Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sprat
Author Website: Sprat's Fanfiction
Why this must be read: There's a ton of post-CotW fics in the Due South fandom. It's one of the most popular "sub-genres" of dS fanfic. A sub-sub-genre (errr...yeah) is the "post-CotW, Fraser and Ray are back in their respective countries and miserable without each other" fic. This is one of those, but with a twist involving Fraser's dead uncle who is determined that his nephew not meet his same fate.

If you're an angst fan--if you love when the author shoves your heart into your throat, you'll love this fic.

Note: Sprat rates this story "explicit", which I've translated into NC17.

02:32 pm Percy Weasley and the Gay Vampire Cult of Oliver Wood by December's Falling (PG13)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Oliver Wood/Percy Weasley
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: archive at FictionAlley
Why this must be read:

Okay, while none of the fics I've recced this month have had particularly over the top drama, this fic still serves as a nice break from all the angst in the world. Percy is traumatized by the war and the falling apart of the Ministry. He needs something new to believe in.

He became aware that the television in front of him for most of the day was filled with vapid trash. He did, however, rather like something American called "MTV". Most especially, he found he liked the "rock music". There was something inherently romantic about the rebellion involved.

Upon saying so to Oliver, he was greeted with a stare of disbelief.

"You want to be a rocker, do you?" Oliver kept laughing, so Percy scowled. "Oh, now, there's the look I remember from school. Bloody hell, Percy, you sure did take a shock. A year ago, or hell, a month ago, you would have perished the thought of being a rebel without a cause."

"Maybe," said Percy, "it was the Establishment that was inhibiting my perception."

06:08 pm Stykera: The Origin of Stark's Power by llScorpiusll (PG)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: None

Author Website: Sanctum of Scorpius
Why this must be read: One of the reasons I find Stark such a fascinating character is because we know so little about him. Canon gives us intriguing hints and tidbits about his people and his personal history, but leaves us with more questions than answers. This story fills one of those gaps beautifully by showing us a very young Stark being initiated as a Stykera. It not only gives us a believable portrait of Stark as a child, it also fleshes out the Banik culture and its Stykera mysticism in a well-realized way that captures the feel of a genuine shamanic tradition very nicely.

09:14 pm If the Valar by The Artful Dodger (G)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: Gen - Pippin, Gandalf

Why this must be read:

Because the world is really big and a hobbit - no matter how brave he is - is very small.

This is one night at Minas Tirith - a lull in the fighting where fear comes into play. It shows a very real worry of the hobbits - thrust from a safe life and with more and more familiar things stripped away from them, until Pippin finds himself in a strange city where the most familiar thing to him is an awe-inspiring wizard who's come back from the dead. This does a good job at showing not only Pippin's concern, but also how he has - in the midst of everything - become important to Gandalf too.

It's sweet and sad and there's a battle in the morning, but Pippin - and the reader - feel more hopeful by the end.
