Fandom: Blakes 7 Pairing: Blake/Avon Author on LJ: blakefancierAuthor Website: not that I know Why this must be read: Zenia is a very lyrical writer. This is a PWP where what matters is the mood rather than anything anyone does. She's strong on sense of place and especially cold places, but here the cold is both literal and metaphorical. Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: None Author Website: Kat Allison's StoriesWhy this must be read: Man, the hardest part of this was choosing just one of Kat's stories to pimp. She's such a deft writer, and her take on immortality is thoughtful and splendid. I especially love her Methos-centric stories, but in the end this one is one of my favorites, for the way she uses Joe to show that Immortals aren't the only ones outside of time; in the end all of us are cut adrift in a world where our friends are dead, our homes and familiar places are gone, and everything we believed in has become an anachronism. "No real problems. Physically he's OK." She frowned, as if this were less than fully good news. "Another little episode of arrhythmia over the weekend, but we got that adjusted fairly easily. But those new prostheses we ordered for him? He's refusing to try them out. He just stays in that chair. And stays in his room, way more than he should. He has to get out and interact more, it's important in keeping him oriented. And he needs more exercise. I want him to give those prostheses a try."Last Set Before Closing

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978 Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo Author on LJ: damerelAuthor Website: Iphicles Slash Fiction SiteWhy this must be read: Sometimes, there's no substitute for angst and hot sex and men in tight leather pants. You will find the recommended daily requirement of these things in Jen's delightful "No Sanctuary." No Sanctuary

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003 Pairing: Kara/Lee, Kara/Zack Author on LJ: meyerlemonAuthor Website: None Why this must be read: When the world breaks, you'd think people would leave their preconceptions behind, but of course they don't. They hold onto them even more tightly. Lee is no exception, and he's so pretty when he angsts, especially when it's pointless. "and from Your face I will be hidden" is another beautiful vignette by meyerlemon. and from Your face I will be hidden

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK: UK Pairing: Stuart/Vince Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Shadow's Author Page on Across the PondWhy this must be read:Another road trip story, this piece has a lot of charm. Shadow uses alternating POVs, and while that would probably annoy me in a longer story, this one is short enough that it's just a device to get the reader inside both of their heads. Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: pogrebinAuthor’s Website: None Why this must be read: I love Pogrebin’s fics for their *depth*--the stories can be sparse, but they are never, ever *simple.* So too do I appreciate how the magic of other places and peoples are addressed, because of course not all magic is the kind taught at Hogwarts: spells and wands, moving photos and living chocolate frogs. There is wonder and magic in this story, as Padma and Parvati discover their heritage, and make their own choices. Aunty fixes her with cold black eyes, the red swipe of kum-kum at her forehead giving her the look, Padma thinks, of an ancient warrior. "Magic is not a plaything, like they teach you at that school. It is life." She drops her broom and places her right hand on Padma's chest and Padma feels it flowing between them, magic, magic, no far too weak a word for it. Jadu? No. Jeevan, slashes of Hindi burn themselves onto her eyes, jeevan, life, a thrumming from the depths of the jungle, deeper still until the trees are so dense that the leaves themselves become part of the darkness, rustling and palpable and reaching out with aching limbs. Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: weatherbyAuthor’s Website: flitterbloomWhy this must be read: The trouble with really unique characters is that they risk becoming a parody of themselves in fanfic. weatherby has *got* Luna Lovegood, and her Luna is beautiful, and sad, and full of delight. Even if you didn’t care for Luna in canon, I encourage you to give this story a chance. Her eyes were big and blue, and when she was very, very young, Luna thought that they were part of the sky. She thought that because she thought all grown-ups were tall enough to touch the sky, so it only made sense that Mummy would have put some in her eyes. She wore robes with lace on the bottom when she was feeling proper, and when she wasn't, which was almost always, she wore robes pieced together from pieces of old dress robes with swirly patterns and chequered patterns and boxy patterns and stripey patterns. They never matched, but Daddy said that was charm. Doorknobs

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Ron/Draco Author on LJ: hackthisAuthor’s Website: DysfunctionalWhy this must be read: I like angst, and darkness, and those stories that make my breath catch in my throat and my heart ache. This isn’t one of those stories. This is *better.* This is Ron and Draco, confused, and snarky, and absolutely delightful. “I can't shag you!” Ron shouts much too loudly, and he blushes when the books around him tell him to ‘shush.’
“I don't even fancy you,” he insists in a lower tone. “I actually hate you, you know.”
“Do you really think I care? I asked for a shag, not your thoughts on my post-Hogwarts prospects,” Malfoy points out.
“Yes—but but---“ Ron can’t stop sputtering. The whole situation is ridiculous. “Riddikulus,” he says suddenly.
Malfoy’s exasperation is clear. “I’m not a boggart.”
“Bugger.”
“I’m trying.” For Those With Anger Management Issues

Fandom: LOTRIPS Pairing: Viggo/various celebrities Author on LJ: anniesjAuthor Website: fanfic memories (may be flocked)Why this must be read:It's all circe_tigana's fault. She started her LOTRIPS AU entitled "Basketcase" early last year. Premise? The LOTR cast in high school. Specifically? Circe's Brandywine High. During Basketcase's run, it was an absolute pleasure to read. As of now, it's been flocked, but this gem still remains. Annie took the idea of Circe's Teen!Viggo and ran with it, leaving this in her wake. Even though this is a companion piece to Basketcase, it can be read alone and still be understood. One should note that it was this story that got me to friend the two of them in the first place. Yay for creativity. ( Excerpt. )Watching Puddles

Fandom: Farscape Pairing: vague mentioning of John/Aeryn and D'Argo/Chianna Author on LJ: apathoclesWhy this must be read:D'Argo is one of those great underused characters in Farscape fanfic. He is a jumbled mess of emotions and conflicting desires and in many ways has layered the best over the run of the show. The D'Argo of S4 is a far cry from the one we know from S1. He has grown up, matured and truly come into his own. Few know how to get into D'Argo's head like Apathy. Her skill in seeing the other side of the coin is never better represented than here. Variation on a theme number 2: Drinking Portsmouth dry Fandom: HORNBLOWER Pairing: Horatio/Archie Author on LJ: cimmerianwillowAuthor Website: Vinegar & Sugar Why this must be read:Part of the “The Laurel and the Rose” series, though this particular story can also be read separately, it revolves upon Horatio and Archie’s celebration after they receive word of their transfer to Captain Sawyer’s ship. How can anyone resist a drunken Horatio, silly and possessive by turns? And of course, Horatio, being Horatio, nothing is ever simple. What begins as a simple tale of debauchery takes another turn as the two men finally confront and lay to rest some of the ghosts that still linger between them. All in all, a lovely, thoughtful story. Liquor and Liquorish Lieutenants
