Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Sydney/Sark & Julia/Simon
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] auchic
Author Website:Unknown
Why this must be read: There aren’t many good stories that reflect on Sydney portraying Julia while Sark is around, who would immediately not believe the lie. Although this story deals with Sydney as Julia in an attempt to get information out of Simon there is heated passion between her and Sark. Eventually leading to a surprising twist.

It’s very sexy, very hot and most of all written perfectly. Just purely delicious.

Why this must be read:

From the very first conversation between Natalie, Dan, and Casey this reads like an episode from the series. Upon the initial reading though, it's a wonderful example of the deep friendship between Dan and Casey. The author nails the characters - not only their voices, but their actions and all those things that make them great (i.e. Casey's inability to see things that are right in front of his face, Dan's battle to be it for someone, sometimes everyone).

It's very hard to believe that this was the first story in this fandom by the author because it nails everything.

10:22 am Of Elves and Men by Tenshi no Korin (R)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: Aragorn/Legolas
Author on lj: Unknown
Author website: bishonenink
Why this must be read: "In that fading home of immortal elves, Lothlorien, Legolas is distracted by mortal things, in particular Aragorn." Legolas makes some observations about Aragorn and Aragorn does some observing of his own. What startles me the most about this piece of fic is how, even though the observations are sometimes very obvious, they never feel that way at all-- What could have become cliché in less able hands is original and *true* when done by this author (and a few of the observations are quite amusing). It's not the sex here that is the focus of the piece (although that's nice), but rather Legolas' almost stream-of-consciousness narration and the interaction between the Elf and the Man.

But there is an inertia to our lives that is not like to the pendulum of men's hearts, the motion of age and death and years. In Rivendell are kept the shards of a broken sword, but men, and most of all, you, are the ones who keep the shattering of it.

Why this must be read:

A completely different take on a scene from the well-known tale of Beren & Luthien -- a vignette this time. I'm a great fan of stories that essay the enemy's viewpoint, and 'Falling' is a good example. It's intriguing to see Luthien & Huan through the eyes -- and nose -- of Draugluin, Sauron's chief werewolf. The author also gives us some plausible speculations into the possible origins of Tolkien's werewolves. Still more impressively, the story forces the reader to empathise with a creature dismissed as Evil Cannon Fodder in the original texts, so that the inevitable end becomes strangely moving.

Why this must be read:
One of the things I'm trying for this month is a bit of variety in the genre of the fics I rec. As much as I (as with most of the rest of fandom) love the NC-17 or R rated slash fics, sometimes you want something a little different. Or maybe you're on for a quick fix over lunch at work and don't dare read your regular porn. Or perhaps you just want a quick laugh or angst. That's what I'm trying to provide this month.

That said, I'm a sucker for fics that are from the POV of a minor character and reflecting on the major character(s). Which is what I love about this. From Rafe's POV on the mishaps of his first time partnered with Blair. One thing I like is that Rafe has always come across as the junior partner in his partnership with Brown on the show, so here we get to see him stepping up into the senior role for a period of time. Not to mention his angst for when things go wrong on his watch.

Why this must be read:

Welcome to the jungle!

Zen&nancy know better than most how to deliver the twisted and the kinky, the dirty and the simply fucked up, and I couldn't resist bending the crack_van rules just a little in order to rec their most striking work. Technically, The Heroin Series is a work in progress, since more parts were planned and there is a vague plotline that has not been resolved. But it is also clear that since it has been years since this story was updated, it will probably never be completely finished. It will have to be considered as it stands, or not at all. In my opinion, the first parts are just as moving and terrifying and perversely hot whether you ever find out what will become of Alex in the end or not. But if you really don't like loose ends in a fic, don't say I didn't warn you. ;)

Actually, The Heroin Series is a story that comes with a lot of warnings, and rightly so. From drug use to rape, the dark underbelly of existence is depicted in graphic detail, and nothing is shied away from. The unflinching grittiness of this fic is what makes it so remarkable. When a heroin addicted Krycek finds his world invaded by a Mulder high on rage and lust for his sworn enemy, the results are not pretty, though, in spite of everything, they turn out to be unexpectedly romantic. Love and hate, lust and violence, fear and comfort - they rarely come together as explosively as they do here. Pop Guns n' Roses' Appetite for Destruction in the cd player, and enjoy.
