12:20 am Meeting the Challenge by Clayangel (PG-13)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Mal/Simon
Author on LJ: Clayangel
Author Website: "Land of Toast"

Why this Must be read: Simon's no nonsense approach, Mal's grumpiness. Both in character along with a great River voice. Also there's humor and some great conversation between the characters.

“About what you heard in the cargo bay...” he says quietly, and then pauses, actually looking Mal in the eye. “How much did you hear, anyway?”

Mal shrugs. “Enough.” He doesn’t want to be having this conversation now, doesn’t want to be having it ever for that matter, so before Simon can continue, Mal hurries to end it before it’s begun. “It don’t bother me none if you’re sly–“

“I’m not,” Simon interrupts, but Mal ignores him.

“–just stay away from me and we’re square, got it?”

Simon is blushing again, but he looks furious, and Mal takes a moment to wonder just which circus freak represents him. Something about that anger makes Mal want to play, even now when he wishes this conversation wasn’t happening.

“If you think,” Simon is spitting out, eyes hard, “that I would ever–“

“I must admit that I have a right fine ass,” Mal smiles, running a hand over the back of his pants, all light and sunshine now, giving the boy a shit eating grin when Simon cuts himself off, eyes inevitably darting down to where Mal is still caressing himself. “It’s no wonder that you fancy me, but I don’t swing that way, son.”

05:44 am Drawing Down the Moon by Scoradh (NC-17)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairings: Draco/Blaise; Harry/Draco; Ron/Hermione in the background
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scoradh
Author Website: The LJ [livejournal.com profile] rainspots is Scoradh's fic journal: here's a link to the list of stories

Why this must be read:
The next two recs are for my H/D-loving friends because I only dabble in that pairing.

I found this story charming, both humorous and touching, and I liked the way the author framed the story as a tale within a tale, told by an aged Ron Weasley.

06:46 pm We Never Touch but at Points by Karla_Yonit (PG)
Fandom: HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Bush/Côtard
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] karla_yonit
Author Website: N/A

Why this must be read: This vignette captures the duty-bound mind of Lieutenant Bush. At the beginning, it may be read as coming from the literary canon with its stark prose. Enter Major Côtard mispronouncing that certain name. How he usurps the orderly world, but the business of passion commences.

06:54 pm The Saga of Godboy and the Freak by Allecto (R)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Chris/Brian, AJ/JC
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] allecto
Author Website: Home of her scribblings
Why this must be read: Chris and Brian have both got such great senses of humour, that it's only fitting that this story is very very funny. It involves everyone from both groups, with wonderful scenes of various combinations of the guys interacting.

"It's the Fine Kirkpatrick Stalking abilities that are bugging me at the moment."
"I wasn't stalking you," Chris said. "I was checking you out."
"At the supermarket, and the IHOP, and the Waffle House, and the Outback?"
"You're hot," Chris said. "I liked to look."
"Um. Look, Chris. I'm flattered, really. And it's not that I'm, you know. Homophobic or anything. I mean, look at AJ. and Nick, and Kevin, and Howie... it's just. Not *all* boybanders are gay, you know?"
Chris gasped. "You."
"And I just got divorced, and--"
"They told me about you. In boyband boot camp, they *said* there were legends of the Lone Straight Danceboy, but I scoffed it off."

Fandom:  Queer as Folk: US
Pairing: Brian/Justin
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] soundczech  / [livejournal.com profile] themagichour
Author Website: blatant narcissism
Why this must be read:

A quiet story about Justin, photographs, and family.

The first time Justin finds a photo of himself in the loft, he stops and stares at it for a full five minutes, brain buzzing as he assures himself that yes, this really is happening.

07:48 pm Night Shift by Hank Shiffman (PG)
By the power vested in me (by the keys to the wheels), I hereby declare it to be Pilot Appreciation Night. A double feature, even!

Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: gen - Pilot
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: http://www.disordered.org/Farscape.html
Why this must be read:

Hank is known more in Farscape fandom for his vids and fabulous con reports, but this ficlet is a lovely look at Pilot - and there's precious little high-quality Pilot fic out there, which makes it doubly wonderful. Pilot's more than just a gigantic animatronic shell-head; he's not just another pretty face.

Pilot has soul.

So go, read, enjoy the peaceful easy feeling - because in my next rec, well, Pilot's a bit more... evOl complex. :D

07:50 pm The Cultivated Mind by Mosca (PG-13)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: gen - Pilot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mosca
Author Website: http://mosca.freeservers.com/fanfic/
Why this must be read:

Considering that Pilot was managed by no fewer than *four* oft-trampled puppeteers, and that his distinctive voice was a product of Lani Tupu's talent and the magic of ADR, it's a credit to everyone involved (and the vision of Jim Henson's Creature Shop) that such a gentle giant could become one of Farscape's most beloved characters.

Just as with the rest of the cast, however, Pilot didn't remain static for long. He quickly outgrew season 1's nervous uncertainty and youthful naivete; his experiences with Moya's crew, all-too-often as a helpless witness, left him no stranger to tragedy and the vagaries of fate.

The coolest thing about Pilot, though, was that every now and then he'd get a little wacky. (Usually he was possessed or under the influence of something, but I digress.) Like the others, he has his own dark secrets...

Mosca's fic takes place roundabout the end of Farscape's first season. To say anything more would ruin the tidbits of surprise that lay in store; so go, read, and if a little cackle escapes while you read - blame it on Pilot.

08:52 pm Oversight by April May (PG-13)
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Casey, Dan, pre-slash
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] aprilmay430
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Part of what gives the Sports Night universe life is its backstory; sketchy and never fully glimpsed, it nonetheless informs the characters, fleshes them out and gives depth and meaning to their relationships. We know, for example, that Dan and Casey have known one another for ten years, working together for five, at the time of the show, but we have no idea how they met, what brought them together, why they became friends, or how their deep intimacy (and I don't just mean from a slash perspective. Well, not entirely) developed. I have an especial fondness for stories that look at the boys' lives outside the show, in particular at their early days – at the lost years that we, the viewer, never saw. This is another story that was originally posted to the old Yahoo SN list; [livejournal.com profile] aprilmay430's recently put it on to [livejournal.com profile] snarchive and given it a new lease of life. It takes us back to the days of Casey's marriage, and Lone Star Sports, and gives us a glimpse of a very young and insecure Danny, and a Casey who … well. Is well on the way to being the Casey of Sports Night.

Oversight: It occurred to him, with more than a little guilt, that he had been so caught up in the demands of his job and family that he hadn't even noticed how unhappy his best friend had become, and how the hell had he let that happen?

08:52 pm The Body Thief by Russet McMillan (NC-17)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: Not known
Author Website: Russet McMillan's Fan Fiction

Why this must be read:
Russet McMillian is one of the classic authors of Sentinel fan fiction, and this is one of my favorites of her stories. Jim is grievously injured, almost dies, and when he wakes up, finds himself in the wrong body, the body of a young woman who had been in a coma for months. "The Body Thief" is a long, involving read of how he gets his life back, gets the bad guy, and figures out his feelings for Blair along the way. Not everyone enjoys a gender!swap story, but this one is really so much more. It makes wonderful use of the Sentinel mythology, is well-plotted, emotionally intense, sexy and just...really smart.

Go read and give the author some love:

10:39 pm Sweeten the Pot by Laura Smith (NC-17)
Fandom: VERONICA MARS
Pairing: Logan/Veronica/Weevil
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl
Author Website: A Multitude Of Voices
Why this must be read:

What could make a friendly poker game between Logan, Veronica, and Weevil even better?

Four words: truth-or-dare poker.

Hot may not be a strong enough word to describe this fic. If only this was what had happened on the show. And I'm not sure I've ever admired Veronica more then at the end of this fic.

11:02 pm Coals of fire by Executrix (NC-17)
Fandom: BLAKES 7

Pairing: BLAKE/AVON, Blake/OMC
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] executrix
Author Website:Executrix's Plotless Lagomorph Asylum
Why this must be read:

THIS isn't a conventional B7 story. No. It's one of my favourites though. Maybe it's not Executrix's best story? I don't know. To me, it's an amazing story.
THIS is Blake/Avon at their finest. An established relationship (more established B/A, please) with a believable Avon who *doesn't* border psychopathic, a very good charismatic Blake who gets more than he bargained for, two strong characters who sound alive and deal with their relationship as smartly as they can. And cheating. How does Avon react to cheating? Well, you'll have to go and read it! Because believe me, it's a (too short) nice change!

Coals of fire

PS: a few formatting problems but nothing that bothered me.
