09:21 am All Things by Seema (PG)
Fandom: STAR TREK DS9
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] seemag
Author Website: Unbound
Why this must be read:

Set immediately after "What You Leave Behind", Jake Sisko describes what it was like growing up always wondering if *this* mission, *this* assignment, would be the last time he'd ever see his father. And now he's finally facing that reality. The character voice is pitch-perfect, and Seema strikes every emotional chord just right. It is impossible to read this and not be profoundly moved. The last line in particular gets me every time.

Why this must be read:

The yearning for love, thwarted, denied…. The hot, needy, sex. The “I think it’s going to be all right but I’m not quite sure” ending. The cool (no pun intended) action sequences in the snow.

The evocative writing. Just one little sentence captures something of the essence of this story:

“And the snow, falling fast and thick one moment, turning into polluted water on the streets the moment after, unforeseeable, making everything more difficult, more dirty.”

The next bit I suggest you read after you’ve read the fic:

05:01 pm The Story is an Abstraction by cgb (NC-17)
Fandom: OZ
Pairing: Beecher/Keller; Beecher/Original Male Character
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch
Author Website: mandysbitch.com
Why this must be read:

This story is a "remix" of a previously rec'ced story called "Chrysalis," by [livejournal.com profile] geneticallydead. The original story itself was a terrific "what if" take on Toby's life if he hadn't fallen for Chris' set-up and didn't break his parole. It was the author's way of rewriting the ending of "Oz" -- or at least, the Beecher/Keller story line.

The remix adds yet another dimension -- several more layers actually. The fanfic author turns Toby into an author, and delves into his thoughts and emotions as he tries to rewrite his own ending. The introduction of Owen, the original male character, adds yet another layer as he tries to determine the ending to the story, too.

To me, it turns out to be a suprisingly satisfying ending -- and that's a testament to the skill of the author (cgb) and her original character and the re-weaving of the story.

Pairing: Tim/Kon, Kon/Bruce

Why this must be read:

I have so, so, *so* much love for this series. It's actually kind of hard to write this rec, because I have to explain all the reasons *why* this series is so unbelievable, and--well, yes.

A warning--this series is an AU, and an AU triggered by a very central character's death. I don't want to say more than that, but consider yourself warned.

This series is about a lot of things. It's about Kon, and who he is once you get him away from the S-symbol; it's about Tim; it's about Bruce and how he deals with loss; it's about the whole Batfamily and how much love they have and how ubelievably fucked-up they are. It's about grief and pain and getting past the death of a loved one, and it's one of the most creative, beautiful stories I've ever read. Don't balk at the Kon/Bruce pairing; it totally *works* in this series.

I should also warn you that this is a tearjerker. I have reread this series so many times, and I still can't read The Letter (the second installment) without tearing up.

08:28 pm When Words Don't Mean A Thing by Cassandra Cohen (PG)
Fandom: THE OC
Pairing: Ryan/Seth
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] easywaffle69
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

I’m reccing this fic because of its originality. It’s not everyday that someone writes Seth as deaf. In fact this may be the only OC fic out there where one of the characters has a non-canon “disability”. But don’t quote me on that. Plus the story mentions Seth as a young boy and Caleb as not evil. These are bonuses, eh?
