Fandom: X-MEN MOVIEVERSE Pairing: None; but the story has adult sexual themes and both het and slash situations Author on LJ: minisinooAuthor Website: The Medicine WheelWhy this must be read:A novel-length work on the origins of Cyclops in which Minisinoo takes us from Scott Summers' days on the streets just before his arrival in Westchester up to the Senate Hearings at the start of the X-Men film. This is a prequel/background story to Minisinoo's current WIP, Grail (well worth reading--I'd rec it if it were completed). On the issue of pairings in this series: I thought about it, but my judgment is this is adult gen with m/m and m/f moments and UST (Scott/Jean, Scott/Warren, Xavier/Erik). It's not "shippy" enough to be anything other than gen, and rather dark gen at that. I'm not a huge Cyclops fan (despite how pretty he is), but this novel enticed me into reading other long stories by the author. Special: The Genesis of Cyclops(Here's a longer review by Eric Burns, of Websnark.)

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski Author on LJ: rustlerAuthor Website: Her Due South stories are up on Due Slash listed under "Rustler" Why this must be read:I like this one because we see Ray and Ben through Stella's eyes, and man, are they smokin' hot. Rustler handles the dialog and Stella's reaction perfectly. The Delivery

Fandom: ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO Pairing: none, consensually Author on LJ: hippedivaAuthor Website:Crow-Witch's CroftWarnings: prison and rapefic Why this must be read: There are those writers who are so good their stories are sublime, and Hippediva is one. She also has a very dark and disturbed muse, and you can see the results in this story. Set well before the events of the movie, CIA Agent Sands is in a Paraguayan prison. Hippediva lays out her story in brutal scenes punctuated by Sands's own dreams/hallucinations/delusions of performing musicals on stage. Yes, musicals. It's a surreal escape and a bizarre backdrop to the violence. This story may establish the origin of Sands's psychotic break, or his insanity may have already been there. Hippediva is too good to be explicit; infer what you will. This is the first story in her "Show Tunes" series, but you can read them all at the link below. Show Biz (and the Show Tunes series)

Fandom: ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO Pairing: Sands/El Mariachi Author on LJ: hippedivaAuthor Website:Crow-Witch's CroftWhy this must be read: And, so long as I'm recc-ing Hippediva, did I mention that she is the QUEEN of hot, twisted PWPs? I'm a plot slut myself, but who wouldn't get sucked into ( this? )It's hard to pick just one of her PWPs, and this one may not be as twisted as some, but here we have one pissed-off mariachi, conflicted about whether he wants to kill the irritating gringo or do him. Great stuff. Mexican StandoffShe has many other wonderful shorts stored in her memories, here.

Fandom: LOTRIPS Pairing: Gen: Orlando Bloom Author on LJ: minervacatAuthor Website: when the floods roll backWhy this must be read:Elizabethtown is being released this weekend (shut up, I'm excited even if you're not), and this is set just as Elizabethtown wraps. Orlando takes the long way home, and he did actually drive across the U.S. of A. after shooting wrapped, I hear, and if he didn't do it just as this story says he did, he should have. Min is a wonderful writer, with a control of emotion I find remarkable, and reading this is almost guilt-inducing: this is private. This is Orlando Bloom, and can't we give him any space at all? That, after all, is what he treasures in this story, and that is why it is a treasure. (And my slasher's heart insists that there's mad hot monkey sex after the last paragraph, but to have written it would have done the story a disservice and that's why it's not there. I repeat, shut up: they're my OTP.)you're great on the highway Feedback, even drive-by feedback, is a treasure, too.
