08:45 am GUTTERSTARS by [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster (PG)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Simon/OC
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster
Author Website: NA
Why this must be read:

First off, I'm [livejournal.com profile] jebbypal and I'm driving the van for Firefly this month. I'm going to be doing a little bit of everything, but it will all be gen fics and mostly by authors that have somehow been woefully overlooked in the recs department.

To start things off, I'm reccing a pre-series fic by [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster. Be sure to comment if you read her stuff because so far I've been losing the battle to get her muse back into Firefly writing. Darn that Supernatural fandom and those angsty boys.

Gutterstars is probably one of the very first fics by poisontaster that I read and it exemplifies everything that makes me so happy that we've won the fight to get her to come out of the closet into fandom. The writing is tight, the words are music, and she always manages to find a unique take on characters that adds dimensions to canon ones and brings her OCs to life. Gutterstars is a gritty look at what Simon may have gone through to get information about River and find a way to get her back. As poisontaster says in her author notes: I was crippled by the image of Simon waking up in a gutter all bloody and calling River's name. Her intro chapter will cripple you as well and force you to read the entire story.

11:20 am My Ride's Here by Thea (G)
Hello, *waves* I'm [livejournal.com profile] kazbaby and I seem to have found the keys to the van and will be your driver for Farscape reccs this month. *g* I'm going to try and do a variety, but most will probably deal with my favorite pair of antagonists: John Crichton and Scorpius. Though for my first one, I'm offering up one of my favorite stories that I'm actually surprised hasn't been recced already.

This is my first time behind the wheel, so if you see something out of whack, feel free to let me know.

Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thassalia
Author Website: More of her fic can be found here
Why this must be read:

Thea takes what little information we know of D'Argo's background and applies it with the character growth we witnessed on the screen and creates a wonderful tribute to the friend, warrior, and companion we all came to know and love.

He's been ready for this moment since he was 14 cycles, since he took on the marks of a General, since he married a Sebacean woman, since he fathered a child, since he found himself chained to a cell. The thing is, despite all the readiness, he never thought he'd be, well, ready.

Spoilers for the entire series, especially Peacekeeper Wars.

12:49 pm A Different Fix by P.R. Zed (G)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] przed
Author Website: http://przed.com/

Why this must be read:
P.R.Zed does vids and does them wonderfully well, but she's an accomplished writer, too. And if you loved "The Fix," you'll want to read her slash AU version of the episode: what if Starsky & Hutch weren't partners or even friends when Hutch was forcibly addicted to heroin? Who'd be there to pick up the pieces? If you know S&H you probably already know the answer, but here's a wonderful alternate story of how they got through it. Because at least for these guys, there *is* such a thing as destiny.

05:00 pm Simple, Straight-Up, Disco-House Sugar by jocondite (R)
This month I'm driving the van for my first great fanfiction love, Orlijah.

Fandom: LOTRIPS
Pairing: Elijah Wood/Orlando Bloom
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jocondite
Author Website: Memories
Why this must be read: Some days, there's just nothing more classic than a riff on the undercover-in-a-gay-bar cliche. This version by [livejournal.com profile] jocondite is (as the title says) simple, sweet and satisfying. Yum.

05:02 pm The Secret Language of Cats by Thistlerose (PG)
Hi, I'm Penknife, and I'll be driving the Harry Potter van this month. I'm a great fan of Remus Lupin, so there'll be quite a few Remus-centric recs, as well as a few stories focusing on the other characters. Here's one to start us off:

Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] thistlefics
Why this must be read:

In this lovely gen story, Remus Lupin meets his Muggle great-grandmother and learns about family history, and how much that history matters. It's a good example of a story that explores the family background of a character whose family we never see in canon, and the original characters are beautifully drawn.

06:23 pm Andromeda overview

The Show

Andromeda was a scifi series that aired for three years in syndication, before being picked up by the SciFi Channel for its last two seasons. It centers around the adventures of the crew of the Andromeda Ascendet as they travel the universe, doing their best to create peace and not get killed. Andromeda is scifi tv at its best and worst, often both at the same time.

06:26 pm Shock the Monkey by Kassandra (NC-17)
Hi guys, I'm driving the X-files bus for the month - hopefully I'll get to give you a good variety of fics, since there's so much classic X-files fiction out there just waiting to be rec'ced.

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Krycek
Author on LJ: Not on LJ
Author Website: Kassandra's Other Page (Only available via the Wayback Machine)
Why this must be read:

Kassandra really gets Krycek, and writes him from a perspective that is wholly human without conveniently forgetting the history of the character. It's an enthralling story without being flashy, and draws you in through the sheer nature of the characters. Mulder is wonderfully written here, and all the other characters aren't forgotten (which happens with a lot of Mulder/Krycek fics) or written OOC. Just a long, subtle, at times angsty but ultimately enjoyable read.

Excerpt: Get him to trust you, they told me, and even now I have to wonder what the fuck they were smoking besides Morleys. You and your sane paranoia, you never did trust me, you never trusted anyone but Scully.

06:35 pm Five by Topaz (PG)
Hello, my name is [livejournal.com profile] vampirespider and I'll be driving your popslash crack van this month.

I have a definite JC/Lance preference, so expect a lot of them, particularly since they're incredibly under-represented on the crack van, and that's just wrong. Ah, I remember the glory days.

Anyway, I thought I'd start out with one of my favourite fics ever.

Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: JC/Lance, but not central to the story
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] t_fic
Author Website: Just for Fun
Why this must be read:
Five is wonderful, because more than anything it's about the family feel of 'NSync, which I'll admit is a weakness of mine. The story is told from Justin's point of veiw and follows the group when JC decides to have hole up the guys in a house until they have a new album. It has excellent characterization of the boys, their inter-group relationships, and it takes a realistic look at how these relationships affect the group. Also it has the most sympathetic Justin in a long time, and is not a story where the pairing erases the rest of the group.

Excerpt:
Days Two, Three and Four go pretty much the same way as Day One, except Justin wakes up on Day Two feeling a little bad that he'd slept on JC, and makes an effort to crash more on Joey. He also becomes Joey's assistant in the kitchen because Joey says Lance doesn't understand the fine art of manly cooking which Lance translates as "I don't do grease." Joey yells "oh, kitchen boy" whenever he starts throwing together something to keep them from starving, which Justin hates, but other than that, he doesn't mind hanging out with Joey.

In between making pancakes for breakfast or making a run to the tiny cinderblock barbecue shack to pick up lunch, Justin gets the gossip on every single person they know in California and Florida, plus daily updates on Bri and the wedding plans and the latest additions to the water park Joey calls a backyard. Naturally enough, Joey has a bazillion off-color comments about the tabloids' version of Justin's life, but Justin thinks that he'd hate it if Joey weren't needling him about his sex life.

He also gets the scoop on JC and Lance which turns out to be not much information at all, just that it's very new and that everybody's playing it cool, not making any waves about it. While he and Chris are waking up over Joey's really lousy coffee, Justin asks careful questions but it takes three mornings before Chris admits that he doesn't know whether to be happy for them or not.

08:09 pm Spirit Warriors of Angharad by ophelia (PG)
I'm your Star Wars PT reccer this month. I have a great many interests so I'll be going for variety, mainly.

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Obi-Wan/Other
Author on LJ: little help?
Author Website: Ophelia's Star Wars Fanfic
Why this must be read:

Note: that's 'Other' as in OFC. Now, I know what you're going to say. Honestly, this fic contains a perfectly likable original female character, one I could see Obi-Wan falling for, but that's not why I rec the story. This story is mainly about the relationship between a young Anakin and Obi-Wan and to some extent, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. Ophelia gives wonderful insight into how a teenager with a greater need for affection than his mentor can give would really react when faced with a terrible mission, one where he is forced to make some impossible choices on his own. This fic is looong, which I love, because it's able to explore so much in terms of plot and characterization. And, for the record, this is one of only two stories that ever made me cry.

09:26 pm Pilgrimage by Jamelia (G)
Hi my name is Emily and I'll be your Star Trek pusher rec'er for May. I'll try to hit each of the series at least once, but there will probably be an emphasis on TOS, DS9 and anything with Vulcans. *g*

Fandom: STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE 9/STAR TREK: VOYAGER
Pairing: Tuvok/T'Pel
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Meandering with Jamelia through the Delta Quadrant
Why this must be read:

In this story, Jamelia looks at one of those left behind in the wake of Voyager's journey to the Delta Quadrent, Tuvok's wife T'Pel. T'Pel, not believing her husband is dead, goes to Deep Space 9 to examine the place where Voyager was last seen. There, she encounters Sisko who agrees to help her in her searching for...something, though even she doesn't know what it is. The story is from Sisko's POV as he interacts with T'Pel, and it's a great look at a character who was never really seen on Voyager as well as the bond between T'Pel and Tuvok. It's also got some excellent characterization of Sisko and even hints about his time spent on Saratoga.
