and... But instead of the very (too) short scene Tom Fontana gave us, RileyC writes an awesome fic, exploring Keller's mind, his sadness, his despair, his longing and showing us what happens *after* the kiss -what we weren't given to see and it's exactly what I imagine. And the writing is perfect. And it didn't matter that he had rehearsed this moment so many times in his head, planned what he was going to say -- no amount of preparation would have been enough, and there *were* no words that needed to be said. For a long moment Chris just looked at him, recommitting every feature to memory and feeling a profound joy in that. There had been so many nights, here and away at Cedar Junction, that he had lain awake at night trying to recall Toby’s face, so afraid he was going to forget what he looked like. He needed to see Toby smile, though; too often he remembered him looking sad and wounded. He loved Toby's smile, the way it lit up his whole face and made you feel like you were watching the sun come out after a cold, rainy day.Aaaah! My little heart clenches every time I read this and I'm sure yours will too! So go! Read! Where angels fear to tread
