Fandom: STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE Pairing: none Author on LJ: moscaAuthor Website: HomoneuroticaWhy this must be read: I'm bending my no-previously-recommended-authors rule (hey, it was more of a guideline) to bring this story by Mosca to your attention. DS9 features the longest-running, most realistic war arc of any Trek series. This brief vignette counts the cost of war through Odo's eyes. It also features my favourite side to Jake -- the writer -- and shows just how much he's matured throughout the series. A quiet, subtle piece which I return to often. Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: N/A Author on LJ: kerithwynAuthor Website: Offpanel.netWhy this must be read: Good fic about either Tora or Zatanna is virtually impossible to find. This dearth of fiction makes this story – which features them both – all the more precious. Spøkelse is the tale of how the two characters met, back before Tora joined the Justice League International. There's an intriguing plot, as well as some excellent character insight and interaction. It's also informative: I learnt far more about Zatanna from this story than I have from looking up her details elsewhere. Not just about the events that have affected her, but about who she is. This is a beautifully understated, evocative piece of writing that reads like it could come straight from the pages of canon. Spøkelse

Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT Pairing: Casey/Dan Author on LJ: mireille719 Author Website: Afternoons and Coffee SpoonsWhy this must be read: There are certain defining elements without which Sports Night would be just another television show: its intelligence, its humour, its compassion, its way with words … its two very very very hot male leads … The best of Sports Night fanfic reflects these qualities (and features the very very very hot male leads in scenarios to which network television simply doesn't pander). mireille719's writing is no exception and, in fact, may prove the rule. Mireille doesn't write much in this fandom; which only makes it all the more of a treat for us when she does. And this fic? How could I not pick this, out of all of her writing, on this day of all days? Chinese Restaurants, Mistletoe and the Spanish Inquisition Casey grinned, suddenly, and then said, "In case you were wondering, this is your Secret Santa present." Dan laughed. "It's a lot better than socks." Happy Christmas!

Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS Pairing: Gilraen/Arathorn, sort of Author on LJ: Not as far as I know Author Website: Not as far as I know Why this must be read:This is the story of how Gilraen comes to Rivendell and what she does once there. I've not seen it done before, and certainly not done as well as this. Last Hope

Fandom: POPSLASH Pairing: Howie/Nick, Justin/Lance Author on LJ: patchworkdragonAuthor Website: PatchworkDragon Why this must be read: The fifth poplash secret santa is unveiled tomorrow, but this is one of my favourites from last year. Another fun AU, this time a romantic space adventure! It has lovely paralleling between pairings, with people having to overcome issues to accept love. After showing the passengers to their quarters, Howie spoke to Nick as he walked to his own room. "Brian's quarters?" "It seemed the better choice. The bed is wider than the one in Kevin's quarters, and I had the feeling they might need some room to move around." Howie suppressed a smile, he'd given up on restraining Nick's voyeuristic tendencies but he tried to stop short of openly approving of them. "Besides," Nick continued, "Lance sort of talks like Brian. I like him." "Obviously, if you're on a first name basis already. You still miss Brian, don't you?" "Yeah, but we'll visit him after I get my body, right? So I can see him for real?" "Nick, after you change you can go anywhere you want. You won't need my permission. People aren't property." The sound of his door opening made it easy for him to pretend not to hear Nick's answer. "But I still want to be yours."( pictures )No Gravity to Fall

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: RayK/Fraser Author on LJ: serialkarma, lalejandraAuthor Website: Serialkarma's Due South stories in memories, ApostatizeWhy this must be read:Written for the Ink Challenge at ds_flashfiction, Ray writes messages on his hands. It's a quirky, cheeky, introspective habit that I can picture him having. Plus, Fraser's thoughts about it are very hot. I like that sometimes the messages are private or personal and sometimes they're meant specifically to rile Fraser up. That also seems like Ray. Sometimes Ray notices that Fraser notices, and sometimes Ray does it just to make Fraser notice – sometimes Ray writes C U R L I N G on the inside of one wrist and S U C K S on the inside of the other wrist. And the “SUCKS” is always slightly crooked, because he’s not ambidextrous, although he tries.D R A W N
